Posing In The Gym...?

It’s kinda like someone singing at work: it makes you a little uncomfortable, but you really don’t mind too much if the person has a good voice. However, there are a lot of folks out there that think they can sing that cannot. In those cases you just think it’s too bad that someone doesn’t have the balls to tell them the truth.

Sorry Gojira, I couldn’t follow what you are saying.

Yes, Nice Avatar.

I knew there was a reason that I didnt like wal-mart. Now i know why.

Everyone at some time or another checks themselves out in the mirror. Even if you are just starting out and weigh 1501bs with no muscle. It’s fine if you do it for A) a reality check to remind yourself to train harder B) Check for lagging parts C) make sure there are no brown stains on the back of your shorts.

Seriously, it can be a good motivating factor. Just don’t stare too long.

I started to pose between sets also. I started to do this because I need of some serious practice with some of these poses before my first comp.

At first I was really self-conscious about it. But now I really don’t give a shit. I think it not only helps my training and gives me some much need density in my body, but some confidence in my own body awarness during the pose.

I think most people think you can just flex your biceps and it will look good. Well its not that easy, being able to show good muscle control, position awarness, and symmentry all while trying to look like your not craping your pants is extremely hard.

I also train during a slow time at the gym so its not much of a concern. I do think though some people appreciate the aspect of training for a BB comp, by seeing you pose.

I respect that you like to pose, just keep it out of the gym as far as I’m concerned. I guess it depends on the gym, but I’d be the guy smiling and shaking his head.

OK, here is my female perspective. As others have said, it depends a lot on if you have earned the privledge to pose in the gym. I see lots of skinny guys posing in the gym & I think they are taking up valuable space. I think if you have the physique to be posing in the gym, I understand that you need to practice and I wouldn’t care, just stay out of the squat rack!
However, on a personal level, I may think you have a overabundant ego & would not think any better of you for posing in the gym, so don’t do it for the ladies. The guys who compete at my gym are all the guys I work out with, so I don’t mind if they are posing because i know they know what they are doing. However, they rarely do b/c they save everyone else’s agony by doing it in the aerobics room where they can practice their routine.

In summary, don’t do it to impress the ladies & if you do it in the gym just stay out of the way!

On a side note, if you don’t do it for the ladies, why do you ask for a female perspective? Are you just worried about scaring them away, as stated earlier?

Not sure what the problem with this is?

My problem with it is that I can’t imagine how or why people would want to spend hundreds of thousands of hours in the gym, planning meals, and specially trying to get sleep to just to get some ass.

I don’t primarily cater my bodybuilding goals to what women think is attractive. If I did, I believe that would not make me a true bodybuilder, but rather someone simply looking to get laid. I’d hope that someone really serious about any sport would have more significant goals on their mind than simply getting their dick wet.

Most girls I know would prefer me less muscular and leaner, but I know that I have enough game and personality that I don’t need to be their “ideal” Brad Pitt to get some action.

There is nothing wrong with wanting to get laid, I sure as hell do, but having it be the only or primary goal of lifting just doesn’t seem very noble to me.

If you are 150 lbs and pose in the mirror for a reality check you don’t need to be in the gym you need counseling.

If you are 150 lbs and are checking for lagging bodypart I got a news flash for you everything is lagging if not down right lacking and you need to stop posing and start eating and training.

If you waite till you are on the gym floor and use posing as an excuse to look for shit stains in your drawers.
Again counseling comes to mind.

Unless you are a 12 yr old kid dreaming of standing on the posing dias one day then at 150 lbs you do not need to be posing on the gym floor, contest stage, or locker room.

It also won’t keep you lifting. These will be the future fat asses of America talking about how in shape they used to be before they got married. There are millions of people like that.

I have had the following conversation at least once per week for the last 10 years:

Some random guy “Oh so what are you like a body builder or powerlifter?”
Me: “Bodybuilding and strongman”
SRG "Yeah I used bench 300, have the wash board abs, before I got married, now I just just don’t have the time…
ME “Uh yeah, I know what you mean?”

Or
Some random guy “Oh so what are you like a body builder or powerlifter?”
Me: “Bodybuilding and strongman”
SRG " yeah my negihbor was like Mr. Universe or something. Im going to start training with him pretty soon."

That sounds all too familiar.

I also love when some of my non-lifting friends try to get into a battle of wits with me about training, nutrition, supplementation, steroids, etc.

After proving logically the fallacy of most of their perceptions, they go on to say, “Man, I gonna get started tomorrow.” Instead, they go to Burger King and get a double whopper meal and sit on their asses watching some miserable sport all day.

Needless to say, I see less and less of them as the years go by…

would you consider a quick flash of the tricep, or bicep a “pose”, or maybe a lat flare at the end of a set of rows, or deads? if thats posing then i guesss i pose, it’s always at the end of a set and only the muscle i was just working. i try my hardest not to look like i am trying to flex, so i hope i don’t count as a “poser”. if so i will stop.

Wow, that is the story of my life! I find myself slowly weeding out people who are negative in my life or not conducive to my goals. I much more enjoy being around people who can have an educated disussion about training than people who have never walked the walk but act like they do!

Yes, I was wondering if my intuition was right. I’ve always guessed that by posing in the gym I’m scaring off some of the ladies I’d like to talk to. So I wanted to get some female insight. I do not pose in the gym to impress the girls, because I feel if anything it scares them off and best case scenario is they don’t even give a shit.

And so far my prediction was right, in that the two females who have responded so far have both said that it’s a sign of a self-absorbant ego. That’s not my personality, and I’d like to avoid giving off that impression to anyone (especially attractive brunettes).

At the same time, my posing is important when I’m in competition training, so I’m trying to find a balance…

To me posing is hitting an actual pose that I would use in a competition, such as a side chest shot, or a lat spread, or whatever and holding for anywhere from 8-20s. “Flexing” essentially achieves the same end result of trying to squeeze the muscle, but can be alot more inconspicuous. It’s kind of tough to do a back double biceps and pretend you’re just standing there.

So whether or not you consider yourself a “poser”…I don’t know

LOL. This is all too true.

You’re “that guy”, sorry but you are. If you are fricken huge, it’s slightly more acceptable, but even in that case you’re “that guy.”

I aint steroid massive, but I’ve got my shit together. If people want to call me that guy, then so be it. I got no problem with that

See, if I looked at the guy, and he looked the part, as in, he’s big enough to the point where he looks like he’s a competitive bodybuilder, I could see posing.

However, I’ve seen alot of guys who look like…well…shit, posing like they are tough guys. Even bigger guys who do look like assholes, but the people I have in mind are the ones who walk around doing curls and bullshitting with people.

I think if I’m in the gym, and see a guy who is obviously serious about lifting, and I see him pose, then he gets a pass (although it will still seem narcisitc, at least the guy has a reason besides showing off for the chicks on the stairclimbers).

I’ve seen NPC competitors posing in the aerobics room at the gym. They might hit a couple of poses in the changing room right before they leave, but I have never seen any just start any real posing on the gym floor unless it was strictly because people were asking them too.

The guys I’m talking about were weighing about 240lbs in contest shape though. I would honestly think someone of average height under 200lbs doing the same is just looking for attention.
