Per aspera ad astra (strongman Koestrizer)

Am I right in thinking your coach is Paul Smith? From UK Strongest Man?

That would be correct. He has been coaching me since June 2020.

Really enjoyed watching him in UK Strongest Man, it was an impressive show.

Yeah he is an incredible competitor. Impressive work ethic. Especially given his height and “endocrinologic” disadvantage against the other guys at that level.

Disadvantage?

He is short and natty (like 178-179 cm or something). That isn’t average guy short but foe a strongman it’s basically dwarf size.

Well and the lack of drugs, although obviously a choice he made/ makes, is a unique disadvantage at that level, haha.

That’s what I assumed you meant, but wasn’t clear in my food-coma induced state.

We are in the glorious time period of food comas and mild to severe intoxication that we call holidays. Very understandable.

I am actually thinking about switching coaching services in the future but I’m reluctant since I have been a client for so long (which also means I pay much less than he currently charges). I don’t have a reason to complain, I’m just intrigued to learn more by experiencing different coaching styles first hand. There is a coach in Australia who seems to be a very good fit for me but he also charges quite a bit more than what I’m currently paying.

Feeling a little weird today. Kinda off. Hopefully this isn’t a sign that I’m getting sick again or still fighting the side effects or something.

1 oh squat
3 x 5 @ 60 kg

2 deadlift
4 x 4 @ 200 kg

3 power jerk
4 x 2 @ 120 kg
1 x 4 @ 120 kg

4 seated cable row
3 x 12

1 squat
3 x 3 @ 155 kg

Lol how can that be this heavy?

2 bench press (paused)
3 x 10 @ 80 kg

Implementing the pauses gave a wicked pump.

3a box jumps
5 x 3

3b banded leg curls
4 x 15

3c lat pull down
3 x 12

4 lateral raises
3 x 12 @ 10 kg

Just a lil’ bonus. Also did 3 x 12 hammer curls yesterday. In theory those should be easy gains on the table and they’re not taking away from anything else.

Notes:.

  • sluggish today but it’s also the light “in between day” so to say, so that’s okay as long as I bring it Friday.

I wish I had your off day deadlift :joy:

Haha gunning for bigger things right now mate. 200 is a weird in between weight right now. I’m so used to it that I’m prepared to handle it twice a week at any moment but yet it’s still a weight that I need to take serious and that’s exhausting to deal with.

The last one of our dogs died today. Until yesterday night she seemed exceptionally fit and well for her age (would have been 16 in February) but a scan by the vet revealed that she had multiple tumors on different organs and one of them is apparently bleeding. So my parents made the immediate call to have her put down. This time I’m not there for it, since this isn’t “my dog” like the last one I wrote about last year and I would take too long to get there.
She was old and had a great life so I can’t say this is tragic.

Sad to see them go but it sounds like she had a good and long life.

Still a bit of soreness in the posterior chain left somehow.

1 deadlift
2 x 5 @ 60 kg
5 @ 100 kg
3 @ 140 kg
2 @ 180 kg
1 @ 200 kg
1 @ 212,5 kg

3 @ 225 kg - PR

Tougher than I would have liked but legit execution, I’d say.

2 Power jerk
4 x 4 @ 107,5 kg

3 bent over row
3 x 12 @ 75 kg

4 cyclist squats
3 x 15 @ 60 kg

Holy shit this was a tough session. Sleep was very suboptimal (still not used to sharing the bed space). That deadlift took a whole lot out of me and I had to talk myself into and through those squats. At the end I was floored like a turtle on it’s back, contemplating if I should just spend my Silvester evening right there on the gym’s locker room floor.

You made that look easy, my man! Congrats on the PR. And Happy New Year!
