Per aspera ad astra (strongman Koestrizer)

25.11.

Sleep so far this week:
Su-Mo ca. 3 hours.
Mo- Tue: 0 whatsoever
Tue- We: about 5 hours.
I could basically audition for the walking dead now, they wouldn’t have to use a lot of make up to make me look like a zombie.
Still I had a better start into this week than I did into the previous weeks and that’s what I’m chosing to focus on.
Will have a nice takeout dinner tonight in celebration of my sister’s birthday.

A bit sore going in (go figure, right?).

1 oh squat
4 x 6 @ 45 kg

2 “power” clean (w. power bar)
5 x 3 @ 90 kg - PR

There might have been a fewcontinentals in there… 3rd rep of set 2 + 3 + 5.

3 deadlift
Warm ups
2 x Reps @ 60 kg
5 @ 100 kg
1 @ 140 kg
1 @ 160 kg

3 @ 180 kg

4 vertical jump
5 x 3

5 btn press (strict)
3 x 12 @ 50 kg

6 Meadows rows (didn’t know the name last time)
4 x 10 per arm @ 30 kg (plates)

Notes:

  • Those were some horrible cleans even for me, haha. Completely forgot to use this technique thing. Still a PR, I was never good at moving weight in this.
  • Nice to be back at 4 wheels. Done without aggression for very smooth reps. In reality this is only 80 % of my max but still 4 plates gets me a little excited. Sore quads made these a little slower than they would have otherwise been but I’m pleased, they were easy.

What’s your caffeine intake like?

Minimal these days. I used to have 6-8 cups of coffee and sometimes energy drinks before training. These days it’s 1-3. I am usually so anxious and stressed throughout the day that I don’t get tired. My mind can’t get any rest and I feel like my heart might explode. My body is kinda falling apart in this, not to mention my sickly look but I am not tired per se.
The sleep situation is what it is despite taking a mild sleeping aid (Baldrian) by the way.

Have you tried 5-HTP?

It’s really helped my mom with her anxiety

What is the size of your cup? I find that if I’m wired, and my sleeping aid(s) won’t work, that night ends up being worse. I’ve never had locked-in syndrome but I describe the experience as locked-in-syndrome-lite.

250 ml.

I think i know what you mean. It’s a weird sensation

Never heard of it, I could bring it up with the doc on Monday.:+1:

While I mention her and because we’ve discussed health care options about a week back: I contacted the institute last Friday. Spoke to a secretary and said that I need a call back from my doc and that it’s really urgent. I didn’t get one. I haven’t seen her in a few months, for all she knew I could have called to say I’ll end things. I get that these people have a ton on their plate and probably have a lot of experience to determine an emergency situation but that felt cheap. Especially since the lady on the phone said that I would get a call.

Good, that’s a common culprit which is why I ask.

It’s worse than just being awake.

Are you on any SSRIs currently? I believe 5-HTP plays a part with serotonin and I just want to highlight that.

I had a similar experience, I flat out called them on it. I explained what could happen to a hypothethical patient or me in a different state. After that they changed routines.

I know you live in a small space, so changing sleeping area might not be an option for you but another thing I like to do that is against common best sleep practices is just put on Netflix on my phone (or the TV) and lie there and listen. I’ll close my eyes and “try” to sleep and that audio input is enough to calm my brain down. I’ve also had success with: I’m going to watch these movies (ensure that you queue them using something like VLC) and stay awake. I always end up falling asleep. I might not get many hours, but >0 is better than 0.

Yeah I definitely need to discuss any additional medication, even if it is over the counter stuff without a prescribtion, with my doc. I’ve also thought about giving cbd a try (although I’m still half convinced it’s a scam).

I plan to do that. I am a rational thinker, I understand what probably went wrong but it’s not acceptable.

I have fallen asleep once maybe twice during a movie in my lifetime. I can’t do that. My current routine is: Meditate, lay down and watch 1 or 2 episodes on Netflix, try to sleep (aka lay awake for a few hours until I pick up my phone again).

Last night was the “best” sleep of this week. I woke up once or twice and had a light sleep but more hours and fell asleep much easier. Doesn’t sound like much but compared to the last days… I attribute that to the fatigue from training as well as a bit of alcohol consumption. Which is not an everyday solution.

Your too young to be falling asleep watching a movie. That’s what us old blokes do.

Now you remind me of my dad. He has the ability to fall asleep during the broadcast of any sporting event. I remember as a kid waking up in the middle of the night to watch boxing with him and he was usually out snoring before the bell rang to end round 1.

I think my dad has literally never seen a full movie in his life. He watches the first 15 mins then falls asleep and then wakes for the last 10 mins. We would watch a movie which was awful and dad would always say it was good. That’s because he only ever watched the first car chase and the end action scene.

Speak for yourself, that’s… actually, that’s exactly what I do every night. The better half watches her stuff on TV and I go to sleep.

I’ve fallen asleep at a death metal concert. What age am I?

Whatever it is we’re doing you won it

How hammered where you though? A mate of mine, who has a tendency to fall asleep at a certain blood acohol level, has managed to fall asleep with his head on the giant sound box in a night club before.

Dead sober

I would be jealous if I didn’t know that you lost your ability to fall asleep this quick.

I might have headbanged myself into a concussion earlier that night, who knows?

Still winning

Under 32 - no old blokes can cope with that loud noise

I must be ancient then, because I can barely cope with the noise from the drying machine :joy:
