Many of us would like to know the answer to that one, loppar…
I just read an interesting article claiming that Kim is tired of taking orders from Xi. He already eliminated two of his most pro-Beijing relatives. So maybe what is going on is Kim has solidified his position at home and built the nukes to negotiate from a position of strength, and now he wants to play China and America off against each other the way lots of other Asian nations do. He will try to get economic aid and pollution clean up assistance. Of course, when I think about the endless mess of NK, I think any country that tries to buy his loyalty will end up with buyer’s remorse pretty quick.

Something else that I’ve found that many Trump Fan-Boys (and probably Trump himself) don’ t realize…
Any meeting like this is merely (at BEST)…to set a framework for the actual long, tedious, and pain-staking job of working out the actual details of some type of Treaty.
Trump has already said that “the” important thing will be “attitude”. (…and saying “No Nukes, Rocket Man, or I’m going home” is not setting a framework).
I do agree with Trump (in the famous words of Gomer Pyle, "Surprise, surprise, surprise!!!); that if there is nothing “substantive” from Kim; that sanctions should not be lifted); but my fear is that Trump is looking for more of a “See! I got TOUGH with Rocket Man; like no other President in HISTORY!” win than he is with setting a well thought-out out framework for the Diplomats and Experts to work from.
We’ll see.
I actually find it weird that the media no longer appears to be making a big deal of the fact that N. Korea possesses the (theoretical) ability to strike the U.S.
N. Korea won. It has achieved its nuclear ambition. The situation is dramatically different now.

OR… (which prompted my initial post) that Xi Jinping is hardly ever mentioned; or that it was his influence (not Trump’s “toughness”) that has led to Kim’s sudden “change of Heart”.
In fact…his glaring absence from any and all “Summit” discussion is mind-boggling…
(Maybe he (Xi) likes it that way…?)
I recall, but had we attacked Beirut, who also had Americans and United Nations members hostage, the entire landscape of the Middle East today might have looked differently. Hezbollah, as we know it today, could have been destroyed in it’s infancy. Possibly there would be no Hamas…but that’s another thread.
I am not on social media of any kind. Nor have any plans to do so. The more I hear about it, the less I want anything to do with it.
I don’t deny that there are contradictory stories. But I don’t simultaneously dismiss the original story. Maybe it’s in the middle. But until we know the absolute truth, I will not just go for the cntradiction.
I remember very well, the students frying the flag and asking for help. I saw it live. If there is another story that is valid I will accept it.

That would be a LOT easier if I wasn’t surrounded on a daily basis by Trump Minions; who “study” the issues involved by listening to Hannity and Fox; and who if President Obama did and said a fraction of what Trump says and does…except directed it at others on “the other side”; would have personally flown to Washington and hung him from the Lincoln Memorial…
And one other thing to add to the list…“Hate the man…but respect the Office???”
