I notice that sometimes. Like that fight with Don Frye in the link above. You know he is better than that. It looked like a hockey fight. I guess brain damage is not that big of a deal to him.

Sakuraba after fight with Arona.

Is it just me or do quite of the fighters in the clips shown have little to no (Thai) boxing skills? They seem to just brawl and tough it out…

Of course, some of them do exhibit skills such as Crocop.

Just my observation (and before anyone gets ticked off, offended, and start shouting “yeah well I bet you wouldn’t stand a chance bluh bluh bluh” let me just say, “that’s beside the point.”)[/quote]

That’s because MMA is a diffrent animal then pure standup fighting. You have to adjust your stances and your techiques because you have to guard against take downs (upper and lower body)and submissions. That’s why alot of K-1 guys, boxers and traditional martial arts guys struggle in MMA. They aren’t prepared to fight at all ranges of fighting. You have to have a complete skill set.

But that’s what I am saying a complete “skill set”, they seem to be lacking in the standup (Thai) boxing skill set in favor of being able to withstand punches…

I also thought the "skill so to speak didn’t look very impressive. As I watched it over and over though, nuances became apparent. It seems that almost all of the fighters respect eachothers ability to deal out damage, so while the look for openings the don’t always go balls out. When the do sense an opening, they generally attack like a wolverine on crack. when they do this, the other guy basically tries to survive this, and when the other guy gets out of balance from over doing the offense the guy defending will counterattack. I think the mindset is to win as quickly as possible. I don’t think anyone wants to get in a long drawn out bout with the likes of a cro cop. You can block his kicks all day and eventually he will probably break your arm or leg or cause you to quit from sheer pain.

It looks like the strategy is basically, dish out major damage as fast as possible, while minimally focusing on defense, mainly avoiding and huge blows, but just absorbing glancing blows and such. This might be why it looks like a brawl. I’m thinking if they fought a less skilled fighter, it would look like a clinic, whith them avoiding 100% of the attacks and landing nearly 100% of thier shots. (probably only a couple to finish the fight anyways)

I was bored last night so I ordered UFC 53. Andre Arlofsky is a god damn animal! Sure the kid he was fighting wasn’t the toughest opponent, but still the way he moved in the ring for a big 240 pound guy was impressive. It also looks like he is really focused and aggressive. It would be great to see him fight someone in pride.

Rich franklin was also highly impressive. He took basically one shot the whole fight, and it was a bomb from tanner. He managed to cover and rest while tanner tried to finish him. He then came back out and schooled tanner on how to strike. It seems his agility is his best asset as he was able to bounce in and out quickly and deliver several blows in that time.

The other kid that really was impressive was this big black kid from canada, his nickname was the crow, but I can’t remember his name. He dropped this other kid with a spinning back kick to the ribs, it was a pretty sight. This was after he succesfully defended agains a rear naked choke. Also when this guy was even in full guard, he was dropping elbows right through the other guys hands like they werent even there. He had amazing power from that close range.

someone asked about how fedor emelianenko trains, in an interview he gave on his website he states that he doesnt train with barbells or dumbells and even thinks they are detrimental to MMA training (controversial but he is the best, his brothers not bad either and their team mate sergei kharatodov is good too). In training videos and pictures plus articles he states he does running and circuit training (he calls it circular training) with kettlebells, sleds, sledgehammers, sandbags, bungee ropes etc and bodyweight drills like pull ups and dips. He believes strength should be built through grappling with the weight of a training partner. I got a picture of him doing this bungee cord training, some kind of shock training where a bungee cord is stretched out from a tree and he pulls it as hard as he can across his body with one hand and lets go, i think judo guys do it and fedor is a national judo and sambo champion (makes sense). he also does tonnes of grappling and boxing plus he trained with jerome le banner (the k-1 guy getting pasted by bob sapp in that photo) in kickboxing though fedor is mainly a ground and pounder.

I agree with everything you’ve said except that Kharatodov is still with Russian Top Team, not Fedors Red Devil Fight Club.
