Per aspera ad astra (strongman Koestrizer)

These seem way too light for you. Your Squat has to be a good 50kg better than mine, as a minimum, and these aren’t much above what I could do.

Here’s the thing: It was supposed to be a 4 x 5. My front sauat is a laughing stock right now

210 fairly recently.

I’m confused by this.

Me too. At least about the part with the backwards progression. That front squats are hard for me is pretty easy to explain with my leverages. That they are THIS bad is understandably weird.

With them being in the state they are I am beginning to question their worth for me at this point in time.

That sounds like a really good and unusally heavy comp for a 3rd league cup!

I’ve never tried Bavarian stone lifting (and I regret it, since I lived in Bavaria) but I guess semi sumo deadlifting will be a good preparation.
A good friend of mine is actually a very successfull stone lifter and I know when he prepares for a stone lifting comp. he utilizes tons of deficit deadlifts. But in a true stone lifting comp, you combine weight and height, so there’s a big focus on having a big ROM.

Re atlas stone: Sorry to tell you know that you’ve spend the money but there’s a good to fair chance Heinz will only allow spray tacky (like they use in handball). I would absolutely advice on going with forearm guards. I use makeshift ones (I cover my forearms in kitchen roll paper and wrap duct tape around). I am not a good stone lifter, simply because I don’t have stones to train with and only get to do them at comps, haha. Preparing with sandbags, front squats and zerchers can build a solid base.
My top tips for the actual stone: Really roll the stone onto your hands, wedge them under there as far as you can. Absolutely grip the middle median of the stone. A little to far in front and it rolls back and too far back it rolls forward.

Farmer’s: They could literally use any type. Most likely some kind of ATX model. If you have the grip strength, I would advice working on foot speed! Don’t go to comp weight often. Use 60-80 kg per hand in training and build quick feet. I am pretty decent at moving events and the number one mistake I see guys doing is going top heavy too oftern. Especially on the yoke! Train slow to be slow.

Log: If you know, 100 is out t if reach, that’s fine. Don’t worry about it. Go for technical efficiency and if you’re not already, start doing cleans for every single rep.

I know Roman, who is most likely going to be the organizer/ head ref depending if Heinz shows up (quick drive for him, so I’m sure he will). Roman is a really decent guy and encouraging to beginners. I’m betting it’s going to be a well run show and you’re going to have a blast!

Some things to consider:

  • warm ups: You can always spot the newbies here. Because they begin way too early and end up achieving a new 1 rm strict press all out grinder 25 minutes before the log lift event. Chill, move jump on the equipment if you get a chance. Consider it’s going to be a long day.
  • stimulants: Again… long day ahead! Depending on your coffein preferances and tolerance, you’re gonna want to pace yourself and don’t get a heart attack before the log, only to be dead tired when it’s time for stone lifting.
  • eating: You’ll see all kinds of weird stuff. Depending on your stomach/ digestion, I’d go with a mighty breakfast and then bring easy snacks that you can nibble on between events.
  • rules meeting: Everything will be absolutely clear, don’t worry about things you’re unsure about beforehand. There’s always gonna be that guy who will ask out every detail anyway. If not, be that guy. Under all circumstances: WATCH FOR THE DOWN AND START COMMAND.
  • equipment: Check your bag four times. Train with the stuff you’re going to use.

Most importantly: Have fun! Socialize and make some good connections and memories. It’s what will make you want to return. Don’t worry about your placing! Don’t worry about your weight/ weight classes!

Came madly prepared for this one even though it’s the lightest workout of the week, haha.
Had a good quad + hip flexor massage and a full nap before training. I have to admit I have a crush on the girl giving those massages to me. Difficult decision if I want to act on it because a) we’re colleagues and will be for several more years, b) we’ve become good friends and I prioritize that (don’t want to lose it/ make it awkward) and c) no self esteem.
Anyway this wraps up that part of the log entry, let’s get to the sweaty bits.

1 deadlift (beltless)
3 x 5 @ 150 kg

2 clean + press (no axle yet)
5 x 3 @ 85 kg

Heavy power curls and strict(sh?) pressing. All beltless

3 seated box jumps
5 x 3

4 bench press
4 x 5 @ 110 kg
1 x 4 @ 110 kg -.-

Tried out a wider grip. Based on how this went, I overestimated myself on bench. Shoulders and arms a little fatigued oing in though.

5 pull ups
4 x 5

More like 3-4… really not gainig any ground at all here.

Thanks for all the tips and insights!

Yeah, I’m really not concerned with weight classes at all. I’m only slightly above the 90kg cutoff, but I’m currently gaining a little bit of weight.
Good to know about the tacky, guess I’ll get some of that handball stuff. Didn’t even know that existed. Do you put kitchen paper below the duct tape purely to make it more comfortable or do you think it actually works better that way?

This whole thing has been a long time coming. In 2019 I really wanted to do a competition but they were all already full at the time they were publically announced and then in 2020, when the 3rd league was announced I thought hey, this is going to be the year, but we all know how that went. This year, I’d like to do at least one more comp after this one, ideally Walldürn in September, that would be the closest to me and my wife and kid could come along for the day.

My pleasure.

No, just comfort and preservance of arm hair, haha.

Oh shoot, didn’t realize Walldürn is hosting a 3rd league cup! They used to do 2nd league. I highly recommend it, had a great experience. Markus “Eisi” is a top bloke as a host and the arena was very cool.

Too bad for us, there’s not a lot left for the German Cup division. I am actually looking at just 2 comps this year as of right now! One private invitational and then the German cup near Leipzig. I can’t imagine the fibo is going to go ahead in November and even if so, I wouldn’t go and then the only other thing is the German finals qualifier, to which 2nd and 1st league athletes are invited this year as an exemption. But holy fuck I’ve seen the event list… no thanks, haha.

In some instances it helps to take a look back. Doesn’t change how I fail to view myself in a positive way but trying to build confidence.

Second one because I learned how to do collages with my phone, haha.

More than justified here, my friend! Really nice work.

Thanks man!

The dates are all wrong btw.

It’s June 2021, November 2020, September 2020.
Welcome to 2021 Koestrizer, it’s only half way over…

30.06.

Treated myself to the spa.
4 rounds of sauna, lots of chilling in the whirlpool and some dives through the ice bath and what not.
Didn’t find anyone to accompany me but boy did I miss this!

Should help with the intense soreness I am currently experiencing.

Dude, not sure how I missed it, but so happy to see you get that 140. Got chills watching the video. Fuxking great!!

1 log lift
6 x 2 @ 101 kg

Did every first rep as a viper press. Each one was a PR.

2 paused front squat
4 x 5 @ 100 kg

3 bent over row with 4 sec. eccentric
3 x 8 @ 70 kg

what the hell?!

4 sandbag carry
3 x 40m with a drop and turn at 20m

This is hell. The sandbag is still loose and completely wet.

Notes:

  • rocky start into the week but this session was brilliant all in all! Log was feeling very strong!
  • I am fucking sore.
  • had to do some Tai-Chi today and yesterday. Not my cup of tea.
  • I am getting more and more involved in my gym’s community and am really loving the place

Congrats on the 140!! Knew you had it. The video was really something else (in a good way)

Thanks a lot, Bagsy! That’s probably the most visiable emotional reaction you’re gonna see out of me.

Everything hurts. Soreness is really bad. Gotta love a new training block.

1 paused deadlifts - 3 sec. pause, right under knee in the eccentric.

3 x 5 @ 140 kg

2 clean + press (clean every rep)
5 x 3 @ 85 kg

3 sandbad load (no run)
3 x 1 @ 125 kg
1 x 2 @ 125 kg - crazy grind

4 walking lunges
3 x 20m @ 20 kg dumbbells

5 pull ups
4 x 5

Notes:

  • I have a tennis match tomorrow. It’s the first time I’ll have a racket in my hand this year… who needs training anyway? Yeah gotta quit the team for next year’s season. No idea how I’m gonna even move my body arpund the court.
  • those are the toughest sandbags I’ve ever used. There is a lot of air in them (the 125 kg one is a 150 kg size) and they are piss wet at the bottom (the gym owner filled wet sand in). They’re a bitch to use to say the least. Still the first rep always went smoothly and the second was horrible. Weight just shifted everywhere and I couldn’t get it in a decent position for an extension. After I got the second load on either the 3rd or 4th set (not sure), I gave it everything I had and left it at that.
  • started very sore into this one. So sore that the 140 kg deadlifts already fried up my lower back. Just adjusting to the new week and minus one rest day. I’m gonna be fine.
  • cleans were really decent for me.
