Posing In The Gym...?

Except for Lee Priest. Every picture I see of him is a picture of him in the gym with his pants around his ankles. The man is a nudist crackpot.

I would suspect that the majority of posing would be for competition? To me it would make sense that this would be at the end of a workout, or a workout on its own. I wouldn’t think a couple of poses between sets would help your form too much.

They used to actually practice their entire routine with their music in the aerobics room because of the lighting and the mirrors. I used to watch sometimes just because it struck me as being dedicated that they seemed to have it down to an art instead of simply going through the motions.

These guys were big enough, though, that they didn’t need to show off. Walking into the gym with a tank top on was enough to get people talking. Either way, I respected what they did and probably would not respect the much smaller guy who is posing in the gym mirror when he really isn’t that big at all.

It depends on the individual. If people look at you when you are posing and mentally go “Daaaaaaammmmmmnnnnn”, then you are allowed to pose.

If they look at you and think “what the fuck is chicken legs over there doing?” then you probably shouldn’t do it.

i agree with this

I aint steroid massive, but I’ve got my shit together. If people want to call me that guy, then so be it. I got no problem with that

Do what you gotta do.

Just make sure you do it well.

If you look like this you probably should not compete either.

a. be impressed (if you’re in good shape)
b. be totally repulsed by your egotism.

Ok, bad analogy, but hopefully you get my point. Self absorbed men make bad lovers and worse dates.

So, to answer your question – if I saw you doing this in the gym, I would be totally turned off. Sorry! I know it’s all about your “pump” – but you ask for the female persective… which leads me to think that MAYBE its not just about how you view yourself, but how others view you. Which makes it even worse.

That’s some great insight there. First, let me assure you that I am not self-absorbed. At the same time, I understand how it must look from a female’s perspective.

I do not pose to try and impress any females I may be interested in. In fact, I’ve always adopted the philosophy that you listed in B above…they’re probably turned off by it. So yes, I do wonder, ‘Hey, there’s a girl who I’d like to talk to. Should I hold off on the posing today so as not to scare her away immediately?’

There have been many times when I’ve talked to women in the gym, and even asked alot of them out, my last two girlfriends I met at the gym. I like to meet women at the gym, and I’m not naive. So if I spot an attractive woman who I’d like to approach at some time in the near future, I usually tone down, or cut out the posing. I mean I love to compete, but I ain’t Mr. O so not posing for a session or two won’t make a difference. But, if it’s just a bunch of ugly dudes talking about getting smashed over the weekend…then I let the lats fly

Thank you for the female perspective, it’s much appreciated.

Today I had the misfortune of watching three approximately 110lbs college kids “lifting” in jeans and wifebeaters and stopping between everyset to get on the cellphone, walk over to the mirror and pul up their shirts to look at their abs. No matter what exercise they were currently attempting, they’d walk over, pull up their shirts and flex their abs.

I hit the odd double biceps and most muscular after my workout sometimes. Gotta make the most of the pump!

I don’t do it when surrounded by people however and keep it brief.

At home however, that’s another story…

However, I’ve seen alot of guys who look like…well…shit, posing like they are tough guys. Even bigger guys who do look like assholes, but the people I have in mind are the ones who walk around doing curls and bullshitting with people.

I think if I’m in the gym, and see a guy who is obviously serious about lifting, and I see him pose, then he gets a pass (although it will still seem narcisitc, at least the guy has a reason besides showing off for the chicks on the stairclimbers).

I’ve seen NPC competitors posing in the aerobics room at the gym. They might hit a couple of poses in the changing room right before they leave, but I have never seen any just start any real posing on the gym floor unless it was strictly because people were asking them too.

The guys I’m talking about were weighing about 240lbs in contest shape though. I would honestly think someone of average height under 200lbs doing the same is just looking for attention.[/quote]

The last thing I want is attention

Thanks man. To me, competition is a great motivating factor and I thoroughly enjoy the process. However, it isn’t the end of the world.

Like I’ve said, I’ve competed in 7 shows and I’ve been posing now for like 4 years. I’ve won a best poser award for my routine, which I enlisted professional help to put together. Also, I’ve received a handful of compliments from judges over the years on my posing technique and control.

So I’ve got it down. I just pose at the gym now b/c it kicks my workouts into a whole new realm of intensity. If I happen to catch a little hottie over on the stair stepper that I’m fixing to coerce to go out with me…then I’ll tone down the posing and save if for the living room.

Someone mentioned this before, but since I normally train in the early afternoons, the gym is usually pretty empty when I’m in there and most of the people who are in there are aware that I’m a competitive bodybuilder, even if they’ve never spoken with me. So most of the time it’s like I’m in there alone anyway.

This thread is pointless without pictures of you posing. I want a back double bi and lat spread for starters.

Get to it!

Here a couple shots from a show I did two years ago. These were taken on Friday morning after we applied the Pro-Tan for the Saturday show.

These are the most recent digital pics I have, but I plan on getting some at next week’s show so I can post those too.

I don’t have any Lat Spreads b/c I didn’t want to put my hands on my waist as the Pro-Tan was not completely dry…!

I welcome all criticism

Definitely some good shots, you are well built for sure, I do think howeve you should’ve been leaner for a comp, and you’re holding way too much water, but maybe you were drying out then I don’t know. I don’t even compete so take that with a grain of salt. But you don’t have to sing to be a producer either.

Anyways as for posing. Maybe this will answer your question. I think it’s stupid when I do it, but not when others do it.

I’m one of the more bodybuilder type of guy at my gym and when I do pose it is NEVER anything like a front double bi, or shit like that. I’ll wander over to the far corner, and hit lat spreads and most musculars and sometimes pull the shorts up betweem sets of squats, but I doubt people see me. I just find it helps with my vascularity when I do flex betweem sets.

Holy shit, nice calves! (fucker), (joke)

Thanks for the input man.

I agree with you 100% as I do need to be leaner and I was still holding water in these pics. Also, keep in mind it was 8am and I was still barely awake w/o any presence of a pump.

Now, I’m slightly bigger and considerably leaner and have learned how to lose more water. So I’m excited for next saturday…

But thanks for the comments

Haha…thanks man

They were on sale at Wal-Mart…one for $9.95, or two for $14.95

So I took the deal

I respect that you like to pose, just keep it out of the gym as far as I’m concerned. I guess it depends on the gym, but I’d be the guy smiling and shaking his head.

This coming from the guy who is posing in his avatar and displaying it on THE INTERNET.

I have no problem with posing, I don’t compete and don’t plan on competing, I work out for me, I stretch out my muscles after a set, and I will oftentimes pose between sets as well. I generally do it out of the way or in other rooms, but I have also trained with a few Pro bodybuilders from time to time, and they posed, I posed, random other people posed. It was fun.

It seems like a few people here think the gym is a monestary or something, do I shake my head that you may not be using as much weight as me? Is there a magic weight that a person has to be before they can flex and pose? how about a certain poundage before somebody can use the squat rack? Maybe 500lbs, you can’t use the rack for anything less than a 500lbs squat, because honestly, anything less than that is laughable.

And from now on, nobody can use a 5X5 program until they bench twice their bodyweight.

Honestly, I will pose and I will yell at my training partner when he isn’t putting enough effort into a lift, I will sweat and I will stink.
I will make as much noise and disturb every person in the gym that isn’t focusing enough on their own workouts that they could possibly be bothered by a person who stands off to the side and strikes a pose.
I will do that and they can shake their heads and laugh all they want, because I do this for me, nobody else.
