Powerlifter Vs. Bodybuilder 2 - The Rematch
tsantos wrote:
OP, most of these lifts are in the realm of powerlifting. That’s not a bad thing but do you want to beat him and have him lined up with the excuses about the lifts being in your favour?

I don’t thnk so, you want to beat him on his turf, at his game. I recommend adding some tri kick backs and hip abduction movements into this one.
I was thinking about adding bicep curls on a yoga ball. He does that one a lot.

The question I really want to know is how do you know if someone is stronger than you? How do you test it? People are always saying I am stronger than so and so. How do you prove it?

Your choice doesn’t make any sense. I think I will stick with my choice.
I at least thought mine was catchier.

Just in my opinion your posts always come across as really insecure, like you have to prove you’re stronger than this guy in order to prove yourself to him, or the kids you teach, or something. Maybe I’m misinterpreting things, but it just seems like an odd place to get your motivation from.

Do you always squat to that (high) box?
When I do box squats I use it. What do you think of it?
I think that unless you’re competing in the box squat there’s probably not a point in using it. A high box is usually not representative of your true PL-legal raw squat. I know I’ve been able to get 100+lbs over my true max from squatting to a box that places me at similar depth to yours, and that’s without even training for it.

You can’t make an absolute statement, you can only make calls around a specific context.

That said, if I can lift 4/5/6 it’s a pretty sure bet I’m stronger than the kid doing 2/3/4

Pretty much, why are you trying to outlift a bodybuilder? Being strong isn’t even his main goal, if it’s even a contest you’ve lost.
I am trying to outlift a bodybuilder because he thinks that he is stronger than me and I said “ok lets see”. Last year he beat me by 5 pounds.
My point is still there. If he really trains for bodybuilding and dabbles in strength training on the side and even has a modicum of a chance against you when you’re powerlifting training full time you’ve lost. If you run his numbers through a 1rm calculator (not very accurate I know) he’s totalling 1055 at 240. That’s less than a 285 wilks. If it’s anything short of an embarrassment for him he won. Sorry if I sound like a dick here but c’mon man

They’re just having a bit of fun (I hope). It isn’t the Olympics here. We’re not exactly debating whether Michael Johnson should get close to Maurice Greene in a 100m sprint.

His choice makes a lot more sense than yours…

And I absolutely agree with Pwnisher about your use of the terms powerlifter and bodybuilder. Especially bodybuilder. I remember your first thread, and your description of this guy does not remotely resemble what he ACTUALLY looks like. You made him out to be a fucking monster. A monster he is not. I’ve never seen a guy call himself a bodybuilder who looks like that.

For anyone who missed the first thread… The ‘big guy’ in the video was described by the OP as being “240 lbs, 10% bodyfat, whiskey barrel chest, bodybuilder”. I watched the entire video twice, and did not see any bodies that came close to this description. I did see a guy who was probably 240 lbs, 20-25% bodyfat, who you could probably guess lifts weights if you saw him in person, but you wouldn’t really be sure.

I also saw an insecure twat who thinks that his yells when he bench presses about 1.1x his bodyweight are beyond his control and simply part of his shitty personality.

I’ve got one more thing to point out. Your current bench press max is 250. Last November your max was 235, and you’ve indicated that you’ve been training specifically for powerlifting since that time. That’s awful. Either your diet sucks, your training sucks, or both.

You’ve suggested that this is important to you, but I have to question your effort based on what I’m seeing here.

I use to coach against this guy when I was at the rival school. We were both basketball coaches. I rather compete against my friends than a bunch of strangers. Bragging rights for the whole year are way better than a $10 trophy. Me and this guy have gotten more kids into fitness from this competition than I can count. We are starting a after school weightlifting club for kids that arent in the athletics program and dont have weights at home. Rivallries and motivating kids is a great source of motivation. We told the principal we might lift in front of the whole school and raise money for charity. All the kids want to go.

That may be the first thing that you’ve said in either of these threads that I actually think is awesome.

Would you mind not using profanity in this post? If I met you at the gym and told you what kind of competition I was going to be in I doubt you would say any of the things you are saying. I do appreciate the feedback on the bench, good point. If flipcollar is going to call me names that he would never say to my face and use bad language I am going to move on.

LOLOLOL.

This is an open forum. I’ll say what I want, thanks. The fact that you might raise some money for your school doing this is in the only redeeming factor here, and it wasn’t until 2 posts ago that you even mentioned this possibility.

Are you seriously that offended by ‘bad language’? I thought we were all adults here. This is a lifting site, not a children’s site. There isn’t a single thing in this thread, or the other thread, that I wouldn’t say to your face. I would absolutely tell you that this challenge is garbage. I would also tell you that the guy you’re challenging is not a bodybuilder (and you’re not a powerlifter until you compete). I’d tell him that too. You’re in Texas, right? It’s suddenly dawned on me that you’re definitely in a very small town in Texas. That’s the only explanation for the strange perspective you’ve brought to your threads. The fact that you see this guy as such a hulking menace tells me that there are very few strong people around you. Is that about right?

Well my challenge isnt as exciting as the title suggests but it is fun for me, my friends the the people at my school we have told. Two guys that are not morbidly obese weight lifting challenge didnt have the same ring to it.

I definitely thought about it a little bit and it is kind of ridiculous. I was having fun and hope you thought it might be funny too. I am a teacher, my job is to make things that sound dull exciting. I was not trying to take anything away from the people on this site, powerlifter or bodybuilder that are much much more accomplished than me. Just trying to have fun.

I can appreciate that, and I did say in your first thread that your enthusiasm for lifting is positive. Just keep in mind that your job as a teacher is to make things that are dull sound exciting to your students, not us. Honestly, anything lifting-related IS exciting to us here already, lol. You don’t have to jazz it up. It also didn’t serve you well to describe your first competition as a ‘meet’. The people here have a specific definition of a meet. ‘Informal meet’ or ‘friendly competition’ would have better served you.

Many of us, including myself, have been around lifting for a long time. I’ve seen all the hyperbole I can stand in the gym, and in ‘normal’ society. Everyone here knows what 10% bodyfat actually looks like, and what a 240 lb guy at that bodyfat really is. Which, just so you know, is more or less Arnold’s size in his prime. This is why your original thread was met with skepticism. You pretty much said you had a friend who was the size of Arnold who couldn’t squat 400 lbs. That was insane to me, and it turned out to be a gross exaggeration.

If I post anymore in this thread I’ll be more positive. And if you want any training or diet advice to beat your friend, I would be more than happy to help with that as well.

I appreciate the info. Good points about calling it a “meet”, looking back that makes no sense. I will let you know when I have any updates.

In the mean time I am going to train using the westside system 4 times a week, continue my protein supplementation, and make sure I am recovering. My friend told me he was going to spend more time squatting in the next 6 months so I think we will both be a lot stronger by the time the competition comes around. My bench has gone from 155 in 2011 to 250 now. It has really slowed down in the last 6 months. I changed my programming to westside about 3 months ago. I am getting stronger benching twice a week (max effort, speed day). I also have been spending more time trying to bring up my triceps and upper back. Time will tell.

If ‘westside style’ training is working for you, I would definitely keep it up, but keep in mind that Westside trains ‘geared’ lifters almost exclusively. Speed days have a lot more relevance to geared lifting than they do to raw lifting, from what I understand. So if you really stall at any point using this method, consider using a different template. I’ve found that a basic 5 sets of 5 on bench has been sufficient for substantial gains. I pushed my own bench press over 300 benching once a week, for several sets of 3-5.

No weight class? Gain some weight; your lifts will go up. 2 cups of milk + 2 scoops of whey twice a day, in addition to your normal diet, will probably do wonders.

There are a LOT of options, as far as training goes. I would recommend linear Ed Coan style program , see joeskopec.com - joeskopec Resources and Information. Keep in mind that the general peaking program there, I believe, is more for geared lifters. The %'s towards the end of the program aren’t obtainable if you lift raw the whole way through, and will need adjustment. Start light.
