Prime Time: Sprained Wrist Help

Hey guys,

I recently sprained my wrist pretty badly. Its in a cast. Any exercises or tips that would help me maintain strength in my casted arm until it comes off?

Thanks,
Poper

Yes, and it’s probably the last one of which you’d think!

Train the uninjured arm; you’ll get some CNS-related strength carryover to the injured side. Also, make sure that you’re mobilizing that sucker as soon as the doctors let you.

If you can get someone to help you out with some manual resistance exercises, you can definitely maintain most, if not all of that strength. Various presses, curls, and extensions are good bets.

Good luck!

Thanks Eric,

Your good news makes this frustrating ordeal much easier to take.

Thanks

Eric’s suggestion on traning the uninjured side is a good one.

In addition, you can also try to isometrically contract the wrist/forearm muscles on the injured side as long as it doesn’t significantly increase your pain.

Definitely work the wrist ROM as soon as you can.

Depending on how you injured the wrist, i.e vector of force and what tissues were injured, make sure to slowly build up the resistance in that movement pattern in order to avoid re-injury.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Take care,

Ryan
