Porn Addiction

I think that people that are addicted to gambling are addicted to losing. I am not certain how this could necessarily be studied, but some people don’t seem to think everything is right in the world until they’ve spent every last rent and food dollar on the slots or whatever and they have nothing. Its like the universe has come through again and proven their worth through their losses or something and everything is right in the world some type of sick feeling of fulfilled unhappiness.

You don’t know any gambling addicts, do you?

“THIS TIME I’M GOING TO WIN!!”

“OK… THIS TIME!!”

“Shit. Ok, NOW?!?”

“One last time… C’MON BIG MONEY!!!”

lol! My thoughts exactly. Gambler’s fallacy is a pretty good hook for many.

A few. And they rarely can walk out winners. Even when they are up they play til they lose. I think that in the end they are perversely happy they have lost it all and it fulfills a need for them. But thats just what I think. And I am more than certain what I think can and often is wrong. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Stop fucking ugly fat girls and you won’t have a problem…

So you are stating porn addiction is bad. No surprise there, addiction to anything is bad.

There is a chapter that deals with porn and deviance, too.

In short, there should be no question that sooner or later porn will have negative effect.

No Chushin, that book is bullshit. I’ve never read it or even looked at the Amazon reviews for it, but I know it.

Do a search for ‘porn is healthy’.

edit: My point being that if I am not mistaken you are a conservative Catholic so this source is confirming what you already believe.

Who used to be extremely addicted to porn, genius. I’m glad you assume I’m a saint, though. Thanks.

You can’t look at something like this with a bias or with morals… In fact internet porn addiction has nothing to do with morality, the seeking behavior of dopamine has no conscience about what is even deemed “pornographic” to the brain it is just seeking prim-oral instinct with the reward circuitry of the brain… Its a simple case of hyper stimulation to the same exact cause of effect that causes dopamine desensitization to other parts of the brain… Basically your dopamine signals become deadened and the only fix it can get is the vicious cycle of the problem in the first place… For internet porn it is the guy nudging you saying hey body I got that fix you need… Its way some people increasingly search for more graphic material and suddenly low and behold normal sex becomes something completely boring to them… It is with the case of all addictions that by certain factors some are more susceptible then others… Anyone that looks at pornography and can not simply give it up for whatever “reason” is effected in some sort of way or the other… Cases my be more adverse for certain individuals but it does not take away the fact that everyone can expect at least a few differences… If you do not want to believe what you hear and can’t give it up then by all means do what you want… Just don’t expect zero consequence for your actions.

The plural of anecdote is not data. I don’t much like porn, and I do feel like it can detrimental in quantity, but I think claiming that any amount of porn is inherently unhealthy ignores the fact that there’s always been porn and that there’s not any real studies that are peer reviewed that show that limited consumption of porn has measurable negative effects on people. Now, the net has made it easier to consume vast quantities of highly specialized and novel porn and that can be dangerous–but that’s a separate issue than porn being damaging in ANY quantity.

its more of a specific issue with MODERN pornography… Its not the same as looking at hustler or playboy… if you consider that pornographic, its a matter of NOVELTY addiction and actually is not even correlated to a sex addiction at all… The effects can come to effect sexual counters with real women and sexual health but in essence the problem itself is just an addiction to constant novelty seeking or pixels on a screen… It creates a warped view of what sex is actually like, You have some people that actually prefer porn to actual sex or see it as not to different then you have a potential problem… Its not natural to our ancient reward circuitry system thats the problem… It is an unnatural environment of virtually endless supply of something the brain can not register as being different from real… It will adapt to the changes and think it hit some sort of evolutionary jack pot, again it is all really really simple in normal terms… Desensitization and Hyper stimulation in the frontal cortex… Your brain is just trying to get as much as it can while the opportunity is present. It also will make changes to the brain that lay down like large electrical circuits that become reinforced to certain stimuli that it sees rewarding… Just simply the seeking and reward nature of the brain… It just so happens that with pornography masturbation is involved… But that alone does not mean your not at risk if you don’t do so while viewing because again it is the same fundamental changes that happen as when someone is addicted to any other such thing… I.E. food

I’ve made no assumptions of who you used to be, simply what I have observed here. Again you are speaking of addiction which is unsurprisingly bad for the addict. I can speak from experience of one who is not addicted to porn in which I would say that my life is unaffected by whether I do or don’t view porn for the day.

If I correctly understood what you were trying to convey here, it seems like pumping your Johnson to some topless chick playing with herself or getting fucked by some guy shouldn’t illicit any change in the “electrical circuits” in the brain that would cause a desensitisation to actual sex.

You’re talking about tricking the brain, which would require a large quantity of `artificial’ material.

I want to ask you your opinion on something – if a guy has a sexual fantasy that he can’t live out in real life, are you saying that if he gets enough of that by viewing it online he will eventually become desensitised to actual sex and hence lose some ability to sexually perform? What would be the time period of this transgression?

Another thing – is it simply a case of frequency or is any `artificially sourced stimulation’ threatening to actual sexual stimulation?

You’ve pretty much got it. It’s a case of what the brain perceives (and has no ability to distinguish as different from) an endless stream of novel sexual partners. The fact that we are literally able to indulge in hundreds of different sexual partners or encounters in a single setting is something the human brain is not wired for, and has never, at any point in history, had the capability of indulging in.

As for the posters who seem to be getting hung up on my mentioning that I feel that pornography is generally unhealthy, this is NOT the crux of the issue. Are you arguing that it is the opposite? If so, how so? That it is TOTALLY neutral? If so, why the urge to indulge in it in the first place? Anyone who has used a modern tube site to beat off can tell you that the act can be, and almost certainly is, stimulating in the extreme. So, again, are you suggesting this has NO net effect, positive or negative, upon the brain? So far I hear a lot of this “Well I do this and I’m fine,” from the same crowd his is demanding that I produce study after study to prove my side. Something about a pot and a kettle.

Anyway it’s all a side issue, to be honest. The crux of the issue is laid out pretty well in the two posts above this one.
