Picking A Modern Muscle Car

I’ve made two responses to Al’s posts, both contained only the single word “Owned”, and I thought both had an obviously sarcastic and humorous tone (in fact JeffR picked up on that). Carrying his water?
you’re using JeffR as an example?
Most of the time those of us “on his side” don’t know what he’s talking about!!!

A quick search on cars.com turns up plenty of low mileage 2002 Z06’s for 30k.

Each one is unique, and some lack any substance, like the new mustang, it’s a empty shell of a once great car who’s time has passed, it’s like trying to rekindle an old relationship only to realise it won’t work and is best left in the past.

The new corvette (c6) is the first time in a long time that I’m finally Impressed by an American sports car. It’s the car i always knew the USA could make but scratched my head as to why it didn’t. So now it’s here and a viable option. The C5 is a great chioce as well. BMW brings a different feel to the table and is an excellent drivers car, I loved driving them. With cars it’s not just all about HP. It’s the balance, weight, chasis stifness, weight transfer charasteristics, powerband, etc.
On a final note I just want to say why i think American cars like ford suck in generall.
Cheap metals used in construction of body, and meachanics.
Cheap paint quality.
Interior plastics are way cheap and crude.
The engineering is VERY subpar compared to imports but interestingly the Price is in a very similar range. Go figure pay the same or more and get less is the motto of domestics, but they hide it well with glitter and flash. Don’t plan to keep a ford for more then 5 years and expect it to look, drive new.

so i guess you’ve driven the mustang gt from your comments about it being an empty shell for that amount of money. I have not, but i must say the gt looks great, the engine is great, i don’t like the retro dash, and the big steering wheel. Can you tell me of any car in that price class that you think can compete with the Mustang GT, i can think of some.

Also i don’t agree with you on your price quotes: american cars usually are cheapest in their class followed by japanese cars and then german cars. you pay what you get for and if you want the greater technology you need to pay up for it.

Ford and GM need to make cheap cars to counter act their truck sales because of a governmnet rule on fuel economy which states that the averge amount of fuel economy per car sold has to be at a given level so for every truck sold a certain amount of small cheap cars with good fuel economy have to be sold. Now i realize that competing by using price levels does not make good production vehicles but the rest of the american public does not seem to mind.

you have to admit that american cars are usually cheaper to maintain then technology full foreign cars or atleast that’s how it used to be considering now they are pumping more technology into domestic cars. GM and Ford own other car companies like mazda, jaguar, opel, saab so if you want to compare expensive techology filled foreign cars you can look at those.

just for reference, my family owns a nissan sentra and altima, and my girlfriend owns an altima so it’s not like we are anti-foreign. laters pk

I’ll take my 350Z over any of those cars any day. It’s a much more competant car at the limits of handling, and generally better balanced. If you want a true “muscle car”, it probably doesn’t fit. It’s more power with finesse. But it’s not a wussie car by any stretch, and I’ll take that finesse when drifting around a 35-mph ramp at 85, any day.

Every car I’ve owned up to this point has been a Nissan, so I like them quite a bit, they’ve been good to me and the 350Z is a beautiful car. My only problem is that it is a pure 2 seater. But for that, it would be under serious consideration.

If you like the 350z but dislike the fact that it is a 2 seater then consider the new 6 speed Infiniti G35. Trust me, you will not go wrong with it.

i like the infiniti but damn that back seat is small, it can only fit really small children. it has about the same dimensions as the mustang in terms or leg/hip room.

i am tempted to say that i would pay up and get the infiniti over the mustang but then the GTO comes to mind and i say no.

If you end up putting that turbo on the 350Z that alone for NISMO is 4,300 and l dont think that includes intercooler and gets an advertised 430hp so add that cost on top of the car 27-32G and your still spending more money then a 01-02 Zo6 and you will still be getting smoked. Then add the cost of your blown up tranny and clutch later because of the added power. Poor choice stick with americas best Zo6
A stock Z06 will not smoke a 350Z with a super/turbocharger. The car already handles about as well, although it needs wider tires just for the raw contact patch. The cars weigh about the same. The 350Z engine already has a torque curve flat as a table. Add a blower and the Z is going to keep up with the vette just fine.

The stock clutch on the Z is quite heavy. You’re not going to break it with that much HP. It’s not a Honda. That’s ggod and bad: tough clutch, but not as light and “flickable”.

A blown Z would be a very potent competitor for a Z06.

That’s not to trash the Z06. As I said, it’s a beast. An amazing piece of engineering. It’s just unfortunate that besides the amazing engine and suspension, the rest of it’s just a Chevy, with the legendary quality issues.

That last part was one of two reasons I have a Z parked in my driveway rather than a Z06. The other was that I got such a great car and spent $15K less.

It’s amazing how out of hand this thread has gotten. I will stay out of it though, as I am a fairly opinionated car enthusiast as well.

Excuse me but have you seen the thread that asks which muscle cars you would pick? I think it was between a Camaro, Mustang and the Javelin or something…

I don’t know anymore…Maybe I’m on the wrong site.

Im not going to say that it has more room than the Mustang but I have ridden in the back of my G35 and I am 6’1 and 215lbs without much of a problem. The worst part is getting out. I wouldnt suggest any long road trips though. Although I may be biased because I have one. It drives like a dream and it looks just as good.

Oh, grow a pair. People are conversing about closely related car topics. Threads evolve, especially by the fourth page.

My answer: I wouldn’t buy any of the three originally mentioned cars.

Metro-sexuals are naturally scared of MUSCLE - whether of the protein type, or automotive type.

Buick might come back with the Grand National:

Let’s all get real here.

There is no other option. While my family has never owned a car that wasn’t German made (because, there is No Substitute), my father passed up on getting a viper this year so he could get the first crack at the Shelby Mustang. While my “family” has never owned anything american muscle, my father before he was married has, and I can’t even count the number of times he’s told me stories about his Shelby back in the day. If Shelby stays true to its heritage much the same way to Ford did, the 2006 Shelby will simply be amazing. I cannot wait to drive this thing.

Rainjack is right, this car is worth saving for. Live a year of no car payments, save up as much money as you can possibley afford, trade in that Nissan, and I bet you could make this thing affordable. It will be well worth it.

Psshhh, the M3 and M5 OWN. Someday…

Like I said, german made all the way… personally I’m a fan of Stuttgart and their fine fine automobiles, but of course I’m going to be partial to my baby.

I have to go with the Dodge Charger…chick magnet!

Toyota Supra…

Its in a league of its own (in a way). Put about 2k of parts into it and it will have about 500hp to the flywheel. Also, its not “Hello, I’m Mr. Businessman” and its not, “Hello, I’m Fonzy”

Now it makes perfect sense RJ. I wouldn’t have guessed with all your tough talk you were a metro. You’re taken by the Mustang GT because it lets you pretend you’re in a muscle car without having to deal with all that scary MUSCLE. Fair enough.

I might have to scoop up one of these '02 Z06s. If I do, let me apologize in advance if I blow by your GT on the road and my wake shakes your latte out of your cupholder and gets your sandals all wet.

Exactly. Through this entire thread the GNX has been on the back of my mind. One of my all time favorites; that car just looks mean.

This new one kinda looks like a cavalier though, doesn’t it?

But it is, “Hello, I’m a marketing major at UC-Riverside”. Yarr.

Am I the only one that thinks a big, powerful engine surrounded by a car that sucks is somewhat one-dimensional?
