Protein

Hay, i’m and Australian and was talking to a American that i just met at my, we got talking about our nutrition and somthing we both had in comon was we eat alot of buffalo and ostrich, like Davies and Poliquin have talked about. well, when i told him that i also ate alot of kangaroo, he freeked out completely. its really really lean and tastes good. but does this seem gross to you guys??? he said he couldnt picture anyone at home ever doing it.???.

Its all culture related. Koreans and Indonesians love dog meat. The Chinese love snakes and scorpians. The French and Japanese love horse meat. I’ve eaten it all in my travels. Was it good? Yes. Did I enjoy it? No. Would I eat it here in the USA? No. Would I eat it overseas again? Yes. Eat what you want and don’t worry about what outsiders say. Just don’t eat MY dogs or horses. You Aussies do eat one thing that is truly gross though. I think it was called VitaMite. It is a spread for toast in the morning. I would take a raw, just-born Joey over that shit anyday!

Not at all gross. If you think about it, the leanest cuts of meat usually come from animals that are very mobile/active whereas the fattier cuts come from sedentary animals (i.e. venicin vs. cows or pigs).

Unfortunately in this country, most people havn’t had the luxury of being exposed to different sources of meat. I agree - “Roo” is great tasting. In faith, Coach Davies

Yes, I agree that it is cultural. I have to say though, when someone brought back kangaroo jerky back from Australia, I could not eat it. It had a gamey smell that I was not used to. But then again, I can’t eat lamb for the same reason. Lamb or mutton smells like, not to offend people who like it, urine. I pride myself on being able to eat just about anything, including live shrimp, pig ear, beef intestines, but that urine-like smell of mutton kept from liking it no matter how hard I tried to eat it. As for the Australian spread, I think you mean Vegemite, as in that Men at Work song, Land Downunder…“she gave me a Vegemite sandwich…”

Alternative meat sources to beef are nothing new as well as buffalo (beefalo with cross breeding), ostrich/emu and even llama.

I tried a roo steak quite a few years back and thought it was pretty good. It’s a very dark red meat and went very well with a spicy plum sauce.
I rather liked it, but then again, I’m Canadian and don’t take most of my meals at Crispy Cream.

Do they have Crispy Creme’s in Canada?

i like rabbit and that is a very lean meat…its taste real good and is prolly a good source of protein…just felt like i had to share that with you guys…lol

Hay are you dissin Vegimite? big mistake. na just kidding. but i just got to tell you that its the heighest concentrated sourse of B vitamines in the world. i always thought that was cool.

An old war story I’ll share with you guys… When I was in the Marines, we were out on maneuvers with the Aussies in the outback in WA. I was in aircraft (helicopter) ordnance at the time, and when the maneuvers were finished, my crew got left out in the desert by mistake. Since flight ops had shut down, the decision was made to let us stay out overnight. (Gotta love that colonel…) Well, we got hungry and there wasn’t anything much to eat except…roos here and there on the horizon. So we took a .50 cal, set it up and waited. Sure enough, pretty soon one hopped into view and we blew the thing completely to pieces from about 1000 yards away. Then we opened a couple of rounds and used the gunpowder to make a fire and voila! Roo steaks. The taste wasn’t bad, but I have to say that killing that kangaroo was one of the most disgusting things that I’ve ever seen. I am SO glad that I can be a carnivore “at one remove” in our society, and if that makes me a wuss, so be it.

I read that Australia is the ONLY country in the world where it is common place to eat a National Emblom!
Doesnt meen anything but interesting

'Roo meat, eh? I’ll eat anything. I’m from Maine; I’ll trade you some lobster for it. Just kidding. Good post.

We in Canada eat beaver all the time

HA!!! Oh my god!!! Americans believe everything they hear about Australia. NOBODY eats kangaroo here! If you go the outback which is in the MIDDLE of Australia, you’ll surely be treated like a dumbass tourist and the yobbos will try and shovel kangaroo shit down your throats. We have huge ass cities here! We CANT even buy kangaroo meat here!!! I’d chuck if i saw kangaroo pieces in the shops! I’ve only ever seen a kangaroo in the zoo, and by the way, i LUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUURVE that VEGIMITE!!!

Gotta love skippy the bush kangaroo. Tastes great dont it, but trust aussies to have a pest as their national emblem. Wouldnt see us NZ’rs eating kiwi’s now would ya.

Crispy Cream is not yet in Western Canada, but I have seen on the news that they may be coming here. Kind of a shame that Canada will not be far behind the States in an over obese population.
Ausie! Timmy is right about Canada eating their National Emblom. My diet is extremely high in beaver.

  1. No cloven feet. 2) Doesn’t chew the cud. No thanks.

Not because I consider it a matter of religious law, it’s just that that delineation seem to sum it up for me. I don’t want to eat cats, dogs, rats, any carnivore, possums, kangaroos, monkeys, etc., thanks. However, I can see where if everyone around you eats kangaroos, you’d see nothing wrong with it
and I suppose morally or health-wise there is no difference.

But killing Kanga, let alone Roo? Then eating them? Doesn’t seem right. It seems better for a food animal to be a stupid one, like a cow.

Lol @ Bill Roberts. I can’t say I’d eat much other that the normal everyday U.S. meats.

But what about coming up with a Hydrolyzed Kangaroo MRP? Or some Advanced Snake and Scorpion?

I got it! Jackal N’ Rhino. The jackal is the fast acting protein, absorbs immediately for post- workout, and the slow acting rhino, for the overnight fast. Who knows, maybe thats the “Nitrovarin” secret protein.

My…My…My.
Humans can eat just about anything, including each other to survive. However, you can die of mal-nutrition on rabbit. Just remember the poplar bears motto!!!
“If you are smaller than me, you are dinner”

A few facts-kangaroo is a truly free range, organic meat.It is very low in fat, high in protein, iron and zinc.If cooked without any kind of marinade,it has that strong ‘gamey’ smell and taste. This is easily overcome with even the simplest of marinades. All sqeamish talk of eating ‘cute little furry animals’(they are actually not that small!)and ‘eating national symbols’ aside,it actually tastes quite nice when cooked.
I have not been to every state in Australia, but kangaroo is available in just about any South Australian supermarket,in Victoria it is available at outlets like the Victoria Markets.
The kangaroo meat trade is a natural extension of the Australian government’s culling program.Basically, there are too many kangaroos in many areas, they strip such areas of the natural vegetation. While moronic environmentalists loudly protest this,it is necessary to cull a relatively small proportion of the kangaroo population to sustainable levels to protect both the vegetation and the kangaroo population itself.
