New guy here again,on your chest routine do you ever do board press’s?
If you try them use 3 to 4 boards and use 50lbs more than what your regular bench is for 3x5 reps. I also lift in NASA and AAU federations. I lift in the 242lb class and have totaled a 1052 total in the push/pull meets.
I train with a guy named David Scott and he is 48 yrs old and he pulls 650lbs and benches 424lbs and has squatted 705lbs. We both are going to the NASA Nationals in Jan in OKC,OK 2007.
We both hope to hit in the high 1700’s or hope to hit 1800lbs. Just because we are older doesn’t mean we are dead yet!! HA, HA,HA!!! BEST OF LUCK TO YOU IN YOUR UPCOMING MEET!!!
Bryan, Good Luck to you and your partner David. Say ‘hi’ to Rich Peters for me in OKC. I used to compete in his regionals & went to several of his Nats, including OKC in the early 90’s.
To answer your question, I do not do baord presses per se. I BP in a power rack and sometimes set the pins at various distances above my chest.
When I do these, I usually take anywhere from 1-4 fingers narrower grip than my normal BP grip. I don’t do them on a regular basis though, only when I feel I need the extra Triceps work.
After my injury/surgery, I BP’ed in rack bringing bar to rest on pins just above chest. I only take the pins away when I am 6-8 weeks out from a contest and have to get used to bringing bar to my chest. I use the pins as a crutch since I train alone…just to be safe in case something lets go.
I think the board presses must be working for you - keep up the good work and knock’em dead in OKC.
From your earlier post, I do box squats once in awhile, but I also do regular squats with pauses in bottom, front squats, and overhead squats. I like the variety and I even change my stance width whenever I feel like it. I don’t feel locked into one particular training routine and maybe that’s why my squat sucks of late.

Ill keep my fingers & toes crossed for you so you get off to a good start!!!
First, thanks for the thread. And thanks for your support. I should a of worked on this a long time ago. The ease that I can do over 600 in the rack, I should be able to do over 500 from the floor with the same ease. Have a great weekend and it’s always great gear from you.
How is everbody doing?Worked 75 hours this week and have not trained!I got back in from work and took a nap.I’m going to the gym now.Talk with you later.
Jimmy,
How was the workout after a week’s layoff? I find sometimes I have the most awesome workouts when that happens; I hope you did also.
I unloaded/loaded a 40x8 trailer yesterday. My other 100 lb plates were buried in there, along with my hydraulic squat racks, 16 sheets of 3/4 plywood for platforms(if i ever run a contest again), 300+ lbs of assorted bumper plates, plus a whole shit-load of junk. 4 file cabinets worth of articles and pics and routines I’ve ‘collected’ over the years, blah, blah, blah. Took from 9am to 3pm. My back and hamstring tendons were sore but I thought I would be OK to lift this morning…
My back was talking to me the entire workout…when I put the belt on it kept talking but now in a whisper. My hamstring tendons cried out as soon as the wraps went on and never stopped complaining, even after the workout was done. The Walkout sucked! I couldn’t get the bar off the pins initially, when I finally re-set and got them off, then I didn’t have the strength, coordination, & HEART to walk back and set up.
I dragged my feet and had to readjust several times until the stance width was kinda near my normal stance. Then I usually unlock/re-lock my knees and bounce the bar around on my back a bit and that finally broke the camel’s back - WORKOUT OVER!!!
When I did my max attempts in the garage for the NATS which I couldn’t attend, when I put the suit on with straps up, I couldn’t breathe. Next week I will start squatting with suit and straps up to try and get used to feeling - I’ll have 4 heavy workouts before the PA contest Dec 9/10 to get used to it this time. I will try to rest today - my kids want to go to BORDER’s to get some books, then I will attempt a BP workout after they leave for NY. I’ll keep you posted on how that goes…I’m not overly optimistic as I write this…
I really enjoy hearing from you guys…it makes it kinda worthwile to know others have gone through this and will make light of it at my expense.

When I got to the gym last night it was closed for basketball. They have a full court gym next door and host league play.I visited a couple friends and came home to a house full of kids.I’m blessed what a life.
Today,I did all three lifts for triples. My son “Big Red”-Mikey was with me and he trained bench as well.
Squat-1x8x135-1x5x225-1x3x315-1x3x405-1x3x455
Bench-1x8x95-1x8x135-1x5x165-1x3x195-1x3x215-Pause reps
Big Red-1x8x95-1x3x135-1x5x115-1x8x100
Deadlift-1x5x225-1x3x315-1x3x405
QT, I felt great!Lots more in the tank in all three lifts.I’m still in conventional style daedlifting. My hamstring feels good and there is no longer any tightness.I will consider going back to sumo next week.Looks like you been having fun too!
Nice to here from Barry and see some Master lifters visit your thread. This weeks work schedule is just as busy.Badda Bing!Everyone have a great week and stay safe.TRAIN HARD! Jimmy T
first off, jimmy, really impressed with that 455x3 squat! solid. where you in full gear, raw, or what?
second, i will concur with what Barry and Art said, sometimes a week layoff can do you good, it seems as i have gotten older, i can maintain and even gain with less frequent training.
I want to run something by you…I have looked through my training log and I have come to the realization that I did not “gain” much strength over the last month or so training for this contest. I think I maintained what was already there and not much more. Not that it depressed me, BUT, I am concerned about it. It’s making me think I need to re-evaluate my training methods/programs because what has seemingly worked in the past, now shows minimal gain for the time and effort put forth. I do know that because of my shoulder injury/surgery I still have a significant strength deficit compared to my ‘good’ shoulder. My surgeon thought I would never get back to where I am presently because of the extensive surgery and because GORE-TEX is holding me together instead of strong muscles/tendons and ligaments. Maybe the limitations placed on me by the repair and me not getting the deficits corrected by now(2+ years post surgery) are what are limiting my progress, or, lack of it???
Let me give you examples - I still can not hold a barbell on or near my collarbone to military or stand press, BUT, I can do behind the neck presses. Prior to surgery(in my late 40’s), I could do strict behind the neck presses for 1-3 reps with 205-225, push presses/jerks for 1-3 reps with 250-295. Now my strict behind the neck press is 170-180 for a single on a good day! When I use DB’s - I can press with good form 125 for 8-10 reps with my R but barely manage 1/2 that weight for several reps with my L at present. Not only do I see a lack of strength in that lift but when the weight gets heavier, I’m in more pain so I usually quit at that point.
In the Squat and BP I have seen little strength gain, as well. The only lift I seem to make some strength gain in is the DL, power/hang cleans, and hang/power snatches, probably because I suck at them and just by practicing a bit makes my form better so I can lift slightly heavier weights on succeeding workouts.
The chain drag has gotten easier for me backwards, but I still struggle forwards.
My cardio seems OK - I still hang in there with the young kids and younger staff when I play Basketball/Football with them in Phys. Ed class daily. My annual physicals keep amazing my MD; my blood work, BP, resting HR, etc. are all excellent.
WHAT WOULD YOU ALL SUGGEST I TRY??? I still think I’m capable of gaining strength, I crave it, I’m just not executing well enough to achieve it. Please, tell me what you HONESTLY think. I will be anxiously awaiting any and all replies. Till next time, train hard and safe!

Deadlift
135x8
(100’s) - 245x5; 335x3; 425x2; 515x1; 545x1; 495x3
Getting harder to hit the single & even harder to hit the triple after a hard single!!! I may have only one more week of hitting the top single, then I will just work up to adding 5 lbs a week to the triple which will now be the top set. Next week might look like - 135x6; 245x4; 335x2; 425x1; 500x3
QT, I feel for you on the shoulder. Not to sound goofy, can you do dips or is that a no no? Going to be in TX from 12/28-1/3(Lubbock) Week 2 baby plates tomorrow. Keep thinking low ass, high chest. I’m an old baseballer let me give the shoulder some thought. Train hard and all have a good weekend.

Thanks Barry. I can do dips(one of my favorite exercises. My dip bars are outside, so if it’s too cold or wet, they are kinda off-limits to me. I just don’t see myself GAINING strength, just maintaining what I have at this point in time.
