Poor Man's Pulling Harness

Okay, I had some trouble with the pictures, but I’ve resized them and it should be good to go now.

So, to put together a pulling harness on the cheap you will need

1.) a piece of strap, preferably a two incher, although the photos show a 1 incher.

2.) some sort of clasp or buckle, whatever you would like as long as it is suitably strong. The one shown is only rated for about 90 pounds and cost a few dollars at a hardware store.

Here’s the first pic, showing the strap and buckle:

Heres the second pic.

It shows the strap in a figure eight, with the buckle in my left hand so it will wind up comfortably on my left shoulder.

Here’s the third.

Note I just kind of slung it on, and I’ll tighten it in the next frame. You dont need to make sure it’s square and comfortable until you go to hitch up and cinch it tight.

This will have to get you started, I’ll post the last two that will complete the explanation, a link to where to get a premade, heavy duty two inch strap and buckle online, and maybe an action shot after my workout.

Hope this adds some fuel for thought!

Well, I just got turned away by the police, so I guess I won’t be using the university’s parking lot anymore…

Of course I’ll be finding a way to get around this, either by establishing a club and getting a use permit or filing a waiver of liability, anyway…

Here’s a picture showing the pivotal part, adjusting the harness. By holding the carabiner on the rough center of your back, or wherever you want it, and then tightening it to fit, you are forcing the harness to pull square.

Don’t pull it so tight the harness jams the carabiner into your back!

Here’s the last picture, the harness is on tight and ready to go. I tucked the extra in so it won’t swing around and get in the way.

The bewildered “geez I hope I look tough and aloof for the internet hotties” look is optional, as is the hillbillie t-shirt, the lack of hair and the wierd looking facial stubble.

Trashy looking clothes, resistance to filth and generally hobo-approved atire is HIGHLY reccomended for pulling success.

How badly does it chafe? I have been looking into the same thing (using climber webbing since there is a lot of it at my house). Is the 1 inch strap width chafe/cut in badly?

Yeah, the one inch can cut pretty badly. I mean, it didn’t draw blood or anything, but it wasn’t real pleasant. It seems like the 1 inch wants to choke you out when you pull heavy though. I highly suggest two inch strap.

Here’s the place to go:

It’s a little country joint in Douglas county, Missouri, a few counties over from the farm I grew up on.

I ordered the ready made two inch strap, 9 foot with buckle. I suppose if you are hyyooge then you could get a bigger one.

Works good for me. Ill post a picture of the new harness sometime, if you’d like.

Also, expirement with putting a half twist in your harness when you buckle it, so that when you make your figure eight it straightens out, then it doesnt get as twisted. It’s worth a try.

Theres another way and it seems cheap too. Go to Farm and Home, or some other implement store and buy a cinch. I think they come seperatly so you will need two, they look like large rope sleeves, then you simply hook them together with some type of choker ring and you got a really good and cheap harness. Theres a picture of me wearing one on my website.

Good stuff.

I don’t pull more than a couple of hundred pounds at a time so I can get away with an even cheaper version.

I use an old judo white belt that knotted together to make a big loop, I twist it into a figure 8, put my arms through the loops with the twisted part on my back hook my carabiner right in the middle and then hook up my nylon tow rope that it attached to my sand bags.

It’s nowhere near as good as yours but it worked in a pinch.

I know a few people that have gotten full body climbing harnesses and modified them to make pulling harnesses. Not sure what they did, but it can’t hurt to look into the idea.
