Pittsburgh Gym

Does anyone know of a gym in Pittsburgh that promotes more powerlifting, or more Olympic lifting styles?

Trap bars? Reverse Hyper? Squatting Platforms?

More than one person squatting and im not the only person that dealifts?

I live in the South Hills if that matters?

I have no idea, but I’m going to Pitt next year, so I hope there is a decent gym around.

Try Pittsburgh Barbell. I’m on the road too much to go there right now, but they have a great group of lifters. Not too far from the South Hills either.

Never been there but there was some stuff in Powerlifting USA about Steel City Barbell in pittsburgh. I think it’s fairly new.

I have never been to Pittsburgh Barbell club, but a friend of mine worked out there and enjoyed it.

Another place that is supposed to be good is Umberger Performance in Robinson.

Neither is technically in the South Hills, but close enough that they might be doable for you.

Other than those 2, all I know of in the South Hills are an endless amount of LA Fitness/Fitness 19 type of chains.

I have been to Umbergers place and its super legit, but there are always a lot of kids in there. Its not really the type of environment to heavy lifting. Its legit and his equipment is nice clean and new but also expensive.

I would travel if necessary.

I have been the place in bridgeville and its cool, but they only meet a few days a week. I couldnt just show up and lift.

I think i might just join a LA fitness do curls in the squat racks and check out all the yinzers

If you don’t mind driving through the city, I have heard Celli’s in Lawrenceville is a good powerlifting gym. It probably wouldn’t be to bad of a drive as long as it wasn’t rush hour.

I also live in the south hills of pittsburgh. Two places that i have been to are AmeriFit in Greentree (http://enter.afitspa.com/10.html) and extreme fitness 2 in greentree (http://extremepittsburgh.com/cont.php)

Amerifit is much more hardcore. They have a ton of weight, dead lift platforms, heavy dumbbells, kettlebells, suspension training apparatus, etc. But i dont lift there because they have so much stuff that it gets very crowded, and it is hard to get a good lift in. There also can be large groups, such as wrestling teams, training there and it is hard to get a good flow there with a bunch of kids dicking around. But depending on your schedule, it could be a good option to avoid traveling into the city.

Due to my schedule, i lift at Extreme Fitness 2 in Greentree/Scott township. Since i am a “9 to 5’er” it is more convenient to use this gym as my home base. It is pretty desolate after 6-6:30 pm. They have serviceable equipment. And it is a okay environment to work in. They do not have the best benches or power racks, and do not have a reverse hyper (yet), but they do have a lot of machines and a lot of hammer strength equipment. Overall, it is like i said before: serviceable.

Post back if you find anything good in this area.

Hey, I lift at AmeriFit! When is the last time you were there? I know another guy from this site who lifts there as well. I never find it too crowded when I go and I usually go anywhere from 1:00 to 5:00pm. I usually never have to wait on any of the 2 squat rack/deadlift areas. They also got a nice open room you can use for warming up, ploymetrics, etc.

I wish i could go at that time. i get stuck going around 6-6:30 and there is a lot going on at that time. I really do like the place, its just tough to get everything done. Im def not knocking the place.

This is where I train. Best gym I’ve ever trained at.

World Class in Coraopolis, near the airport, is a good place. Lots of serious lifters there. One of their guys hosts an annual push-pull contest called Monster Bench Press/Deadlift.

Small place, though, no lifting platform, but friendly people.

I go to extreme fitness like right up the road. I get weird looks deadlifting. I am officially the only one I have ever seen conventionally deadlift.

PShannon, to clear things up, I lift at Extreme Fitness II in Greentree. I lift in the evenings, usually getting to the gym around 6 or 7. I also have run 5x3x1, and have a lot of experience with it. I bought the original book and 5x3x1 for Powerlifitng, and highly recommend it. I also deadlift weekly, usually always on Tuesday or Wednesday evenings, depending on how my splits fall.

I was going to recommend Celli’s as well but he beat me to it. Celli’s is legit.
