Ignorance is bliss! And I mean that in the friendliest of ways. I’m really happy for you that you don’t understand this — truly.
Oh I laughed at my ignorance as I was getting aware of it through this experience. I didn’t laugh at the people not getting their calories in.
I have used this tactics before, often when I’m too mentally drained to eat all day: I would try to eat the highest calorie dende food there is to try and make up for it. Health wise a stupid idea but sometimes you literally can’t get the food down.
Figured, you did say “laugh at myself” rather than “laugh to myself”
Burgers and ice cream? This is my kind of log.
That looks AMAZING!
This is the first time I’ve actually wanted to eat a burger after seeing a picture
09.03.
The entire goal for today was a double at 116 kg and then a maxout next week. There is a lot to untangle about what happened but lets get to the workout first.
1 power snatch
4 x 3 @ 60 kg
2 log lift (clean once)
few @ 46 kg
few @ 66 kg
2 or 3 @ 86 kg
1 @ 96 kg
1 @ 106 kg
fail @ 116 kg (fail to press it once, that is)
1 @ 111 kg
1 @ 116 kg - PR. Even for @simo74 this was a RPE 10.5
3 deadlifts (power bar, first set beltless)
3 x 5 @ 170 kg
4 floor press
3 x 10 @ 97,5 kg - not that I could tell for sure but this is probably a PR.
Skipped rows. Rain was intensifying, I was freezing cold and couldn’t be arsed anymore tbh.
Okay now lets see where we are here:
- Log is feeling off. It has been for the last two weeks or so. Specifically my rectus femoris is pissed and my ability to lean back (hyperextend from my lower and mid back) is reduced. So I can’t press the way I did at the start of this training cycle (leaned back to get more triceps in) or at least it doesn’t feel as natural anymore.
- We ran into the same problem we did with the deadlift, it seems. My progress on log was impeccable a few weeks ago and I was absolutely sure I would be able to press in the low 120s. I think we backed off too late and reached the point of diminishing returns. This is a very thin path and a difficult call to make. Maybe a deload earlier would have allowed to push more later. I am not sure, there are definitely multiple factors at play. The deload last week didn’t allow for adequate recovery in it’s form in relation to my recovery debt.
- I didn’t feel the adrenaline. I tried, I dug deep, I tried to pump myself up, but I didn’t really get in the zone. Multiple factors at play. Adrenal fatigue through fatigue might be one, stress and lack of sleep, the fever over the weekend, lack of food (lost 2 kg)… lots of options. Not sure that’s important
- I did press 116 kg for a PR! As with the deadlift however I know I definitely fell short of what I could have done, given what I did for reps during this build up. So I am obv. pissed. BUT and that’s the important part here, we gathered good data. I already talked to Paul who will adjust the rest of this week’s program and then use the data we now have to cater the next training phases more to my individual needs.
We need that 120 kg. We will get that 120 kg. And it won’t be long. That is a promise.
I haven’t forgotten about the 140 kg barbell press either.
I am okay, I really am. If anything, I am hungry for more.
@dagill2 doing my part to harden you mentally during your cut.
@anna_5588 thanks, quite the compliment! The beef was really nice and the ratios were good.
When I saw the picture, I had a very viceral reaction. I swear I could taste it ![]()
The crispy looking bacon really sealed it for me
If I were your coach, given what I know about your health, I wouldn’t program it to rely on being amped too much.
I don’t know if it is relying on that necessarily. I mean, in a way it is part of the sport to turn up and bring it on a specifically given day. I just think this training cycle didn’t work out as planned and this was not at all supposed to be a hard grinding single.
Fair counter argument. But that’s part of a lot of sports. How often does it need to be trained with someone that possess the ability? I get that it is a big part of conjugate, learning how to grind, but I don’t get the impression that it is the only way.
What are the snatches shoring up? Do you lack power?
I’ve never understood the idea of “learning to grind” to be “learning to get amped up”. I could definitely, definitely be wrong. @T3hPwnisher or @bulldog9899 might be able to clear that up for me.
Ah, I didn’t mean it to imply that “learning to get amped” → “learning to grind” (or vice versa). More that, if you are attempting a max effort you’ll inevitably amp yourself up. It’s possible to get amped for a sub-max effort to, but at least as far as my experiences are concerned then the weight is submax but the intent is something maximal such as a rep PR.
How do you determine that someone possesses that ability?
Absolutely. I am the slowest guy around unless there is a yoke on my back.
I’d say a certain mindset is necessary to grind. That is different for anyone and doesn’t require a ‘classic’ amp up/ visible rage. You never saw Big Z smash his head into a wall or throw chairs but I’m pretty sure he knew how to switch on whatever he needed to grind out weights and block pain.
I wouldn’t necessarily say that the intent in my case at this point of the program had much to do with the conjugate system’s idea of learning to grind. At the heart of it, this was just the linear progression step but through different factors, some listed above, I fell outside of the spectrum of the expected linear progression.
I don’t think there’s many lads or lasses around slinging 3 digit overhead presses that can’t push themselves come game time.
Mate that 116 was freaking quality. You are one tough mother. Love it.
I think the important factor here is “how much more can you get from being amped up vs. just executing the lift without any psychological preparation”.
@dagill2 this is a oversimplification but grinding is nothing more then sticking with and completing a lift once bar speed falls off or it stalls. Some guys are good at it others arent… for example I can grind a press or a squat. But im shit on griding on deads… once bar speed drops down to a certain level im fucked.
Getting amped up is nothing more then focusing in along with utilizing controlled aggression.
