Politics, New Orleans Style!

Time to refill the freezer!

"NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (AP) – U.S. Rep. William Jefferson easily defeated his fellow Democratic opponent in a runoff election Saturday, despite an ongoing federal bribery investigation.

In complete but unofficial returns, Jefferson, Louisiana’s first black congressman since Reconstruction, received 57 percent of the vote over state Rep. Karen Carter, who had 43 percent.

Carter was unable to capitalize on a scandal that included allegations the FBI found $90,000 in bribe money in Jefferson’s freezer.

In a concession speech, Carter embraced family members and pledged to work with Jefferson, especially on the area’s recovery from Hurricane Katrina.

“I guess the people are happy with the status-quo,” she said.

Jefferson was forced into the runoff against Carter when he failed to win 50 percent of the vote in a crowded open multiparty primary. Carter had sought to become the first black woman from Louisiana elected to Congress.

He described his win as “a great moment, and I thank almighty God for making it possible.” He called for regional unity to focus on the hurricane recovery and in bringing back evacuees who are still scattered across the country.

His presence in Washington could be embarrassing for Democrats, who won control of Congress on a platform of cleaning up corruption."

The article neglects to mention that the FBI raided his house and found the money. Of course, everyone knows it was all a racist plot by the evil FBI…just like praising a fine black man (Tiki Barber) is racist too.

ROFLMAO!

Would you let it die? The GOP has just as much corruption. Politicians in general are the scum of the Earth.

Jeez. The GOP elects scumbags ALL the time. So do the dems. So grow up and attack policies instead of people, if you wanna make a point about a party.

And if your just attacking this particular guy, you better live in Louisiana.

Hey, I admire the guy. He’s a crook and got re-elected to Congress in spite of that.

I think Dems are crooks and Republicans are spineless, though I’m sure the level of criminality is about the same. The Dems seem to impress me more, guys like Murtha, Reid, Hastings,…

I’d like to flush 'em all down a toilet, after taking a nice smelly dump on 'em first.

You do know that people generally think the other way around? That the Dems are spineless and platformless, while the GOP has been extreme and corrupt as all hell during the Bush administration???

Where the hell are you getting the “spineless” GOP from?

And seriously… Tom DeLay, Hastert, Foley, Cheney, Rummy… the list goes on and on… all the way to George W. Bush!!!

The GOP is scum. The Dems are mostly scum, almost completely spineless, and have little to no platform.

The Dems SHOULD be pushing alternative energy more, finding ways to relieve the energy crisis, promising to be bipartisan on social issues instead of Bush’s stubborn one track views, and pushi away from the “emotional” issues that aren’t really debatable.

As for New Orleans corruption I’d say this is an improvement. It has been the most corrupt government in the U.S. for a long time. Why do you think the Katrina thing was so bad? For once there was a problem that money changing hands could not fix. Don’t think for a second that a healthy chuck of this Katrina Aid isn’t landing in some swiss bank account right now.
Most New Orleanians have come to accept the corruption in the city; besides it’s pretty damn handy when you need to get a speeding ticket fixed.

I think differently than most.
Anyway, I voted Republican because they promised term limits, reduced spending, less regulation (MORE FREEDOM), a return to less government. They didn’t do as they promised, choosing instead to out-Dem the Dems. They were afraid they’d lose votes if they DID WHAT THEY WERE HIRED FOR! So, include stupid along with spineless, the bastard scum.

I tell you, they’re setting the table for someone to come along who appears to be moral and strong, but yet is evil (just like Hitler).

The GOP has not run on a minimal Gov platform at all. A ban on Gay marriage? Limiting stem-cell research? Flag burning amendment? Pro-life? These are limits. And these are the primary issues of the GOP (sadly enough, the economy and the enviroment are little talked about by the GOP anymore).

The GOP ran a platform that was based on spend-without-tax. They didn’t spend because they were “afraid” of the dems, they spent because this generation of republicans is fiscally irresponsible, and cares more about their careers than this country (same goes to the Dems).

The Dems are concerned, but unwilling to push any important issues in fear of a loss in populairty or votes. I also disagree with many of their limits.

The dems expand Gov to create social reforms. The GOP expands it for religious purposes. They both limit freedom.

Fuck it, if Barak doesn’t run in 08, I’m voting libertarian.

Welcome to the discussion? Anything else intellectually stimulating you’d like to add?

I wish they’d charge the guy with something so you could stop spouting off about this… over and over again.

It won’t matter. Even if he is cleared of any wrongdoing, he will still spout off about it. When he decides you are guilty, it doesn’t matter what the evidence or a jury says.

I hope that he is found guilty of something so Psycho can feel good about himself. He needs that type of affirmation in his life. His life is pretty hard for him. Imagine being him, trying to post on here between thorazine doses, its hard for him to go on. Just the thought that he can express his psychosis on internet boards keeps him going.

LOL! I’m making fun of the stupid voters, who put a guy like this into office despite being filmed by the FBI taking bribes. If I’m insane, Al, then I’m more sane than the 57% of voters who put this scumbag into Congress.

Just curious, Al — does ripping on these ignorant voters, most of whom are black, make me a racist, in your opinion? Since you seem to know so much about me…

How many times do I need to say that calling you a racist is the wrong thing to call you? I’ve said it on several threads, but yet, you seem stuck on it for some reason. I wonder why?

Also, what does that have to do with you making people guilty before all the evidence is in and the person has their day in court? I can tell you, absolutely nothing. Which is another reason why I call you level of insane that hasn’t been named yet.

I’m curious, did you do the same thing to Tom Delay? He’s been accused, but curiously you’ve never said a damn thing about him. How about the fact that the current Republican House Ethics Committee has given Mark Foley a slap on the wrist and will allow him to keep his government-funded pension (That comes out of your taxes as well as everyone else’s). You are strangely silent on that as well.

Your blind hatred and fear, coupled with your fanaticism and tenuous hold on reality is a dangerous combination.

You just hit the nail on the head. Tom DeLay got re-elected multiple times, while he was under investigation. Jefferson has not been charged or indicted yet, whereas DeLay has been. The only thing that got DeLay to step down was when prosecutors got his top aide to talk. Up until then DeL:ay said he’d fight the charges.

The election may have turned out differently if New Orleans wasn’t in shambles (16% voter turnout this election). And if the FBI would have indicted Jefferson already this wouldn’t be an issue (they’ve been dragging this thing out for at least a year).

But local voters are free to elect whoever they want… that’s the “Free Market” in action. Jefferson must be perceived as doing a good job for the local constituents, the same way that Tom DeLay managed to get reelected multiple times, despite a history of ethics violations.

Has Tom Delay been filmed taking bribes? Did they find $90,000 in his freezer?

Is sending gay text to a male page equivalent to taking bribes, making land deals, selling your federal judgeship to the highest bidder (as even the Dems said)?

C’mon Al. Guys like you are giving fodder to REAL RACISTS, who think black people won’t convict a black person of ANYTHING, no matter what the evidence.

How many grand juries did the asshole prosecuter have to call, before he found one that agreed that there was enough evidence to indict Delay? Was it 5 or 6? Wonder why…?

Excuse me, DeLay been charged, right? The rest of what you said is just crap. When Jefferson is charged, I will agree with you. Until then, I would like to actually let the system do its job, unlike you.

Looks like someone is making excuses as usual. You wouldn’t question how many grand juries were needed if it was someone you didn’t agree with, so why are you doing it now?

And those who engage in their uses
Are seldom capable of anything else.”

Of course he is. Didn’t you know? Republican, white, heterosexual, Christian, American-born males are always innocent in HH’s world. Everybody outside of that is automatically guilty.
