I have difficulty taking in more than 30 grams of protein in a sitting. I get facial swelling and a definite decrease in muscular definition that seems to only get better when my next meal contains mostly fat or carbs. I’m not sure what’s going on but it seems kind of like an allergic reaction? Anyway has anyone used any supplements to help with protein digestion and seen good results? Thanks.
Have you tried a variety of sources of protein? Tuna, powder- casein and whey, meat, etc. How about what you drink or eat along with the protein? Could that be the real cause? Maybe it’s a dairy thing; try some non-dairy protein. Just throwing out ideas here since I’ve never heard of an allergy related to protein in general. The forum would need more details to really help you out.
Thanks Tek, yes I’ve tried eating many different types of protein including those with lactose. All give basically the same reaction when taken above 30gr a shot. It is even worse when protein is eaten alone.
It sounds like you would benefit from a good digestive enzyme supplement. The best ones are plant based and the one I use personally and recommend is called simulase by tyler encapsulations. It is normally only sold to docs, but there is a doc who sells on the web. A web search should get the info for you. I have no financial interest in the company or the doc selling on the web.
use papaya enzyme plus, which has all different kinds of digestive enzymes for protein, fat, and carbs. check out puritanspride.com laters pk
I only get this when I am not taking in enough water. My body requires tons of water.
JJ,might be prudent for you to get some blood work done to check your liver and kidney function. If you can’t effectively remove urea, ammonia and other waste products of protein digestion, this could possibly cause symptoms.I’m not saying this is definitely your problem, but I would certainly get it checked out.
Also is your intake of EFA’S,especially omega-3’s up to par? Udo Erasmus, the fat guru' and Ray Audette, author of
Neanderthin’ have both written about the importance of proper fat intake and it’s relation to protein digestion.
Also,a good hydrochloric acid supplement for protein digestion, and pancreatin supplement for fat and carb digestion would be a wise idea. These are commonly recommended for folks over thirty, and I agree.Somewhere in one of the early issues of T-mag one of the authors wrote about how one of the best `protein supplements’ was in fact digestive enzymes.I forget the author, try the search.
Hope you get to the bottom of this, good luck.
