At what point did Mike M. or ko say EVERYTHING was preventable by eating right and exercising? I agree with them that living a healthy lifestyle is probably the best thing someone can do to better their chances down the road. It is by no means a guarantee, and neither one of them ever said that. Since Mike M. seems so “uneducated”, and you seem to be the one who knows why kids are getting cancer, etc., maybe YOU could explain it to us.
And what would happen to the average life expectancy if more people did exercise and eat properly? What would happen to some of these “genetic” disorders if people quit putting toxic chemicals in their bodies? What caused these disorders to appear in the first place?
Thats a pretty defeatest attitude towards illness, but if you want to think that way, go for it. I will take the other route myself.
I agree with everything but the second quote. Red is positive and black is negative, unless you’re using AC, then black is hot and white is commmon unless it’s 220 volt, then red and black are both hot.
62,000,000 people fishing!!! PETA…Don’t wake a GIANT!!!
Rhinos are herbivores, they might kill a human or two but they won’t eat any.
Despite all the studies that have been done nobody is really sure what causes most cancers. If you look back into history before the time when the world was oh so polluted (note a hint of sarcasm here) you’d still find cancer in the humans that lived long enough to get it. Our really high infant mortality rate thinned out a lot of us then. Maybe, just maybe those of us that are kept alive through childhood by modern medicine or other intervention are the ones getting the cancer now? Every once in a while you read a story about some Shangri La place where people live to be 140 or so. Then those damn scientists go there and find out that they don’t count birthdays the same there as we do and the people are really croaking in their 70’s like everyone else. I’m not sure what causes cancer but PETA isn’t doing a damn thing to help anyone but their own weird agenda. PETA isn’t so much about animal welfare as it is animal rights. Those are two very different things. If you look at the long term goals of animal rights groups you see the abolition of pet ownership, banning fishing of any kind, and anything where any animal is subject to human impact or control. If PETA gets their way we’ll be wearing palm fronds for clothes and have pets made out of dried tofu and plankton (which died a natural death).I agree with you Mike! My fiance works in the medical field; for the most part she deals with pathetic cases that could have been avoided, i.e. they’re fat overweight sloths that really don’t give a shit about their health. My appendix ruptured back in early '97, I was a day away from losing my life (apparently I went 5 days with a ruptured appendix; possibly induced from heavy squatting in 40 degree celcius heat - no kidding!), spent 2 weeks in intensive care and 6 months of rehab, not nice! I think alot of people need a wake up call, if they only knew what it was like… sigh, I’m kind of afraid to see what the health care system is going to be like in the next 10-20 years!
Speaking of toxic, have you ever read the ingredients in or tasted a Butterball turkey? Yech! I eat turkey, but I’d never eat a Butterball again. Gotta read those labels. All those PETA phone calls serve them right for putting all that garbage into what should be a healthy food source.
Thanks for the support guys and this is an interesting discussion.

Old joke…but a good one
The main problem is that the rapid growth of industry has lead to pollution and perverse acts of farming/animal treatment. I personally think people should to some extent hunt/fish/grow their own foods. It’s just so much fresher and tastier and possibly healthier (was in Rockford, ILL with my brother the Pro chef. The food was INCREDIBLE!). I think there should be better regulations and groups that fight for better treatment of animals, alternative cures to diseases, etc. The problem is that these groups are full of nut jobs that have weird agendas. But, just for fun, if you wanted to weird PETA out, send them a copy of Ted Nugent’s cook book. SHould have them locking their doors at night.
Regarding your comments on commercial fisherman overfishing the population, I disagree in some instances. Now I can only speak for the area I live in which is Louisiana(which at one time was the biggest producer of seafood and now the 2nd biggest seafood producing state). Commercial fisherman have been stripped of almost all fishing methods over here and the recreational fisherman now outcatch 3-4 times the commercial in many species. My dad grew up a commercial fisherman and now owns a seafood company and I have watched the commercial regulations get out of hand because the people with money like to fish and also have a hold on the government. I do think that the commercial industry should be regulated but not shut down.
OH yes! What a great chance to vent my spleen, rant, and rave a bit. First of all the fishing aspect: It is not the sport fishermen who are doing all the damage. And trust me here I couldn’t catch a fish if it was starving in a bath tub. Our oceans are being systematicly over fished using technology that would blow your minds. Nets that are 10 kms long ( thats about 4.5 miles) and up to 250 mtrs ( read yards) deep. Very little escapes from thise sea going factories. Banning sport fishing is like the ban on marine tolets et al. Some years ago I was in a port on one of the American islands . There were three of us aboard with the USCG ( who in general are some pretty good guys) giving me a hard time because my 140 year old boat didn’t have a holding tank. About 500 yards away was an American aircraft carrier with over 5,000 people on board and it didn’t have a holding tank either. Get the idea gang? Turkeys this thread was about so I should mention turkeys and it seems there are a lot of them around these days. Want to bet the same gang who are screaming be kind to animals are also screaming Kill Sadam, slobering over the thought of another war on those damn who evers, and voted for the guys who are making it possible. HA, HA, says I. Typical double standards strike again. Save the turkeys and bomb the Iraqi children thats a good slogan. Then again ask me and I’ll say most of the real turkeys are in and around the White House right now. And if the truth be known few if any of the worlds population would cry if you rendered them all for candle wax. Wake up people there are thousands of people just like you who are suffering every day of their short lives and you are worried about saving Turkeys. Our oceans are so poluted that most fish have trouble living much less breeding. So what should be done? Stop sport fishing! Yeah right! Just keep dreaming if your lucky you won’t live long enough to see the results of what we have already done to this fine planet. Then again your children will. Think George cares?
I just wanted to say that I also sportfish and I like it a lot. I just think there should be a compromise between the sportfishers and the commercial fisherman. Sportfishers are doing it as fun and as a hobby while commercial fisherman are doing it as a living and to feed their families. For example, in Louisiana we have laws preventing commercial fisherman from fishing on weekends(except shrimp). Now what other reason whould this law be made but to keep the commercials out of the water while the recreationals fish on the weekends during their days off.
Steve, I will explain it to you. Genetic changes are the common denominater in causes of cancer. Current literature/research shows that a normal cell changes into a cancer cell when certain genes in the cell are activiated. If I knew what causes that gene to “tun-on”, I wouldn’t be sitting here responding to you. No offense intended.
Now, this gene is suggested to be inactive in normal cells and then in some way “turned-on” to create cancer cells. Most cancers occur due to an interaction between our bodies, genetic makeup (read hereditary), environment,
lifestyle, tobacco, sexual behavior, poor diet.
Interestingly, half of the more than 100 types of cancer can be traced through the family tree. Your welcome for the education.
I think this is the first intelligent conversation I’ve seen on animal treatment on here ever. Americans do live a relatively long life - but what about quality? How long can they survive without medication and frequent doctor attention? My grandfather is 85 now but he is on various pills, and finally just got his blood sugar to stabilize after my mom analyzed his diet and figured out what foods he was sensitive. All the pills in the world didn’t fix that - lifestyle did. How about the increasing percentage of birth defects? Three endocrinologists I saw when I was young all said that my bitchin gyno was likely influenced by the use of hormones in food and the effects of overly processed grain messing with my insulin and thus my hormones.
Industrialized society has its good side, but lets face it, it makes no sense in quite a few ways.
I’m with Mike on this principle: Don’t treat yourself like crap and be surprised when you feel like shit.
However, I’m with Ko in a lot of these groups adopt stances without completely considering every effect. Another example? The pesticide notification legislation pushed by the PIRG groups - while they are commendable for elevating awareness about the harmfulness of pesticides and the widespread use of such things - what ends up happening is that many companies will just use more pesticides in a blanket application since it will be prohibitively expensive to do spot treatment or any type of pesticide reduction plan. Even the organic lawn care companies see that and the three I’ve talked with (my fathers, and two other local ones) are all boycotting the bill because despite the animosity towards pesticides, it ennds up shooting itself in the groin.
As a vegetarian, I still abide by the belief that commercial animal slaughter/abuse is a much worse evil than actual consumption of meat. The environmental impact is atrocious and people just have another thing they don’t have to do for themselves (yes, I have chased chickens before and its good exercise…).
I’m going to be eating a fried turkey and a baked turkey, and I’ll eat as much as I possibly can all day long and for the several days following. In addition, I will continue to eat tons of red meat, chicken, fish and whatever else I can catch for the rest of my life!
Nate, you know being lower to the ground, you have a natural advantage for catching the chickens or tackling the animals by the legs. Not to mention a shorter path of deceleration when squatting to pick up a captured water buffalo. On the other hand, I can pick some pretty good fruit, and my superior pulling levers from being so long limbed allow me to withdraw vegetables and other foods from the ground with ease. ![]()
Stronski, unfortunately you have not informed me of anything new, and thus, you deserve no “thank you” from me. I assumed you, being the pinnacle of knowledge that you seem to make yourself out to be (by calling out well-meaning contributors like Mike M. and Coach Davies) might have some better insight into what exactly is turning these genes on. Instead, you pretty much agreed with Mike M. and ko that lifestyle, diet, etc., are possible contributors, and failed to include any new or helpful info.
How about, “If God didn’t intend for us to eat animals, he wouldn’t have made them out of meat” --John Cleese
