Phelps' Diet

He’s also, not only an olympic swimmer, but probably the greatest olympic swimmer, not only that, but he is a US olympic swimmer with major endorsement contracts.

I can’t say for certain but the guy probably has 10 trainers, 10 nutritionists, 10 dieticians, 10 cooks following him wherever he goes to ensure he’s getting the most out of his training, diet, nutrition, etc. lol

Who knows tho, maybe the guy eats big macs and breaks world records. lol I just find it easier to believe that he has a whole team of people, and the funds to back him, to make sure he’s the best that he could ever possibly be come game time.

It would be nice to think that he has 10 nutritionists, dieticians, etc following him around but he doesn’t. He simply goes to the local restaurants and eats a shitload of food. With his level of activity and fitness and size, I don’t get why this is such a hard concept to swallow (pun intended).

Of course he eats a lot of junk food. How could someone down that many calories if a good portion of it was fruits, vegetables, fiber? The aftermath would be unendurable.

That post was retarded. Nobody in their right mind would consume 2-3 thousand calories a day in gatorade, red bull, or whatever.

That is just flat out stupid on so many levels, insulin spikes, electrolyte balances, amounts of stimulants, etc.

Yea the guy is an awesome swimmer, probably the best their ever was, but he is still a human being and just because he can swim better than a friggin dolphin doesn’t mean that he has some freak body that could cause him to have a diet like that of the post.

He’s swimming 30 hours a week. Not wading in a pool playing marco polo - training at a level that helps him set 5 world records in 5 races, so far. That doesn’t count his weight training, which is 3X/week.

The guy is a freaking metabolic blast furnace.

I wouldn’t get caught up in the energy drink crap. I’m thinking it is some sort of weight gainer/protein drink - something that will provide some sustainable energy for an elite trainee of his level.

I heard him in an interview say he tries to get from 6K - 10K calories in per day. I think NYP was wrong on the 12K/day.

He doesn’t cook - so other than the shakes - he’s going to restaurants/fast food dives for the bulk of his energy intake.

Oh I don’t doubt that he is gobbling down calories and his metabolism is raging, hell he might even be in the 10-12k range. I just don’t believe that b.s. in 1000 cals at a time in “energy drinks” and some of the other nutritional facts.

Oh Noes! Duck and cover!

Who the hell said anything abot eating clean?!?!

your 5’10 150 you need to just eat…something.

I was kidding. And I also wish people would just shut the fuck up about my stats. It’s incredibly annoying.

I don’t disagree that he eats a ton of food, and that he is super active.

I just figure that since he is probably one of the most watched olympic athletes and has some endorsement contracts that people expect him to perform. When you have that much media and money following you around I think that every calorie he eats is accounted for and put through some tests to see what is helping him improve or not.

I dont think his success is just from swimming and eating a shitload of food. I think there is a LOT more to that. I mean like I said he is an olympic athlete, not your local high school swimmer.

So in summary, I agree he probably downs massive amounts of food, some of it may be junk, I also agree he burns a shit ton of calories. The only thing I disagree with is that his diet isn’t planned out and strict. I could be wrong but I’d bet my money that for the past 6 months he has had several people consulting him on what to eat. Even if he jumps in a restaurant I’m sure he consults with somebody as to what he eats.

I could be wrong…and since none of us know him personally it is all our opinion I guess…

If you make any comments about training or nutrition jokingly or not, people are going to give you crap about your stats. You have nothing to show for anything you can talk about.

You didn’t do a very good job at joking, next time say something like only kidding and maybe you won’t be treated so harshly.

If you don’t like people giving you crap about your stats then get bigger. Enough said.

He’s made no mention of having a team of trainers and nutritionists. He trained with “The Wolverines” - a swim club near the U of M, which is choc full of world class swimmers - which could be construed to say that he has several trainers/coaches on hand.

I am almost certain that, at $5mil/year, he has a publicist.

I really don’t care what his diet is like.

I just think it is amazing that the guy is putting away 6K-12K cals (take your pick from that range) and still can’t break 200lbs. Even at 6000, that’s a shit load of food for a 200 pound skinny guy.

We always knew that those “cut” guys coming out of prison weren’t stressing over which P+F meal to take before bed - or how many carbs they should eat per day. I wonder what Phelps’ BF % is:

Phelps’ diet - which involves ingesting 4,000 calories every time he sits down for a meal - resembles that of a reckless overeater rather than an Olympian.

Phelps lends a new spin to the phrase “Breakfast of Champions” by starting off his day by eating three fried-egg sandwiches loaded with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, fried onions and mayonnaise.

He follows that up with two cups of coffee, a five-egg omelet, a bowl of grits, three slices of French toast topped with powdered sugar and three chocolate-chip pancakes.

At lunch, Phelps gobbles up a pound of enriched pasta and two large ham and cheese sandwiches slathered with mayo on white bread - capping off the meal by chugging about 1,000 calories worth of energy drinks.

For dinner, Phelps really loads up on the carbs - what he needs to give him plenty of energy for his five-hours-a-day, six-days-a-week regimen - with a pound of pasta and an entire pizza.

He washes all that down with another 1,000 calories worth of energy drinks.

Phelps remains on course to at least equal Mark Spitz’s record of seven gold medals won at the 1972 Munich Games.

This is just the average american diet, but minus all the swimming, thats why the US is drowning in fatties.

no way he eats that much. Think about it, you have to wait 30-60 mins after eating to get in the pool.

 j/k

Michael Phelps swims 20 kilometers a day. Anything is possible.

Anything is possible just ask Kevin Garnett.

I gotta brag for a second, because I have swam 100km in a week, and I’m 6’7". You eat a lot, but it’s not even fun to eat that much. And yeah, you put a hurtin’ on your toilet.

He’s swimming 100km a week, and that alone is a training volume that’s incomprehensible. But don’t forget that he does ‘dryland’ on top of the swimming. Dryland is lifting, and I bet he lifts with more intensity and consistency than a lot of T-Nation readers.

Doesnt sounds like he lifts at all. according to this interview: Michael Phelps Interview - IGN

IGN Sports: You’re 6’ 4", about 200 pounds. Is your physique all from swimming, or do you hit the weights?

Michael Phelps: I’ve never lifted a single weight in my life. It’s all from training in the water, period. That’s not to say I wouldn’t lift in the future, but now, no.

*edit I just saw that the interview was from 2005 :frowning:

I guess you can’t believe everything you read…here’s a vid of Phelps weight lifting:

12,000 calories are burned in a day. Even the 5 hours of his daily on-and-off swimming routine is maybe 5,000 calories burned (1,000 / hour average). [/quote]

I burn 350 on a tread in 30 minutes without even trying. So let’s say that’s 700 in an hour. Swimming burns waaayyyy more calories and is agaisnt resistance.

He is also doing “sprint” type events, which you can say is a form of HIIT that burns more calories even after you stop. Coupled with the long swims he does to warm up, and 1,000 calories an hr seems kind of low to me.

I would also think that since the pools are actually kept rather cool, that would also contribute to calories being burned up. Add in his basic metabolic rate, which is prolly up over 3,000 cal a day, eating 12,000 doesnt seem like all that much.

The part I thought was funny is that he doesn’t eat every couple of hours but sits down to three big meals. He obviously doesn’t have time to eat often.

I guess, in his case, you CAN out-train a bad diet.

Fucking right it is!

I read that in the guardian today, and spent a good amount of time reflecting on it.

No doubt, the man pushes the human limits to their maximum, but how he can stomach that much food in three sittings is questionable. I think he eats more often than the press is reporting.

What’s also amazing is that he’s not even 200 pounds at his height, and manages to look very decent. He must have about as much fat on his body as in his head.
