Hello out there!I have a problem with my fother,he is 72 years old and him stomach don’t absorb whole the threptical thinks from the foods.Know he can’t walk normaly(without balance)and a lot of times he fall down, because him muscles can’t hold him on the feets!I want ask everyone he know if he can take proteine supllements and gloutamine without problem at this age.I think they may help him muscles and nerves sysytem with a light weight program together? Thanks a lot for your reading and sorry aboyt my english!
I don’t think protein supplements would cause any problems but I would consider using a Meal Replacement Powder such as Biotest GROW! or a similar product from EAS or Met-Rx. They are easy to digest and provide more complete nutrition than just a protein powder. A light weight program sounds like a good idea, too, as long as your father doesn’t have some medical condition that would prevent it. I have seen several reports on television in the past few years that show many older adults respond well to such programs and enjoy improved mobility and flexibility as a result of them. My mother is 75. She struggles at times to get up out of her chair (though she pretends she doesn’t). I know she would benefit from a similiar weight program. I just can’t figure out how to convince her.
The MRP’s would digest easily, but I gather your Father has absorbtion problems in his stomach? If this is the case, the problem is more accurately in his intestines. That’s where protein is digested. So, protein powders would cause a lot of discomfort, gas and diarreah. Glutamine will help with intestinal health so that’s a good idea. Still it’s hard to say without knowing the problem. Age isn’t the problem.
BTW, don’t worry about your english. Just hope this helps.
As far as training goes, try dyna bands. Elastics that provide resistance. He can work his legs from a chair at first, then do squats and so on. They’re great for rehab.
My old man had a stroke and lost the use of his left arm and leg, as well as any inclination to eat properly or exercise (not that he ever did, but that’s another story)…
I recently had the ‘pleasure’ of caring for him for 10 days, and every day I made him drink a Whey Protein concoction (he loved it) and I also mixed olive oil and flax oil into every one of his meals. This included olive oil on his toast etc. He actually put on a few pounds under my care, so I say “Go for it”…it doesnt sound like your old mans quality of life is too good, so any little thing should help.Go the Thera-bands too.
Here’s an excerpt from a “Reuter’s Health” article that came in just this morning. The original study was published in “Annals of Behavioral Medicine, August 2001”. Sounds like we may have yet another reason to get our aging parents involved with exercise.
"Regular exercise may give an emotional boost to frail elderly adults without causing them physical pain, new study results suggest. The findings add to evidence that activity can bring benefits beyond physical well-being. [...]
Schechtman’s team looked at more than 1,700 elderly adults who took part in exercise interventions at four sites in the US. All were frail and considered at risk for fall-related injuries. The researchers focused on how the activities, which included endurance, resistance, flexibility and balance training, affected participants’ quality of life.
The investigators found that, overall, participants reported improved emotional health following the exercise intervention. The scale used to measure emotional health did not specifically gauge psychological problems like depression, but can serve as an indicator of such conditions, the researcher pointed out."
