About choosing something you’re passionate about for a career…

The only two things I’m really passionate about in this world are music and women. I’m a decent guitar player and vocalist, and I think I could be pretty fucking good at it if I devoted myself and tried to reach a professional level. However, I choose to pursue a career in something that I have little passion for, simply for the money and free time it will give me. I don’t want to be chasing the dream all my life, because the chance of me making serious money off of it is so slim, regardless of how skilled I become.

Some may say that is a sad way to look at it, but I disagree. I’ll keep music as a hobby regardless of what I do to put food on the table.

How is that sad? It is realistic. I am a little tired of the whole “get a job you LOVE and don’t worry about the money” bullshit that gets spewed to every college kid. Look, I LOVE sleeping, eating, fucking and lifting. Unfortunately, short of prostitution, none of those really make any money. People who not only procrastinate but go through life thinking they actually DESERVE to have some type of dream job that pays well that they LOOOOVE…are fucking idiots. I like my job. It is challenging, however, to think you should have a career that you would love doing for free is pretty ridiculous.

Sacrifices are a part of life and I get the feeling a lot of these guys are going to be surprised at how much they wish they could improve their standard of living after they fuck off all four- five years of college.

Love don’t pay the bills and to my knowledge, money issues are still the number one reason for failed marriages.

I agree on all counts. I like my job, but I like my free time better. I also think that turning what you love into your job can easily kill that joy for you.

Would I like video games as much as I do if I was working as a video game developer? I don’t really think so.

x 3 on this. There are too many starving artists in the world to believe that following what you’re passionate about will result in the money aspect of life taking care of itself.

Bushy - PM sent.

Sorry BBB I didnt get one.

I read a quote once - it might’ve been here - that read “you are the habits you’ve adopted” or something like that. You hear all kinds of silly #'s being tossed around about breaking or forming new habits, like “It takes 1,000 times of doing something for it to be a habit” , yadayadayada…Bullshit.

The most imprtant number in that equation is 1, in that you gotta get off your ass and make that 1st sep. Then the most important step changes to the one that follows, and so on. No one or anything is gonna snap you out of your funk, and waiting or looking for someone/something to do it is really ironic.

You don’t need pills, or a book or even a knock to the fucking head, you just need to pull your head outta your ass and do it. This isn’t Groundhog day and none of us are Bill Murray. We only get this once and bullshitting through it should be a fucking crime. Don’t settle for where you are or what you have, and don’t feel sorry for yourself or think “I’ll do it tomorrow” 'cause you won’t. Trust me.

OP you sound like a lazy smart guy. I know a few like you. They never put much effort into anything, and now having accomplished only the bare minimum throughout out their lives, they are approaching 40 without a pot to piss in.

I have never been a 4.0 student, but hard work pays off. For me, being told by a professor that I was math illiterate pissed me off and made me prove that fucker wrong. Now, I have two finance degrees, and am the second most successful guy in the old college gang.

It’s a lot easier to be a poor 20 year old than is to be a poor 70 year old.

That’s a very appropriate choice of avatar you made there. lol

when you think of doing something, just do it then. if i plan on doing something, it becomes this big, ominous task i have to do and i will procrastinate doing it, for sure, every time. so don’t plan things, so just things whenever doing them pops into your head. things become much less threatening because they don’t hang over your head.

yes, the ideal thing would be to be organized and plan out working on assignments, blah, blah, blah, but that has always, except for a few rare occasions when i got super motivated, just made me less likely to do an assignment/chore.

and just to clarify, this isn’t the 'ole “just do it” advice. it is to do things spontaneously and not worry about deadlines, planning your activities, results, etc.

What a fantastic piece of advice from the class of 09. sigh. So many good posts above, and then this.

One of my professor’s in college always said “Tomorrow comes with it’s own demands.”

Tomorrow is the busiest day of the week…

Yall seem like normal people who are able to organize their lives, so perhaps you don’t understand that doing so just isn’t possible for some people, and that those people are better off finding other ways to get things done. Well, really, all I can offer is my own experience, but I know that I have to psyche myself out into thinking that I’m not actually doing something related to responsibility in order to be able to work on a task. I accomplish this by working spontaneously. It’s working a lot better than when I tried to organize everything and plan times and ways to work on jobs/things I needed to get done. Sounds pretty pathetic I know, but it’s a step in the right direction for an EXTREME procrastinator/avoider of responsibility.

That quote speaks to me on so many levels. Thanks for posting that. Hey Wol, where did you find that animated thing you posted on the first page, and how do I make that my av? '05 for the win!

I didn’t get one bushy. Sorry.

EDIT: No PM, but I got an email. Thanks!

I’ve just started using Microsoft outlook as my calendar to get me to do things. since it’s on my computer I can’t ignore it. Also turning off my wireless gets work down.
