I agree with Prof. X, take away the setting of an olympic lift meet and there is no way to determine if this guy’s physique is functional or not.

However, given that he is an olympic lifter it we can assume that his physique is more functional than someone who just lifts for size or strength.

I don’t know what the exact definition of functional strength is but I would venture a guess that it involves applying your strength in real life situations or sport. Like shuffling down the line of scrimmage, taking on blocks, and making tackles like a linebacker. Or lifting and perhaps carrying an odd shaped or unbalanced object like a refridgerator or a full 55 gallon drum.

I would think an olympic lifter would be better suited for something like this. It obvously takes great strength, coordination, and core strenght to lift 2x your body weight over your head in one swift move. Generally speaking I would think people who train for strong man competitions would be the most “functional” group.

But there are always exceptions. I golf with a “powerbuilder” who benches 500lbs. and is a scratch golfer. He drives the ball 3-350 all day long. Isn’t that functional too?

I think bodybuilders get a bad rap for not being “functional” because they spend so much time lifting, eating, sleeping, shaving, tanning, that they don’t put any effort into activities that require coordination like golf, etc. Anyone concur with this theory?

That means he weighs only a little over 150 pounds, right? Wow. Well, he obviously has nothing to offer guys like Prof X then. I mean, you have to weigh over a certain amount to know anything according to the good Prof. In fact, Abdullah is clearly a dumb newbie with that bodyweight!

I don’t think you’re being fair to ProfX. He would only say that this guy needs to eat more.

That guy must be really short. Thats pretty hyooge looking for 150.

This page shows the various physiques of weightlifters. Nicholay doesn’t even look like he lifts weights. Check out the squat positions of the Japanese lifters. They are ass to grass - literally. If my ass ever touched the ground in a squat, call 911, because chances are, something got broken.

He looks very short and he is certainly feeling “the force”.

Actually Prof X’s physique was proportionally almost identical to that one 5 years and 50 pounds ago.
