Pork is awesome. Very cheap, seems pretty lean. My question is if anyone uses this as a staple as apposed to beef (any permutation). Is there a benefit v. beef? Do they shoot the pigs up with hormones to the extent of beef cattle? Do they eat the same feed? I know they are horribly foul creatures in person, but they taste SO FUCKING GOOD.
typically pork has a much higher fat content the beef, and a lower protein content. Pork as raised by your commercial farms in a single pen animal, which stands in its shit, eats its shit, and whatever else it can put in its mouth. Cattle on the other hand are a pickier animal-it it true that many are raised feed lot style, but normal farm raised cattle are fed, hay, grass, and grain-mix. Typical farm raised pigs are still raised in a muddy pen, full of shit and piss, eat their own young, will run off if the chance comes and are overall still a nasty animal. Beef is superior nutritionally, but your right-Pork taste good!
You think pigs are ‘horribly foul creatures’?
That goes against everything I’ve ever read about pigs being the cleanest animals around. Odd
What do hormones in the cattle have to do with eating the meat? You can’t eat hormones and get any effect from it.
And nothing beats lean beef for putting on mass.
my family used to raise pigs. i don’t know where you got the idea they are clean animals bonez… maybe if you wash them off every night. i wouldn’t call them clean at all. they’re mean, too. dirty, mean, ugly, prickly, and all around unpleasant animals. i am not a fan of pigs or pork (excepting bacon).
All you have to do is drive past a pig farm. If you think a feed lot (cattle) smells horrid, you might actually gag at the smell of pigs. I think beef might actually be better bang for your buck, especially lean ground beef which is very protein dense. I personally eat little to no pork products.
Damn. Well then back to ground beef for me! Yea I’ve been to several pig farms. Up to their snouts in shit, the size of a Volkswagen Beetle angry fuckers. Bite your hand off they will.
Pork is so cheap because it has the lowest quality of all of the tremendously atrocious feedlot-type mass feeding operations. I think from a nutritional standpoint, commercial beef is probably significantly better than commercial pork.
Bacon rules, though.
Also, to therizza, if your name applies to RZA (of Wu-Tang), you get a gold star.

Hmm obviously a city guy like me will defer to your country ass ;). I just heard that pigs don’t eat their own shit and other farm animals do. Obviously they are dirty on the outside. And yes I know bad pig manuer is.

My name does refer to the RZA. You are the 3rd person to get that.

I think most of the rest of us just kind of took it for granted. You don’t see posters typing ‘Hey, your handle’s from that comic book, isn’t it?’ to ProfX, do you?
Pigs are dirty because we put them behind fences, in dirt.
If they were walked around like sheep or cows they’d obviously be cleaner, by virtue of not living in knee-deep mud.
That aside, I eat alot of pork because it’s cheaper, the protein content is the same, and, unless eating neck chops or bacon, it’s fairly lean.
I would be sceptical of eating it in countries with questionable food policies and practices howver, as the pigs, being fed third-grade food and living in dirt or unsanitary conditions, often have parasites.
Which, interestingly enough, is the sole reason why Muslims avoided pork in the first place. Trichines.

So which is it? Pork is higher or lower in protein (quantity/quality?) Some have said one thing, you another. I only buy pork scallopini or loin.

Seems about equal to me!
Most meats are equal in protein content, with the lower end of the spectrum being Pangasius, a catfish with about 16 g per 100, and the upper being Whale and Ostrich I believe, with 26 and 28 g per 100.
Most domesticated farm animals do, however, have the same protein content per unit of LEAN meat.

exactly. any animal kept in high-intensity growing conditions wont be as healthy or nutritious as a pastured animal. eg cows fed a grain-only diet (young bulls usually cheap meat and a quick profit) need magnesium supplementation due to the fact that GRAIN DIETS ARE SHIT, they can also go crazy, get the shakes and die.
The difference in taste between wild pigs vs. feedlot pigs is like night and day. Same goes for free-range cattle vs. feedlot cattle.
I got to accompany a tribe in the Cook Islands on a pig hunt, and that little bastard tasted better than any store bought pork I had ever had.

Here, about halfway down starts a pork dish:
Now that it doesn’t take 20 minutes per post on T-Nation, I might start posting recipes again. It was taking over an hour to post a few pics per dish…
