Periodization

O.K., here’s the basics. I’m 5’11, 185 at 8% body fat. I’m geting ready to bulk like a sonuvabitch, trying to regain weight from an all-summer-long cutting phase. I will be using 12-week cycles as outlined in King’s “Get Buffed” where Phase I is a basic contitioning phase, II is for hypertrophy, III is hypertrophy/strength, and IV is stregth /power. I will be following a diet based on John Berardi’s Massive Eating guidelines. My ultimate goal is to bo in top shape for spring break. My question is: Should I stay on a constant bulking phase and spend the last month or so before spring break on a cutting phase, or should I have a few weight loss phases inbetween, perhaps keeping by body fat below a certain percentage? If I haven’t provided enough info feel free to chew my ass.

i would try to set mass goal for yourself, ie. gaining a pound a week or every 2 weeks. If you are not achieving these goals increase your protein and calories until you are able to achieve your goals. If you go above a certain body fat level, say 10% then try to change your diet or training routine to keep the fat % low. It’s easier to keep fat off then to try to burn it off all at once. This way you can also see your lean mass results better. a good diet and training will certainly let you put on lean mass without the fat. laters pk
