since we are adding all of this stuff to the drink … would it be logical to add say… 5-10 grams of creatine… or no?
Mike how much did all this cost you if you dont mind me asking?
Has anyone considered using MALTOFERN as the post-workout carb. source? I made this suggestion to John B. a few months back and he said he would look into it, but I have not heard since then. In addition, he was not in the mood to throw us a bone at the seminar concerning his “KFC Secret Recipe”…maybe we should have (and should now) prodded him a bit more with like a pig-shocker or something?
Here is what I along with the guys I trained found to be the best. For your base use Creatine AC from metrx. It contains 94grams of pure glucose,12.4grams of micronized creatine,10grams of glutamine peptide and 400mgs of alpha lipoic acid. Now to that add 60grams of hydro 520 protein from Protein Factory and while you are their get there BCAA powder and their glutamine peptide powder. Add an additional 15grams of glutamine peptide and add 10grams of BCAA mix. I personally also add 4grams of Taurine and I am about to experiment with adding even more powdered products. Anything from acetyl carnitine to hmb to tmg etc. But I do recommend you use the formula from above and I must say the Taurine is an extra kicker to the formula. We take this right at the end of our workout. Then wait 40 minutes and slam down 70-100 grams of a casein whey blend like metrx, grow etc.
Chris, the cost per kilogram (2.2 lbs) is around $17.50. Cheaper than Designer Protein–thanks to the relatively low protein content. I’m trying it with both orange and vanilla flavoring. If this doesn’t mask the taste sufficiently I’ll throw in some fruit juice as per Free’s suggestion.
It might be worth throwing a packet of cool aid into the mix. No carbs: just pure and fairly potent flavoring.
Using Koolaid is a good idea. I’ve recently been using it but it gets expensive shortly after. Crystal light, by the way, does not work in masking the flavor.
What does it taste like with Koolaid? Probably not as bad, but does it taste good, or at least palatable?
hi t men…these are interesying ideas…but is everyone getting the same results Berardi got in his articles…and also i don’t mean to be a bitch…but kool aid is loaded w/carbs correct?
You have to add sugar to Kool-aid. Just dump some of the powder into the drink. It’s the best masking agent I have found so far. It still does not taste good but it’s better than none at all. Try strong flavors, they work better.
I read through John B’s second post workout nurition article and I think I can get some better details concerning the amino acid ratio’s by looking up the references, however, the library at the school I attend only has about half the pertinent references. Can anyone help me out with finding these references: Journal of Applied Physiology, Acta Physiologia Scandinavica, and Meeting-Canadian Society for Excercise Physiology. Thanks bro’s!!!
If you guys have the time check out the Journal of Applied Physiology Vol 88, issue 2, 386-392 February 2000. Titled: An oral essential amino acid-carbohydrate supplement enhances muscle protein anabolism after resistance exercise. In this study 6 grams of essential amino acids and 35 grams of sucrose were administered 1 and 3 hours after resistance exercise. I suggest you read some of the references in the last post workout article in this weeks t-mag.

Looks like the Protein Factory has been getting some good business lately!
Here’s the formula I’m trying out. I just ordered it today:
Hydro Whey 520: 14.238g (9.6%)
Hydro Casein: 33.222g (22.4%)
Dextrose: 34.38g (23.2%)
Maltodextrin: 51.57g (34.8%)
BCAA: 10.0g (6.7%)
Glutamine Peptides: 5.0g (3.4%)
Fruit Punch Flavoring
Sucralose
Total Serving Size: 148.41g
$8.39/lb
I know, you’re probably looking at this thinking, “Why the hell did he add caseine?” Normally it’s a slow-acting protein, but it turns out that the hydrolyzed casein they sell at the Protein Factory has an even lower molecular weight than the hydrolyzed whey (casein 360, whey 520) and so it should be absorbed even faster. I also used hydrolyzed whey hoping to balance out the amino acid profile. I didn’t think about using maltofern, I’m sure it tastes like, but I have a feeling this is going to taste like shit anyway so I may as well give it a try. A combination of maltodextrin, maltofern and dextrose might work well.
By the way, don’t bother adding bovine serum or aminogen to the mix. Bovine serum will only slow the absorption because the molecules are too big, and aminogen wouldn’t help because the proteins are already in peptide form.
Why are you guys leaving out fenugreek andor g3g4? IMHO thats a big mistake, when I added the fenu I noticed a big difference in the effect.
Don’t forget the cinnamon. There have been some studies recently with diabetics showing that 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of cinnamon with a meal potentiates the effect of insulin. - Nylo
Just an idea, but for the masking agent mint extract works good. I haven’t tried in the pw drink, waiting for the indgrdients, but I found it does mask nasty tasting whey. Throw in a bit of cocoa powder and it might be palatable.
ive been keeping at it, and it keeps getting better…but it keeps getting more expensive as it does…i can say for sure now that the fenugreek extract helps a fair bit…but as for taste, i add no flavoring :)…it isnt palatable to normal people, but i havent puked yet…i dont think im human…i let my friend try a sip of one, and he gagged…ha ha…must be all that dog feces i added in! j/k
hey steve… what keeps making your pw drink better… are you leaning more towards other amino acids or what?
Where is everyone getting the fenugreek extract?
