Patch2's Adventures 2

Thurs Afternoon

CW Circuit

4 rounds
R. Hyper x 12 - 2 second hold at top
Band Pull down x 12
Single Leg Glute Bridge x 12 - 2 second hold at top
15 lb Neutral Grip MP x 12
R. Crunch

10 min on the rower doing 15 sec as fast as possible and 45 min recovery. I got 2000m in.

Fri AM

Spin - I didn’t spin all week so I picked it over bootcamp. It was nice to take a class with someone different. She kept telling us to keep our heels down. I hadn’t even thought about that, it makes a world of difference and my toes didn’t go numb!

PM - I thought about going to the gym, instead took a nap and went to a movie.

An efficient runner has very little up and down movement (you don’t see the top of their head bobbing up and down) or rotational. These movements are leaks for energy that could be used to move forward.
Makes sense. I’ve always wondered about this when doing cardio. They say the same thing in spin. I’m doing it to waste energy, so shouldn’t I want to be inefficient?

Thanks

I’s starting to think there’s nothing git hasn’t done in a past life.

Googled pose running, but it all seems to be about feets, I’ll look for arm stuff.

I hadn’t even paid attention to my traps until you pointed them out in tvix, thanks!

Patch, it does sound like your upper body is very active when you run. If the DOMSy feeling eventually goes away, and you are OK with your speed v. effort, then there probably isn’t alot of reason to change it up. Indeed, git is right and “good running form” would dictate as follows:

"The problem: Some runners swing their arms side-to-side, which makes you more likely to slouch and not breathe as efficiently. Some beginners have a tendency to hold their hands way up by their chest, especially as they get tired. You’ll actually get more tired by holding your arms that way and you’ll start to feel tightness and tension in your shoulders and neck.

The solution: Try to keep your hands at waist level, right about where they might lightly brush your hip. Your arms should be at a 90 degree angle, with your elbows at your sides. You should rotate your arms at the shoulder (not at the elbow), so they’re swinging back and forth.

Imagine a vertical line splitting your body in half – your hands should not cross it. Keep your posture straight and erect. Your head should be up, your back straight, and shoulders level. When you’re tired at the end of your run, it’s common to slump over a little, which can lead to neck, shoulder, and lower-back pain. When you feel yourself slouching, poke your chest out."
Oh, Kimba, thank you for this! I’m pretty content with my speed vs effort right now, but I will pay more attention to my upper body positioning.

I’m really glad I posted about the weird sore, I learn so much from you guys. There’s so much I don’t know that I don’t know!

Well, that’s one of the problems with steady state, distance running to burn calories. The better, lighter and more efficient (meaning reduced muscle involvement) you get at it, the fewer calories you will burn. So, you need to go farther and longer to burn the same amount.

Sprints and hills largely solve the problem.

Patch: You’re making great progress with the running. 2 miles in 18 minutes is amazing! Sounds like you’ve gotten some good advice about your weird soreness. I’m not sure what’s up with that.

Re steady state and weight loss–I’ll say this–it’s not always about the numbers–how many calories will you burn doing x, y, z. SOmetimes it’s about the feeling. When I run for 20 minutes or more it makes me feel good. And when I feel good about my body I take better care of it. I eat better. I stretch more. I do things that keep me able to keep doing what makes me feel good.

ANd YOu’re always going to burn more calories running than not running. Doing something is better than doing nothing.

Sat:

I slept, and then I think my body assumed that sleeping for 8 hours meant I was dead and it started to fall apart. I woke up feeling old and broken. So, yeah, missed yoga. I did go to the gym, but didn’t do much. Spent some time rolling around on the foam roller, did the running yoga flow. I thought about doing some inverted rows and push-ups supersetted but the smith machine was being used, for squats of course. I did do push ups off the bench 5x6, but my wrist decided that being a part of my body was too much for it and it was going to revolt. I decided to just listen to my body and came home.

Ah, so the key is to first figure out why I’m running. I’d like to be able to easily run three miles in a reasonable amount of time. I think any badass should be able to just pick up and run a 5k. I don’t plan on running more than 3-4 miles. So maybe once I’m efficient at that, I’ll think about sprints and hills.

Thanks, good to know runners are thinking my running is coming along.

You make a really good point here. I feel awesome about my 2 miles, it really does make the whole day better. I’ll worry about weight loss when 3 miles feels like nothing.

Exactly!

BJJ today! I’ll write a novella about it tomorrow, but it was awesome.

I went in kinda cranky. Three hours later came out all giggles!

Really people, it’s way cheaper than therapy.

Ur doing bomb on the running!

I saw your post on G+. What color belt are you? How many levels above you is a blue belt?

A Hal sighting in my log? Oh my, I believe I have the vapors.

I’m a blue belt too, so that’s what’s nice. Even though I haven’t rolled in a year or so, I can still hold my own against a guy that has my same skill level. He picked me up trying to get out of my guard and I still took him down and tapped him!

Peaches finally some BJJ

I want to read the book pls
Blue belt is the first belt that counts that lets you roll or take any of the advanced classes

No rolling in well over a year here too
Sigh

I thought this was another date story…

I saw the post on g+ but don’t know enough about the sport to make an intelligent contribution. Congrats are in order. Are you going to fight on a regular basis?

james

Horrahh for your post BJJ high! Sounds like that made up for your not so pumped up Saturday.
I’ll still probably have no idea what you’re talking about when your write about it though, ha.

TAKE CARE!

actively considering taking up bjj just for the action

I know it’s not quite the same thing, but with you kicking bjj ass. I thought i’d post ninja cat.

just some lulz for you.

Keep up the solid work.

That kitten thing is freaky!

Glad you had a good train, Lula. Sounds like a blast.

I’m wearing my sparkly shirt again, so I thought I’d take a picture to compare to when I first got it. The pic on the left is Nov 29th and right is today. I can definitely see a difference in my waist. I’ve only lost 3 lbs since then, lol.

I will novella soon, I wanted to post a pic and that can’t happen off the phone. WTF iPhone?

I think being a blue belt puts me in a good place. I learned enough from a good coach to not hurt myself or get hurt, and I know the basics, so now it’s just about refining basics and add fancy stuff. I need a little less instruction which is what makes a blue belt instructor ok, and makes rolling with people I don’t know ok.

Lol, BJJ does lend itself to a bunch of sexy time jokes. Naked it would be sex. I think sex is why women are better at holding mount usually.

I’m aiming for every sunday. So not that much, but enough to keep the connections in my brain alive.

Do you think that sex between two BJJers would naturally incorporate some BJJ moves?
Serious question

It really did!

It’s ok, I’m not really expecting people other than maybe Kev to get much out of the BJJ posts other than Yipee!
Hallowed wrote:

I actually went to class really pissy about men in general yesterday. I know I said I was going to be nicer and flirt back but, everyday, every single day of last week I was approached by a random due with a pick up line with the theme of - Huh, you’re not white, but you’re not black either, I’m confused. I know it’s well intentioned, but it bothers me so much.

I was getting gas right before class and dude walks up to me and say’s oh you look indian, then starts speaking in not English. There are about 347 different dialects in India, I have no idea what he was saying, I barely understand 4 of them. Am I being irrational? Is race an acceptable open? I would never go up to a white guy and be like huh, you’re white, what’s that like?

Oh, and Hal, I don’t think you’d be into BJJ boys, they tend to be short and compact. Think wrestlers.

My thoughts exactly!

You confused me with Lula, that’s an awesome compliment! Have you seen her numbers? Woo!
