Post-Workout Drink

After taking CT’s “Success Quiz,” I’ve realized that the lack of a post-workout drink in my training could be hurting my efforts. Unfortunately, I am unable to buy Surge since my dad thinks it’ll mess me up or something. Basically, since it says “consult a doctor before using this product” on the package, he thinks it’s dangerous, and I shouldnt take it.

So are there any other options? Could i maybe make my own shake? What i’ve been doing is just eating 2 small meals post-workout. One right after I finish my workout and one 30 minutes later. The meals consist of .4 grams of protien per lb of bodyweight and .8 grams of carbs per lb of bodyweight. I read those are good amounts in one of Berardi’s articles somewhere.

Anyway, is this good enough? Or are there better options for someone who cant buy surge? I’m afraid asking my doctor is out of the question, as last time i went he said that i shouldn’t drink a protien shake because “it might contain steroids” and that I only need the amount of protien in a peice of meat the size of a pack of cards per day.

Soo… what else can i do?

OK, I spent some time thinking of what you should do, and I realized that if you were to print out the articles about how SURGE is really an awesome PWO, your dad and doc would probably just dismiss it as an advertisement and corporate propaganda. SO, my reasoning has led me to offer you the following ideas.

Explain to your dad that you could use your own hard earned cash and pay him back if he buys it with the ol’ visa card.

if this doesn’t work, call some supplement stores in the area around you, and ask how much they sell SURGE for. You’ll see that T-Nation sells it for less, so you should tell your dad that it will save YOU money if he pays by CC as opposed to you going to a nutrition store.

If this doesn’t work, I’m sure some clever members on this site can think of some better ways to help you out.

try this drink my man:
16oz milk
tbls flaxseed oil
1 bannana
1/2 cup oatmeal
1/2 cup dry nonfat milk powder

ive used this concoction for 2 years now and i drink it 3 times a day. this should get you by until you can replace the milk powder with grow! yur dad cant argue against good ol food

The post-workout intake is in my opinion one of the MOST important aspects in working out. Surge by far is one of the best, especially at $21! Tell ol’ dad that its pointless for you to bust your ass in the gym if your not going to feed what your body needs. You need that liquid blend of carbs/sugar/protein!

wek, just eat a meal within 30 minutes of walking out of the gym. Have a P+C meal of white rice, oatmeal, sweet potatoes or yams and a LEAN protein source; chicken, fish, shrimp.

Pre-workout nutrition is going to be more important if you’re not in a position to optimize your post-workout nutrition. A protein shake like Grow! and a small amount of carbs, including a serving of fruit, would be ideal.

Good luck to you. If you have any other questions, don’t hesitate to ask.

TT is right on this one (wow. what.a.shock.). SURGE is great but there’s no dogma saying that you NEED it to grow!

Stick with TT, she’ll steer you right!

Cheers

Wek, i cannot stress enough the importance of a post workout shake. Surge is awesome because it has a great blend of protein hdyrolsate(fastest absorbing protein available) and carbs. I strongly suggest you read John Berardi’s “solving the post workout puzzle” articles. It is the only advice you will ever need concerning this.

Have you ever considered having someone else buy it for you. (LOL…
Surge dealer).

For the past few days, I’ve been just dumping two scoops of protein powder into a quart bottle of Gatorade, which has worked well in the shortsighted sense of how I feel after drinking it. I think JB mentioned something about this; I definitely got the idea from an article on post-workout nutrition, but I couldn’t swear as to whether it was or wasn’t something by JB.

I have to warn you, though – it is an acquired taste. My trainer shudders every time I take a sip of it, and several people at the gym consider me somewhat scary for even trying it, but I go to a really wimpy gym. If you’re hardcore enough to take flax seed oil from a spoon, this is nothing.

If anyone’s thinking about saving some money doing this, it’s worth noting that by my math, Biotest Surge is actually cheaper. I pay $50 for 5 pounds of whey isolate, which gives me 20 two-scoop servings for $2.50 each, which when added to a $1.89 quart of Gatorade gives a per-serving cost of $4.39; assuming you mix your Biotest Surge with water, the per-serving cost is $2.10 – which is less than half what I’m paying.

Its sad when you start to enjoy the taste of straight flax oil…

I don’t understand why people think it’s so awful in the first place. It’s just sort of a grassy flavor, which reminds me of fresh hay more than anything else.

If it tastes bad and is more expensive, then why are you drinking it instead of Surge?

Also, if you want to save money, start with your protein. There are many places where you can get 10lbs for about $50.

I was doing something similar to this for a while before I got some Surge. I would put a scoop of whey and 2 scoops of instant gatorade powder (tasted best with orange) in a bottle an mix it up after my workout. 20g of P and 40g of C. This saved a bunch of money on the gatorade. This comes out to about a dollar a shake. I still use it pre-workout, with Surge post-workout.

doctors for the most part are dumb when it comes to weight training and nutrition in general…and your dad won’t buy you some Biotest Surge then just down three cups of skim milk blended with some sugar(6 tsp)and some lactose enzyme pills if needed…but if you can get him to buy some Classic Grow! for you just add the sugar to that…I know it costs more but you get more servings and more protein per serving as well…Surge is at the top of my list then Classic Grow! with sugar…then skim milk with 6 tsp of sugar at the bottom…but when it comes down to it you have to do what you have to do skim milk and sugar is the cheapest…or even another choice is to down some sort of juice (12 oz.) grape being the best post work out but what ever you like…then eat a can of tuna afterwards

live long and lift heavy

I buy gatorade powder and use it to give me 60 grabs of fast carbs and mix it in 900 mls of cold water and add one or two scoops of Low Carb Grow! (vanilla, you dont want chocolate with gatorade just doesnt work). Sometimes when i run out of gatorade and am in a rush i just mix protein with koolaid:)

This one liter pwo drink ends up providng over 60 grams(depending on how much powder you use) of fast crabs and 20-40 grams of protein(depending on how many scoops of protein powder i add). Top it off with 3-5 grams of creatine if you chose.

A fair question, and one that in recent weeks has been much on my mind. It is my considered opinion that they’re nesting.

Oops! Wrong forum. Sorry. Start again.

It only tastes bad until you get used to it. I actually like it by this point, and it’s only been a couple days. As far as the expense goes, I’m not really concerned about cost right now; over the long haul, yes, I’m concerned about cost… but for the moment, I’m more concerned about getting my act together. I’ve only been at this for a couple weeks, so my whole diet is being overhauled. I’ll concern myself with fine-tuning exactly which products at exactly what time in a month or two, after I get the major motions.

I mentioned the cost primarily because I only work out twice a week, so it’s only about $50 a month out of my pocket. But if I was working out seven days a week, as many people here do, I’d be wasting about $200 a month. I wouldn’t be comfortable with that, so I wanted to make sure nobody else got started down that road without being properly informed.

thats a great meal replacement, but would never use it for a post workout shake, oatmeal, milk, oatmeal, and flax are all low GI foods…think about.

I use gatoride with vanilla whey protein. After spending money on Grow!, Power Drive, Alpha Male, and ZMA, I don’t have any left for Surge. I think it taste just fine, I use straight vanilla whey protein and it doesn’t seem to affect the flavor of the gatorade, actually the gatorade is a little watered down due to the concentration. I use JB’s formula’s to figure out what I need: grams powders in drink divided by ml of water, I usually end up with about a 7-8% concentration.

Wek, I am sorry to hear you are having such trouble with your Dad and Doctor when you are working so hard to improve your body.

I cannot believe in this day and age there are still these doctors out there. Every magazine, book, journal, etc. these days are saying the same thing. Proteing is important!

John Berardi wrote an article called Dear Mom and Dad (link Below) which addresses your specific problem.

All I can say is get as informed as you can about the world of Nutrition and training. Read everything you can get your hands on. If your dad is unwilling to take advice from the internet, pick up a few Men’s Health/ Men’s Fitness magazines. These are not as quite as hardcore and forward thinking as our beloved T-Nation, but even they say post workout shakes/ high protein intake is important.

Be honest with your Dad about what you want to achieve and how you wish to go about doing it. If you can, get a second opinion from a Doctor that wasn’t educated in the days before sterilization techniques.

Good luck and keep training hard!
