Professor X: A Request

thanks its good to know, I’ll look out for that kind of thing when I readin in future.

Pro X, I read that u had talked to lots of people, but I didn’t realise that you meant with real pro’s, I mean every gym has beefy guys but not many have people of that standard around.

Also I dont know if u realise but what ur suggesting is actually what a lot of people are trying to use this forum for, to ask experienced guys (like yourself) questions, which may be stupid but if they never asked them, then they’d never know

I might invest in some DVDs, do u have any ud recommend?

Old School:
Shawn Ray
Kevin Levrone
(both of these guys are very informative, especially Shawn)

Newer:
Ronnie Coleman
Dexter Jackson (Titans vid)
Vic Martinez (Titans vid)

I would actually like to find one from Johnnie Jackson but I haven’t run across any yet.

Mind you, none of those guys use the same weight for every single set so I am not sure where this current trend to do that came from. It damn sure didn’t come from the guys with really big muscles.

Thanks.

I’ll get that one next.

The Titans vids are pretty decent too even though most are done right before a contest so they obviously won’t be going over the top with the weights used.

I’ve got a lot of catching up to do with this thread, but I had a question for the Professor:

Do you do DB Laterals? If so, can you describe your form on them? [/quote]

I used to. Doing them aggravated my brachioradialis muscle. I just worked through it for several years…until I found one of those side lateral machines where the pad rests on your forearm. I can add plates to the whole stack on the machine and as a result actually noticed even more growth than I did with dumbbells simply because I could go heavier with no pain.

As far as my form when I did dumbbells, I kept my arm slightly bent and came up to parallel. I also always did them seated.

My routine lately is :
Overhead presses
High incline presses (for front delts)
Side laterals
Shrugs
Reverse pec deck

Sometimes I only do shrugs or only do reverse pec deck as the last movement considering my time in the morning is often limited and doing all of those takes me at least an hour…plus I think my traps can handle a day off considering they grow like they do.

Thanks man, I’ve been contemplating switching over to the lateral raise machine myself. I recently started doing the reverse pec deck for rear delts and I was amazed at how much more I felt them as opposed to the DB variation.

What’s your opinion on behind the neck pressing?

I did it for years but only went down as far as my ears. Nearly everyone I know who would go down all of the way to the traps ended up having shoulder problems.

Still gotta finish reading the thread but had a question.

Prof, how do you feel about the Labrada RTD mixes? I am in the market for some pre-mixed meal replacement/protein shakes and came across here that you take them. Which one do you take exactly? There are a few out there ( I think there is a carb watcher and lean body?) Would you recommend these drinks? If so, which ones and what flavor?

I know it is always better to have real food but my schedule is very hectic at work. Thanks and this is a great thread.

This thread wins. I read the first page which is almost 4 years old. Before we lost Rainjack in Ragnarok.

Your exercise selection looks almost the same as the one from the routine CC gave me. I guess great minds do think alike after all.

Yeah I saw him posting over at IM, telling some T-Nation punk to go to hell

Second question Prof: What are your thoughts on stripped down hypertrophy by JM as written here Strength Training, Bodybuilding & Online Supplement Store - T NATION?

I hope so…I hope so.

SO would you continue using a movement so long as your performance form the last workout was at least matched. eg. same reps and weight.

Also have you ever had a time where you performance on an exercise started to decrease from workout to workout and what did you do then, if that happened?

Thank You

No offense but I don’t even read most of the training articles on this site. Most of the info some of you think is brand new is just rehashed material from the last 30 years redressed so some personal trainer can attach their name to it. I honestly don’t intend to go through these routines picking them apart or trying to break down the logic behind them. I consider that a waste of time because it holds no interest for me.

A routine that I do plan to check into might include Doggcrap, simply because it is NOT aimed at beginners and the assumption is that you already know how to train balls to the wall (as well as having already made more progress than most) before you ever start it. That alone is the key to any routine producing results, not the brand name.

This is biology. There WILL be days that you will not outperform where you were last week and may even do worse and it doesn’t mean anything needs to be changed. Your body is a very complex system of chemical reactions. To try to pin point one variable as the reason for some finding that simply includes “one less rep than last week” will cause more cortisol production to worry about it than it will to make sure you get enough sleep in the following week, eat enough to support a gain in the first place, and try again with renewed focus.

If there was actually a TREND of decreased strength that would point to a problem with my diet and rest more than some specific exercise. Unless there is some disease process going on, there is little explanation for why someone would be constantly losing strength unless they were not eating/resting enough.

No, I have NEVER noticed some long term trend of decreased strength outside of my military training where I lost over 30lbs before it and then lost even more strength during the process. Obviously the reason for the drop in strength was NOT the exercise.

Thanks for your answer. Its great getting information from guys bigger than me.

I suppose my only other question is how has your volume (number of exercises) change since you started training.

I know you’ve added exercises to bring up bodyparts and you split your chest.

But has there been an overaall trend in volume over your lifting career or has it remained pretty constant.

Thank You

CF

Overall volume has increased minimally, especially for biceps. I did chest alone this morning and did three heavy exercises and one “burn out” with the pec deck. Years back I would have only done two heavy exercises and one “burn out” exercise.

I still pick 3-4 exercises for most body parts though. I also do more warm up sets now (especially for biceps).

X, you started dieting yet?
