Prime Time: Ask Me Stuff

I’m seeing a lot of activity on the forums concerning Dr. Di Pasquale’s “Anabolic Solution for Bodybuilder’s Diet” or AS diet, and am thinking about transitioning over to it from JB’s “Massive Eating.”

I was wondering if you or any other contributor ever followed up with more from your initial “Eat Like a Man - Part I” article. I tried a search and only came up with Part I. Thanks!

If you mean the old Anabolic Diet, here’s Part II:

It’s a dated diet. There are better choices these days.

What ever happened with the talks of a print edition of T-Mag?

I was wondering what the would be the best training program would be to follow up HIT training. I’ve been doing HIT style training for about two months now and my lifts have hit a slight plateau, plus I’m getting a little bored. My results from that style of training have been great mostly due to the fact that I have been doing high volume work for about a year. (Don’t worry, I’ve been hanging out on this site a lot and feel enlightened now).

My goal is to increase my mass consistently until around december, then start to diet for the NPC Iowa contest in April. I did that show this year and placed first in the teen division but believe I have tons of room to grow if I can just shake off my abs and keep the workouts fresh.

I check out the Waterbury program but think that might be way to much volume right after HIT training especially with 8 of the 22 sets being supersets. Is this concern logical and if so, where would be a good place to go from here?

Also, in response to the Anabolic Solution question, I’m currently doing that diet right now, with a slight variation. I keep my carbs at about 100 a day, all after training, and only eat like crap on Saturdays. I have gained about 8 pounds in eight weeks and am very pleased with the results. It is very easy to increase calories through the use of oils and other good fats, and all you need is an oven and a Foreman.

My gains have been great but keep in mind that I just got done competing so I have plenty of room to grow anyway, and have stuck to a very high carb/low fat diet for about the last year prior to my competition training. I’d suggest giving it a try. The best part is eating like complete crap on the weekends and coming away unscathed. Every week I think I overdid it but the water that gets held as a biproduct of eating so many carbs and sodium in one day comes of over the next few days. Let me know how it goes.

ah that’s nice. please put some more pics in there. laters pk

How many total milligrams of fat a day on the Velocity Diet? As so many Salmon caps come in different gram amounts.
thanks

When doing chins/pullups I am stronger when using a pronated grip, yet the supinated grip is supposed to be easier.

Does this suggest I have a weakness somewhere that is causing my supinated chins to be weaker?

Not sure which Waterbury program you mean, but any of his would be fine. Don’t worry, most of his programs aren’t “high volume.” While some of them may have a lot of sets, you’ll notice that the reps are low – 8 x 3 for example. He smartly manipulates his programs to avoid common overtraining pitfalls.

Maybe take a week to ease into a higher volume program, but I think the general rules still apply here: after you stagnate on one type of training, do the opposite. If you’ve been training full body three times per week, you may want to try a 4 or 5 day split for a few weeks. If you’ve been training to failure, leave 1-2 reps in the hole for a few weeks. If you’ve been doing 3 x 10, swap to 10 x 3.

A good Thibaudeau program would work too. Can’t go wrong with Waterbury or Thib. You may even want to look into Staley’s EDT. Choose whatever is most different than what you have been doing. Good luck!

What width are you using? Pronated (palms facing away from you) typically hits the forearms more and places less stress on the wrists. There’s also not as much biceps being used. Supinated (palms facing you) activates the biceps more.

So, maybe you’re biceps are weak relative to other muscle groups? But it could also mean your brachialis and brachio-radialis muscles are very stong if you’re talking about a narrow (hands six inches or so apart), pronated grip. Thinking out loud: I wonder how arm length affects all this? A short-armed person might be better at pronated pull-ups. Hmmmm.

Assuming weakness and not some other issue, I’d suggest to focus most of your chin-up/pull-up work on your weakest position.

It varies. On some days I took fish oil caps and others I didn’t (mainly so the calories would balance out like I wanted them.) But on salmon oil days, I took 21 capsules per day at 1200mg per capsule. That was average.

Truthfully, I switched brands just about every time I bought fish oil. No need to sweat the details. But remember, I also used a lot of milled flax every day.

Is it true that at Boot Camp this year you will be hosting jello shot parties in your hotel room, as well as modeling the latest line of swimwear by Speedo? Just something I heard-Jules

Thanks for the thoughts. I actually have pretty long arms, and normally use a slightly wider than shoulder-width grip for pronated chins.

I guess I should just focus on supinated grip for a while and see if that makes any difference.

Chris,

What are your thoughts on trap bar.
Any chance it can be a part of gear reviews?

Thanks,

Trap bars are fairly ho-hum for a review, meaning that there’s just not anything “new” when it comes to trap bars. But yeah, if I could find one with some unique twist, I’d like to review one.

I like trap bars. Truthfully, a trap bar deadlift is more “pure” than a barbell deadlift, meaning that it just fits the body better than a bar. My favorite trap bar deadlift variation is to stand on a box. In other words, the box is inside the trap bar with you, making you have to get low. This is helpful for me at least for leg work because I tend to back-lift a barbell deadlift too much.

One note of caution, I don’t like the idea of a competitive powerlifter using a trap bar – or at least not overusing it. I knew a coach once who had his high school athletes train almost exclusively on the trap bar for the deadlift. Kids had no “feel” for the movement they had to use in competition. Other than that, I like trap bars.

Chris,

I know that I should incorporate more EFAs into my diet. Could you recommend a brand of fish oil capsules and how and when they should be taken?

Hi Chris. I asked Cy a little while ago what androgen class the oral-turinobol product would be and he wasn’t sure. Any idea yourself? Also, I thought I saw Bill Roberts post here not too long ago, then disappear again, know where I could reach him or maybe you could ask of him yourself? Thanks.

Truthfully, I buy a different brand almost every time I buy fish oil caps. Currently I’m using Rexall 1200mg. I think the only time I got some “bad” fish was when I bought a big bottle on sale at a mall supplement store. Tip: Don’t buy fish oil on the discount table!

With certain diet plans like the Velocity Diet, I took 21 capsules about every other day. But with a normal diet, 3 to 6 capsules daily is fine to get you started. This is based on some of Dr. Lowery’s recent articles. I’m taking 5 per day right now, usually split into two servings with meals, but that’s not a huge factor with the smaller dosages.

You may burp fish oil when you first start taking them but for whatever reason, this goes away after a while. Taking your caps during a meal and not after seems to help too.

I consider fish oil a staple supplement. Everyone should be taking a few caps a day at least. I actually place fish oil in a more important position than a multivitamin. If you can only afford one, go for the Omega-3’s over the multi.

Sleeplessness is pretty common on a cycle. I experience it even with 4-AD-EC. Nothing works better for me than a combination of ZMA and melatonin (3mg.)

Avoid most other sleep drugs (over the counter and script) because most of them tend to put you to sleep but not allow REM sleep, so you wake up unrested and zonked.

Sorry, I’m not the best person to answer the other Q’s.

As long as Speedo makes a zebra skin “pouch” or something equally classy, I’m in.
