Per aspera ad astra (strongman Koestrizer)

1 log lift
1 @ 91 kg
1 @ 96 kg
1 @ 101 kg
1 @ 106 kg
1 @ 111 kg
0 @ 115,5 kg

Confession time: This was the first time I went off program (was scheduled to stop at 111 kg). And promptly got the check for it. Honestly my nerves just got the best of me. I thought if I can make this, then i have a shot at 120 kg in contest, bla bla bla…
Log felt a lot better than last week but I had some issues:

  1. wasn’t sure when to breath! Tried it with one breath but that nearly knocks me out and then tried ‘breath-deadlift-breath-clean-press’.
  2. I couldn’t transfer enough power from my legs into the full press
  3. I lost balance overhead (see me take extra steps even on the lighter weights)

2 yoke
4 x 18 (drop & turn at 9m) @ 240 kg - all in ca. 12 seconds.

3 box jumps
5 x 3

4a pendlay rows
3 x 12 @ 90 kg

4b hollow holds
4 x 40 sec.

Notes:

  • yoke feels fantastic atm.
  • I found a gym where I can drop in friday or Saturday to do a 20m yoke run and a carry medley. No tire though and the head coach wasn’t sure about the log diameter but suspected it’s smaller. If in doubt - and coach decides I shall do log- I can still bring my own

Don’t get the one I have!

Not gon lie the stubby ones look a bit strange lel

It’s a really shit one. I usually do better on other logs. The pocket cut outs are garbage.

There’s a only 8 inchers like 22cm ones around too. A few comp size but looking at over 500 kangaroo dollars

Might as well use an axle then, lol. Mine’s 13 inches.

Weird flex but ok. Ye I’d want a close to a 13inch log press. One place was selling a 41 inch log that’d be pretty awkward to press.

I thought I’d shoot my shot.

Anything less makes no sense to me, if you want to stay close to or actually do strongman. Although I think I remember that @T3hPwnisher had a smaller one in comp once and said that lower weight classes and women have smaller ones in competition at times. Where I compete it’s actually very standardized. We all (including women) use the same logs every competition with the exemption of the pro’s in the first league, which use the giant wooden log known from the FIBO competitions.

Ye I’ve pressed a 13 inch before and that’s my understanding too it’s kinda the comp standard give or take. Dabbling in strongman is a future thing for me so will be plenty of time by then gyms will open again with access to everything hopefully

It’s the total wild west here, haha. 12" is “the standard”, but it really just depends on what the promoter has on hand.

U reckon it’d be better to train a bit too big and compete bit smaller or train smaller and compete bigger?

My philosophy: strongman is about showing up strong, not good. Events will change the day OF the competition, sometimes even in the middle of the event. No point trying to game the system: train with what you have, get strong on that, beat people that aren’t as strong.

A bigger log is definitely harder to press so you will have an easier time with a smaller one if you are used to the bigger one. That said, the clean is easier with a bigger log.

Maybe i’ll hit a bit of everything. Sooner or later ill have access to a bunch of sizes anyways

weird brag.

Yeah sounds like a solid plan. Getting stronger across the board can’t hurt.

Ye when gyms open up again there’s a strongman/powerlifting gym I go to when I’m there with all the things. I’m gonna be in more regional/rural areas for a while so probably won’t visit super often.

My legs were pretty tired going into this. I am just not really efficiently recovered all over. Sleep and the step counts these mornings is crazy. I made a joke about me having to do an internship because of the nursing emergency but today was the best example of this being actually true. We were on shift with 2 nurses and the intern with 1 week of experience (me). Normally there have to be 4 trained nurses per shift! That’s not a lot for the amount of patients and the ampunt of care those patients need in our department.

1 paused log lift (clean once, dip and pause for 2 sec; 10 sets of 3 with 80-90 kg)
2 x 3 @ 81 kg
2 x 3 @ 86 kg
6 x 3 @ 91 kg

2 paused front squats
3 x 6 @ 100 kg

  • got cramps in both me biceps. Quads = toast. I mean 6 reps AND pauses?!

3 pull ups
8 x 2

Notes:

  • Paul’s answer to my breathing question was: ‘breath-lift-breath-clean-breath-press’
  • I switched to heeled shoes on set 3 or so and I think that makes a lot of sense so far because it felt like I had troubles staying on my heels on the dip, which is easier with lifters.
  • paused log presses are quite evil. Ever tried them, @strongmanvinny2 ?
  • played A LOT with technique today. My main issue is the dip. The drive is fine but I don’t feel like I can get in an optimal position to initiate the drive from. I watched some of Paul’s videos in which he does power jerks and he has much less forward knee travel than me. I tried to copy that in my last couple of sets but I couldn’t really make that work for me.
  • legs were cramping up bad after squats. Maybe some dehydration today?
  • this was hard but good work today. Pulls ups absolutely fucked me up because lats were already fried from the log and bicepses were depleated too, probably from last pull up session, haha.

Your internship sounds hard, but in a good way, challenging and different? I know it’s not what you’re training for but are you enjoying the exposure?

On a different note entirely my TRT provider say in the website they do Europe, not sure how possible it is but if you’re happy for me to I’ll make an enquiry?

It’s challenging in a way. I mean I’m not the most entitled person or whatever but helping geriatric persons with hygiene and such was not on my bucket list tbh. Intellectually what I do is not challenging at all and physically it’s the sleep issue and maybe the amount of walking that impede recovery. It’s more about empathy and caring than brains or muscles but for me personally it is a little challenging indeed.

Definitely! I mean asking can’t hurt, right?
