Patch2's Adventures

Sat
AM
I woke up just wrecked from the hike. My whole body was sore. Apparently you work your abs while trying to stay upright. So, I just did yoga. My girl’s back and it was a great class, just what I needed.

I think I’m going to have an intention for every class other than ‘get through class.’ You know something to work on during that specific class. Sat I went with keeping my core tight, since it was making its presence known. Overall good class!

Sun

I went to Chicago, hit a lot of stores and tried on packs. The winner is REI’s Crestrail 65 http://www.rei.com/product/809763/rei-crestrail-65-pack-womens I really liked it. I didn’t get it though, I think I’ll shop around a bit for it, see if I can get a discount or something. I also learned that outdoor gear has NO vanity sizing. It’s all based on actual inches of body parts, and apparently outdoorsy women are pretty small. I bought one pair of pants that turn into shorts, but I’m not buying clothing until I lean out to the point where I want to be.

AM
Ugh, I slept. It’s the first time I’ve missed an AM workout due to sleep. I feel bad about it.

Patch, I have issues with everything, mostly down to lever lengths. Essentially it’s because my hips are wide, so my femurs hang in at a pronounced angle, and then my lower legs jut out from my knees at an angle and my ankles therefore get a lot of stress. My right foot is rotated outward. I also have a very long back. My femurs are also quite long but my shins are short so I cannot get my feet under my bum when I squat down. I am simply not built to squat. Add on top of that the fact I’ve spent over 20 years at a desk and have short hip flexors and a slightly kyphotic T-spine and you have a disaster in the making.
You’ve been lifting for a while though, so that must help, right?

The hammocks were great to sleep in. I have to get me one. They’re really light, and when it rained the tents were much wetter.
ohgodohgod! I totally want one of these for backpacking. Couple that with the fact that you are a martial artist and have the same goals I do and I just became your biggest fan. I’m checking back to PW just to see your progress. :*

A fan? Woo hoo!

Do you have experience backpacking? It’s a whole new world to me.

those dunes look brutal. I’m sure you had to take 2 steps for every one step one a regular hill due to slipping.
cudos on getting it done. I’d sat you have a BAMF state of mind.
It was ridiculous! Going down was pretty awesome. You’d take a step, slide about 2 steps worth then take the next step.

I made it through the whole thing, which feels BAMFy, but I did not take it like a badass. There was no challenge accepted face, and I feel bad about that. For the last two dunes, I struggled through every freaking step. I literally had to stop and pep talk myself and catch my breath every few feet. I’m realizing that a lot of becoming a badass is going to be mental.

you live in a beautiful area!
I know! I plan on seeing all of it, and hopefully sharing shots of it with you guys.

Here’s one I took in Chicago yesterday to contrast all the nature.

Hike sounded great.

I love the part of London where I am too - there’s a lot of greenspace so although it’s very urban, I can escape to the little pocket of countryside up the road, pick blackberries, walk among the trees and watch the squirrels. It’s good for the soul.

Regarding your question, I’ve been lifting around 25 years. However, I avoided squatting for most of that - I’ve really only squatted and deadlifted with any seriousness for the past four or five years. True story.

Do you walk like that in the sand so you don’t attract worms? Sorry if that sounded funny, Dune reference there.

I see you are one of those early morning people, hmmm, just when I was planning on moving in with you since you have all those lovely places to walk, hike & run.

You cant hike in Texas right now, you will die from the heat.

Warm up
Squat
45x5 65x5 85x5 105x2x5 105x4 105x5
Man, I failed on that very last squat attempt. I went down and something shifted weird and I ened up dumping the bar. I now know that the safety rails work and are at the correct height for me, though the bar did catch on my pony tail. Lets hope that was a one time deal.

BB Press
45x5 50x2x5 55x5
Yipee for the 55! Have just those tiny little 2.5 plates on the bar feels ridiculous. The clips hit the ground before the plates. Hopefully they’ll soon be a thing of the past.

Clean
50x3x5
I took out the warm up sets for this, I clean the bar up for presses, so I don’t think it’s necessary. Still working on wrist flexibility for this guy.

Then I rucked! I filled up a backpack with 30lbs (6 textbooks, think about kids having to haul these things around) and explored suburbia for 3 miles. It took about an hour. I need to eventually work up to 45lbs in a better pack (I just used a backpack for this) for 10 miles on a trail.

Do you know what feels awesome?

Taking 30lbs off your back after an hour!

Tuesday
AM Spin
PM 5k Rowing took 26min

Wends
AM Yoga

I live in a pocket of suburbia surrounded by farms and trees. It takes about 2 hrs to get to the city, but I’m pretty used to driving a lot. The pretty views and nature are good for the soul. Glad you enjoy it.

Yeah, I’m really glad I found T-Nation early into my lifting life. I don’t have that many bad habits, and have been doing some sort of squat from the get go.

I had to google Dune, some sort of movie/book?

I’ve never considered myself an early morning person. It’s just the best time for fasted cardio, so 5am it is.

That’s why I’m going north!

I’ve got a trip planned guys! My first backcountry backpacking trip. We’re driving up Friday and spending the weekend at pictured rocks in the UP. Trip is planned for Sept 9-11th. I am so excited!

Only one of the greatest writers! That is if ya like Sci Fi, but his books are much more than that.

Uh yeah and 5am = early morning person. I may have to get up to pee that time or years previous I’d be going to bed that time.

We all grow up some time, nothing wrong with being early morning. Get in get the workout done for the day, eat all morning for post workout meal. Only thing is you have to go to bed at decent hour.

Yeah nothing wrong with being an early person at all, especially since it will spare Patch of me moving in with her, love farms (or well the fresh food from farms) and trees. Although if I can find where I parked my jet I might join ya for that Sept trip, that looks amazing and they have diving.

Never been a morning person, even as a baby I always let my mother sleep through the mornings, she said I was the bestests baby out all of us. I could try to change my body clock rhythms of a good few decades I suppose, but “growing up” I’ve learned to pick my battles.
