PL Training for Master's Nats

QT,
That is a interesting training system. The percentage lifting has worked for me in the past.I did that on my last deadlift workout.Keep me posted on your progress.
The heavy walk outs and set ups are great. In my opinion and experience the set up is crucial to a max attempt.I go over this set up thing and visualize and practice on every set.I work the bar on my back and set it in it’s groove,my hands are tight on the bar and my back is super tight.I get up under the bar and stand up with it,my feet close together and tighten my whole body.My back out is three some times four steps depending on the weight. This is where you have to stick the set up to set the lift up.

Once in position I take a big breath nod and begin my drop in a cotrolled speed and stay very tight to execute my drive in the hole and drive back up tight and fast.I begin my focus and intensity mounts as I wrap my knees and pull my straps and tighten my belt.I remain focused and disciplined while approaching the bar and enter the zone.Just talking about it gets me going brother.I have all the faith in your training intensity that you will prevail in the squat.Brother, consistancy pays off and repitition fine tunes.TRAIN HARD! Jimmy T

Jimmy,
I love your description of the visualization!!! It made my hairs stand up reading it…in fact, that felt so good I re-read it to see if it would happen again and it did!
My kids have been with me since Friday, so I have had to sneak in my workouts. I miised last week’s DL workout, so I did it this morning early before anyone got up. The way the workout went, I was still asleep on my feet - it was torture. My lower back hadn’t recovered from the last squat workout + restless night’s sleep so here goes…
10/09/06 - Monday
Deadlift
135x8; 225x5; 315x3; 405x2; 475x1; 520x1; 470x3…the 520 was slow but it went; the 470 made my body shake on all 3 reps - no hitching, just quivering of muscles
Rack pulls from just below knee
315x3; 405x2; 495x1 I was shot so I didn’t go heavier
Chain drag only backwards - 30 minutes
Roman chair sit-ups - 3 sets x 20 reps

My friend is Jon Rockholt in Lubbock. He’s just getting back to the gym. I’m in Missouri. My hand is still tender. My friends and family think I’m nuts. Why would a 51 year old lift 700 in the rack? Cause he can! I’m going to try and get to Texas soon. Maybe we could throw some iron. I lived in Houston for 5 years, best titty bars on earth. Train hard.
Barry

QT,
Awesome deadlift!I’m very impressed by your lifting.Keep at it hard brother.
Barry,
When you get ready to travel just pm me and we will train.I know of many great powerlifting gyms in Texas.Keep those youngsters on their toes!

Jimmy,
Thanks for your encouragement…of late, my squat sucks!!! I am trying to go back to squatting twice/week to see if I can make it come around a bit. Squatting once/week has gotten me progressively weaker.

In the past, on my light day i worked singles almost to failure; on my heavy day I picked a weight percentagewise of that near max single and did mutiple sets of reps with it. So if on light day I did 550x1 on my heavy day I would take 80-85% for reps for maybe 2-3 sets if I had enough stamina.

The next week I would try for a higher single(but still sub-max) and do maybe 90-95% for 2-3 reps x 2 sets if possible. The next week I would try for a higher single but now drop on the heavy day to 65-70% x 5-8 reps x hopefully 2-3 sets.

On my heavy day after the single, I would load the bar higher from week to week with a heavy weight for 1 walkout which I took of pins, walked back set up, and held weight for 5-10 secs while slightly bouncing the weight by unlocking and locking my knees. I’m gonna try something like this up to the contest in Dec.

10/07/06 - Saturday
Squat - raw and paused in bottom for 1-2 seconds
45x10x2; 135x8; 185x5; 225x3; 275x2; 315x1; 350x3x3(Harder than I thought it would be)
BP - every rep in workout paused
45x6x2; 135x6; 185x3; 225x1; 260x4x2
CG BP off pins with pauses 1-2 secs
225x5; 275x3; 305x2x2
that looks interesting Art. i may give that a spin or a variation of it sometime itn the future.

Jimmy,
Be careful!!! I hope you are able to compensate by going conventional and train around the injury somewhat.
Speedy recovery!
Art
what QT said! i have on more thatn one occassion switched to conventional style to train around a glute injury, and strained an inner thigh/groin muscle. seems to be tha same injury every time too.

Shitty workout last night!!! Got home from second job at 9:15 tired & with a toothache but gave it go…
10/11/06 - Wednesday
Press Behind the Neck
45x12x2; 70x10; 95x8; 120x6; 135x4; 160x2 and then failed twice at 190x0x2. Even tried a slight push press motion but it wouldn’t clear my head. Backed off 50lbs and did 140x8 with every rep paused on shoulders and the last two reps were extremely hard! I quit after that, took a shower and 3 aspirin and went to bed

That’s why we really appreciate the good days when it clicks. Eat right and the next workout go at it like an animal. I’m kind wacked it’s DL day and I can’t wait to go. Good luck on the next workout.

boy you said a mouthfull there. those “good days” come so rare as we get older, when i am feeling good, i tend to work extra hard that day, cuz i dont know when the next one will be, lol

Good to hear from everyone.TRAIN HARD! Jimmy T

You guys are right on the money regarding those good days. When I’m having one, like HT, I do a little extra in some way to try and take advantage of the extra work. All day at work today I was thinking about my workout…whether I’d do it right after school or wait till 9:00 or so and do it then.

I went to the chiropractor right from school, got adjusted and decided to f__k up the adjustment by DLing again. Here goes…
10/13/06 - Friday the 13th
Deadlift
135x8; 225x5; 315x3; 405x2; 495x1; 525x1; 475x3.

The workout was kinda easy; I have more in the tank and I’m gonna need it in the next 4-5 weeks. I’m still gonna jump the top DL single by 5 lbs each week then drop 50 lbs for a triple. I think eventually by the 5th week I will probably fail at the top single but hope to still nail the triple.

After that I will not take anymore singles just jump the triple weight 5 lbs each week till the contest. My sig. other still thinks I might have a shot at near-600 again sometime in 2007 if I don’t stop training hard after the contest in Dec. My all time contest best at 198 was 633 in the early 90’s. I’ve done 600 at 181 in the early 90’s as well.

Do you think at 51 based on the weight and reps I’m doing now, that a close to 600 DL is possible??? I’m not sure…I think I’ll tap out at 550-575, but time will tell. HT, your workouts are looking like you are feeling better - keep it up. Jimmy, you are still on a roll so keeping rolling! Yours in IRON,
Art

QT,
I like the idea of moving up 5lbs. per week on the single and 50 back on the triple. You will make it to 600lbs.Based on your training and the fact you hit it early in your lifting makes it just a matter of training time. This is your lift brother and the time has come to challenge the bar!It is your focus and determination that I feel will prevail.

It’s that training mentality that we speak about all the time.Back from the doc and back in the gym.I dig reading your posts. Thanks for setting me up for my bench day!If you are hitting it like that, then I need to bring it too!A safe and happy weekend to everyone.TRAIN HARD! Jimmy T

The hamstring feels good and my shoulder is pain free. The training was strong and my form and execution was my focus.Work is very busy and I will soon be traveling again.I need to find the balance in my training between the two.I’m considering training squats and deadlifts on the same day again. What do you guys think? My time will be limited for now.One week heavy squat and light deadlifts and flip it the next week, with a good bench day.TRAIN HARD! Jimmy T

Jimmy,
I trained Squats & DL’s on the same day - have to do it the same day in a contest. I did no assistance work - just SQ & DL to minimize wear & tear on body. I also took about 15 minutes rest between the two and took longer rest bet sets as needed. It got to the point where my squat poundages were keeping me from DL high due to technique/form problems. In general, I noticed my form wasn’t what it should be as the sq and DL got heavier week-to-week. But that should not deter you - You’ll get out of it what you put into it, so, go for it!

Betty, my significant other, took video of my last warm-up 495x1 from side, 530x1 from rear, and 480x3 from the side. It is the first time I’ve used video to check out my form and I saw some things that I could do better…if I get a chance will post the video to my profile after dinner for your viewing pleasure and more importantly, comments, criticisms, & suggestions. Hope all is well Jimmy & HT.
