Per aspera ad astra (strongman Koestrizer)

17.03.

Was training with the Kraftsportfreunde Bayern which roughly translates to friends of strength sports Bavaria. This is a 1.5 hour drive from me. I made the trip with my boss.
The crew was great. I competed against two of them in my last comp in Salzburg (one won it with ease, the other had to pull out injured). They all were helpful and it was a very positive atmosphere. We just followed what they were doing. Most of them were above my weight but there were 2 complete beginners. Their stretegy to event training seems to be “go hard as fuck and if in doubt, add more weight”, haha.

1 log lift
70 kg x 5
80 kg x 3
90 kg x 1 - ties PR and was easy
100 kg x 0 - got the clean but failed the press. I knew the jump was too high but our host said "go for 10 kg more and so I did
95 kg x 1 PR! Redeamed myself with this 5 kg all time PR

2 farmer’s walk (they had really odd to use farmer’s handles. More shaped like a suitcase than a bar. Short and stubby. I think they were a lot harder than what I am used to)
70 kg per hand x 40 meter (beltless - because I forgot my belt on this set)
80 kg per hand x 40 meter

3 circus dumbbel (was excited for this one as I have never done it. Loved it!)
40 kg x 3
50 kg x 1

4 yoke walk (never done this as well. Was awful haha)
160 kg x 40 meter (20 forth and back)
200 kg x 40 meter (as above) - very wobbly. Messed up the step length. A very challenging implement.

5 viking press (weight listed is what we had loaded on)
50 kg x 5
70 kg x 5 or so
90 kg x 3
100 kg x 1

Notes:

  • awesome day with lots of new experiences. Will go again!
  • I don’t know why everyone finds viking press easier than barbell. I mean I was pretty gassed at that point but sill the barbell is easier imo since it is in contact with the body and so I can transfer the power from my legs better into the press.
  • really wish I had a team to train with back here. You just can’t help to perform better with like minded people around who help you and want you to perform good.
  • I will post videos this evening.

Training with a group is fun if everyone is there to lift. Lifting alone can be done…but having your buddies there yelling at you to not be a weakling is even better

For anyone who bothers to watch these videos, here is my attempt at some new strongman events + a log lift PR:

The yoke looks brutal…

Europe is so nice. I hope you guys get the whole immigration thing figure out before it destroys the culture there…

Yeah that was about my experience. All the guys there swore that it makes you a lot stronger in about everything.

Kind of weird remark here since I don’t see a connection to my strongman training.

I think the media over in the US blows things out of proportion though. Not saying that the situation is an easy one. It certainly poses a challenge for anyone.
What I am more worried about at the moment is what it brings out in people. If you look at the last parlament election, the far right party got a lot of votes. That is a development taking place in most of Europe.
A lot of people I am around say things about people from other parts of the world that I just hope they don’t mean.
I don’t support everything that is going on but I don’t like how it is talked about and perceived by people.

Nice videos man. Looking really fun.
I totally agree with you about the “situation”. The bad and many times fake news, just brings out the worst in people.
Really hoping that will change soon.

Totally agree and I hope so too.

So spot on it isn’t funny. It makes me sad and angry hearing people say these things, especially when they have never had or seen a single bad experience with the people they vilify.

Exactly! Some of the statements I hear on a near daily basis are down right frightening. Stuff you would read under youtube videos… But made by normal adults.

I hate this talk. Sure it is an extreme stretch, but they didn’t start by killing right away 70 years ago… hateful speaking it was. Germany even is pretty mild in this in comparison to some of our european allies (regarding the crisis right now).

Going into this my shoulders were toasted from event training. I didn’t really notice how bad it was until I started the training. Even just pressing the empty bar had my shoulders burning, haha!

1 strict press
Up to
50 kg x 3
60 kg x 2
70 kg x 1
80 kg x 1 - PR! All time best
70 kg x 4
60 kg x 8

2 seated swiss bar press
50 kg x 8
60 kg x 6
50 kg x 8

3 lat pull down
65 kg x 10
80 kg x 8
90 kg x 8
95 kg x 5

4 seated cable row
3 x 10 @ 80 kg

5 close grip db floor press
30 kg x 16

Notes:

  • Well especially considering how badly depleted my shoulders were, this was a fucking great PR!
  • haha take a second to watch the video. I’d say that was a true RPE 10.

Debated wether to go in and pull today or to wait. Sleep has been shit. On the other hand my schedule is a little difficult the next days. Also you can’t chose how you feel on comp day as well. It didn’t work out but it is what it is.

1 Sumo deadlift
140 kg Last warm up beltless and doh
155 kg x 1 - freaking easy and fast
170 kg x 1 - No problem but an effort
180 kg x No
180 kg x nope. Not today.
140 kg x 10 (all t&g except the last. Just to show I can.)

2 Front squat
50 kg x 2
80 kg x 1
80 kg x 6

3 seated hip abduction
3 x 20

Notes:

  • 140 kg x 10 was a super hard set! Maybe I should incorporate more t&g. It never had a place in my training. I know that Pwnisher is a fan. That kind of is an argument. Hans and glutes pumped to the max
  • what went wrong? 1. Not enough sleep. Felt very tired. This was an am workout. 2. Didn’t rest enough after heavy training. 3. Attempt selection. 170 kg was the goal for today. If I had aimed at 180 right away I would have gone 150-165-180.
  • all of it doesn’t matter. Don’t get me wrong, I am in good mood and not down at all. I firmly believe I would have had this under different circumstances. I have no regrets right now and I think I am on track of getting my deadlift moving again.

If only I had waited to post until today lol.

Hahaha yeah I guess I am getting accustomed in my writing through all you damn Americans! Although the funny thing is that If I am talking in English to someome I will always use am and pm. Even If I am talking to someome from an arabian country. It also is what we learn in school so it feels natural to say in English but no one would get it if I say it in German.
