Per aspera ad astra (strongman Koestrizer)

Oddly enough, I almost never verbally say “am” or “pm”, It’s almost exclusively in writing lol. Is it the same with y’all?

Haha this is really interesting and funny. In an in person English conversation I will always say am or pm and in that context it is normal for me.

Really? I mean I say “am” sometimes, but I use it ironically haha. The little nuances of language are so interesting cross-culturally.

Well I thought this was completely normal up until now. Haha I agree. Although it is probably less a cultural thing since my native language is German and I have only learned English. The foundation of that learning process was school and I was taught by German teachers who also were no native speakers.
I believe this is the reason why for us Germans, American English seems more familiar in comparison to British English. We learn about the differences between the two in school but the pronounciation we use is more similar to the American English. This is a mere observation by me though.

The successfull sumo deadlift at 170 kg

23.03.

New program today.

1 strict press (supposed to be 4 x 8)
3 x 8 @ 60 kg
6 @ 60 kg

2 hang clean
5 x 5 @ 60 kg

3 SSB Box squat (without briefs)
8 @ 122 kg - miscounted and also had to grind
2 x 10 @ 102 kg

4 pendlay rows (some t&g, some not)
3 x 10 @ 90 kg

5 lat pull down
2 x 8 @ 75 kg
15 @ 50 kg

Notes:

  • midsection was probably still a little unstable from deadlifts
  • Well… Maybe we should categorize this under “learning experience”… was pretty shitty all in all. No energy. The 4 x 8 on ohp should have been a sure thing. I also underestimated the differences the briefs make on box squats by A LOT! Both in terms of poundage but also in how it feels on my hips. I thought I didn’t want to put myself through 10 reps with briefs on… Well that’s what I get for being a pussy
  • I hope I get used to these long sessions and full body training
  • got done with everything including warm up in less than 1.30 h. Maybe I should rest more between sets

25.03.

This was the most exhausting training in recent history. I know I sound like a pussy but the 3 x 10 on log and deadlifts at this intensity was brutal for me. I really am out of shape I guess. Laughable when you read some other guy’s logs.
I really wanted to do something outside since it was the first day with spring weather. Beautiful sunny day. I also wanted to do log presses. So I first used my main gym for the strength stuff and then drove to my girlfriend’s uni because the crossfit team recently got two atlas stones, pretty light ones but better than nothing. It’s a ten minute drive so it was okay.

1 log lift (clean once)
75 kg x 10
75 kg x 9 - messed up the 6th rep and didn’t have another one in me
75 kg x 10

2 sumo deadlift (t&g)
140 kg x 10
140 kg x 10
140 kg x 10 - all t&g but the last rep

3 some fun with atlas stones

  • c&p with ca. 50 (?) kg atlas stone for some reps
  • c&p with the 145 lbs atlas stone. Got it on the third try.
  • medley: 5 stone to shoulder with the 145 lbs stone and a shouldered carry with the lighter stone for ca. 20 meter. 2 rounds with 2 minutes rest.

Video:

Notes:

  • nothing pumps up my hams like t&g sumo deadlifts.
  • second day of the program and I already hate it. Which probably means it is good for me. It certainly is good for getting me (back) into strongman shape. I lately trained like a powerlifter who emphasizes overhead stuff which would cost me in a competition.
  • today I was supposed to do push presses but I want to stick with the log if possible. I have a feeling that this might be an event in June.

Notes:

  • I was in a bad mood and pretty pissed when I entered the gym and this Session made it even worse. I am freaking furious!
  • Out of 3 training days, 2 were shit. And this is my fault. I could have prevented this. I take the full blame and I hate myself for it right now
  • I am kind of embarrassed by this workout. I really am.

Damnit that was shit. How can you stand to look at yourself right now

Naahh just kidding. You know what you did and why it was bad.
From here, well a lot of exercises in short time, usually ends up bad.

Next time you’re in a hurry, pick only one and do that really properly.

Use it to fuel your training and leave that bad mood in the gym! Everyones different but i cannot train when not angry. If im not il hype myself up and think of shit thats happened that i hate and listen to heavy metal. Its gelps me focus otherwise i just daze around, being lazy. also when i hype myself up and get really angry thats when i set prs lol.

Not being able to train when not angry ist not a good thing. I hype up as well occasionally but I try to save it for when it counts. I find training in a hyped up state very draining.

Although you are right that being pissed off can fuel a workout. For me it depends. I can’t make that work every time.

I should have just trained at night or something. Even tomorrow would have been better. It’s over now anyway. Nothing I can do but move on.
But I got to let off some steam every now and then, haha

Man this is not my day. My bad workout and big fight with girlfriend (which caused my initial anger) is insignificant in comparison but getting bad news in an already bad mood is kind of kicking the guy whose down.

It now seems certain that grandma can’t return home and will have to be taken care of around the clock in a nursing home, with severe loss of motor skills and brain function (bleeding on the brain caused this, kind of like a stroke).

Also one of my dogs died of cancer today. Actually he died because the doc put him to sleep but that is splitting hairs.

Not sure why I note this in my log since I haven’t posted anything personal in a while.
Don’t worry though guys, I am alright. I really am.

Hope things pick up for you soon mate.

Talk about life taking a run-up and kicking you square in the nuts. That’s just plain shit.

Hope you come good soon. Condolences on your losses.

Thanks @caesium32 and @MarkKO.
What’s bugging me right now is that I am not there. I have seen my family once in half a year and get all these news through phone calls.
But that is life.

Back to sports news:

  1. I am very sore today, haha.

  2. I have had a look at the events they had the last time at the contest I am about to do. Now that doesn’t mean that they have to be the same this year of course but I have a feeling that they still might be very similar.

  3. yoke walk with 180 kg for 25 meter

  4. log press (clean once and press away!) 70 kg

  5. loading medley with 60 kg keg, 70 kg keg and 90 kg sandbag

  6. farmer’s walk with 80 kg per hand for max distance

So this is a very non static competition. All weights are very much doable for me. The biggest thing that I would need to work on here is my foot speed and also my conditioning.
I would love it if the log was clean once and press away. With a little bit of work I should be able to do 15 reps I guess. I need to account for down signals and everything but it is a good event for me.
Now farmer’s for max distance is interesting. I am not bad at farmer’s per se but with my tiny hands grip strength isn’t exactly my advantage. Never tried it and unsure how to prepare for it, @T3hPwnisher and @strongmanvinny2 any ideas maybe?
The yoke weight itself is not a problem but I need to make sure to be quick. I have a yoke on the way so no excuse to not do well.
