Bartl,
Just curious man, given your atheltic background, is this your first venture into endurance sports? [/quote]

Actually it is. I have always played sports where the pace is fast for short periods of time, even baseball. I grew up with my life revolving around what sport was coming up next, not what season we were in for weather.

Fall = football
Winter = hockey, snowboarding, basketball
spring = baseball
summer = golf

that it was my life was life from about 4-5 till I left high school.

Endurance sports have always been weird to me. Thinking that only skinny people could do them. Part of my motivation for wanting to do one, is to prove to myself that bigger, more muscular people can do them and do them well.

I’m there with ya Bart. I’m about 5’7" and when I did my first Tri I was at about 205 lbs. I completed it just fine. I did one the next year and improved on my time which is the point. I’m about 185 lbs. now but I haven’t done a Tri in a couple of years. You’ll have a good time though.

Practice your transitions. Going from the water to putting bike shoes or whatever on can be tricky since you’re wet. Also, whatever you plan to bike in, wear it in the water. On my first Tri I tried to throw on an Under Armor type shirt after comign out of the water. Hahahah… huge mistake.

On my second tri, I just wore Triathlon shorts throughout the entire race and that was it. My time improved greatly in the transition. I also, put baby powder in my shoes so they’d slip on easier and take the moisture away from my feet. I also took the sole inserts out of my shoes and didn’t wear any socks. I also had the sinch down laces. I probably wouldn’t recommend not wearing sock on the run though. I had some mad blisters after that.

So, think of all the little tricks you can in the transition area.

Also, I noticed you were heading to Costa Mesa. Love that area. I’ve been there for several classes myself and absolutely love it every time I go. Of coarse I spend most of my time in Newport and Huntington Beach. Enjoy

Hi Bartl,

I just wanted to say congrats on the amazing progress you’re looking very good! And you’re right shaved head does equal sex appeal (at least in your case and in CT’s)!

I totally understand what you mean about being overweight and still being able to kick ass at sports. My sophomore year of high school (age 15) I made the varsity water polo and varsity swim team (500 fly) when I weighed in at 210 lbs! I can’t help but imagine how good I could have been if I was at a lean weight!

Keep up the good work! I’m really happy for you!

Bart -

Jennjenn is in Cali… you’re in Cali… ummmm… your move!

Hey Bartl, I noticed diet-wise you are on a plan similar to novagreg’s with alternating protein/veggies and protein/fat days. How are you liking that eating plan? Is it leaving you hungry at the end of certain days, or are you used to it by now? It’s obviously working for you, keep it up man!

“Part of my motivation for wanting to do one, is to prove to myself that bigger, more muscular people can do them and do them well.”

In an effort to encourage bigger guys to do endurance events, they now have a Clydesdale division for guys >200 and an Athena division for ladies >150 (I think it’s 150).

BTW - Please tell CT that his run program rocks. Tried to do a 1:30/3:30 run/walk split and that was tough. Did it on the treadmill but cranked up the incline for the walk portion and also grabbed some 5 lbs. weights and pumped my arms which kept the intensity up so it wasn’t just a leisurely stroll.

I will work on all of that, thanks Hog. One question for you. Last year when I went and watching this triathlon I saw people putting deodorant all around their necks before they started. Why is that?

I like the baby powder idea and was planning on going without shoes during the bike anyways.

Jennjenn…where to start. First, thank you for the compliment. It definitely helps when good a looking woman gives you a compliment like that.

Next, anything else I can do to increase my sex appeal for you, you just let me know and it will be done.

My man hoglover is right…we are both in California. You Nor-cal or So-cal?

I believe our diets are both pretty much the same in all aspects. I like the eating plan but was hoping to change it up when we changed the training session. I’m getting kind of bored with it.

I have been noticing that I am getting hungry a lot these last couple days and that I have been staring at the clock waiting until I can eat.

I know its working and I am not second guessing anything Thibs has me doing.

I am noticing that I have been getting some weird cravings again. This time its Brie cheese and summer sausage. go figure, not quite sure how that fits into the diet.

Three words: witness protection program

It’s not deodorant. It’s lubrication to prevent the wetsuit from chafing your neck when you turn to breath. It was probably bodyglide:

haha… just keep up the good work and the sex appeal will follow.

I’m from LA but, I’m studying at a university in Switzerland. I get really jealous and homesick when you talk about sunshine and 70 degree weather in the middle of winter… I used to take that for granted!

He’s not showing off… he’s one week ahead of you. Don’t worry though, you’ll get up to 7 minutes running, 1 minute jogging soon enough.

It wasn’t that…it was full on Degree antiperspirant deodorant.

Ahhh studying abroad. I remember when I studied in France for 6 weeks, then played in Europe for another 6 weeks. Amsterdam, Italy, Germany, Bulgaria and of course Switzerland, which was actually my favorite country. So beautiful there. Reminded me of Washington but on a much bigger scale regarding the mountains.

If you get a chance, make sure you hit up Interloken. That place rules.

“About that, serious runners use petroleum jelly or an anti-chafing product such as Body Glide, Sports Slick or Runner’s Lube. Or just put some band-aides over them.”

Use Band-Aids, then cover the Band-Aids with duct tape. Seriously. Also, forget running in cotton T-shirts. Invest in a what’s called a “technical” shirt which is just a fancy name for a polyester T-shirt. It’ll wick away the sweat which not only prevents chafing but also keeps you cooler.

Oh, and Shugs - you committed a serious breach of the triathlon honor code. I realize that here on T-Nation, everyone who lifts weights calls themself a “bodybuilder,” and that’s fine. But in triathlon, the title of “triathlete” must be earned, my friend, and it is earned by completing a tri. Doesn’t matter how short the distances. Doesn’t matter if you finish DFL (dead f*cking last). All that matters is that you finish.

Smiley face and all that. Just messin’ with you, Shugs.

I am really looking forward to seeing your progress pictures… in a strictly heterosexual sense.

Congrats on reaching 212!
