Palumboism - Causes and Case Studies

Ok friends! and what you think that is the solution for this problem.

I don’t know if I have a solution, but I have a prevention: don’t use high doses of drugs for long periods of time.

it is certainly great advice

Yeah, while I doubt there is a real “cure” to such situations, but it is hard to argue the PEDs having some impact when you compare with older generation IFBB pros. The older champs still train (I’m pretty sure), albeit in their heyday they didn’t come anywhere close to the choices and dosages used by some competitors these days.

Totally unprovable, but hard to just ignore I suppose.

Kamali never really had much of an asthetic physique IMO. Sure he somewhat reflected the ‘look’ of the times, but certainly a never a threat to the guys placing at the Olympia.

I still think the other factors I mentioned earlier play a role.

But it’s hard to dispute the old school guys didn’t show such dramatic symptoms (or any symptoms). For example, I haven’t run across a photo of Zane or Nubret in their late 40s to 50s looking palumboish.

Which points to something I forgot to mention in my earlier posts.

What was on a typical drug menu used by the old school guys and what was on the typical drug menu by the later generation? I’m not enough of a bb historian but here’s a premise:

  1. Find the bb’ers who exhibit blatant palumboism features

  2. Date back to when they were in their competitive prime

  3. Cross reference with the most popular drugs used by guys around that time

This might help narrow down which drugs have a higher probability to contribute to this look.

Then add things like repeat trauma, scar tissue, better protein synthesis provided by drugs, and time.

Thanks for the info.

Its not the drugs doing this. overuse .

Lol why did u have to mention nigeria, ehn [/quote]
Lol, I know that happens, and there is no bank of nigeria
Nothing against Nigeria. But for years there was a spate of phishing emails saying that a Nigerian heiress had passed away and XXXXX from the Bank of Nigeria, would send you the money if you would transfer $5k to cover expenses. So that was my reference

Can you show a natural bodybuilder who has Palumboism, which is supposedly caused by overuse?

Derp overuse of drugs yes

Yeah I’d add another vote for it being the drugs, there’s lots of 40+ guys at my gym with nice physiques who are natural or on lower dose AAS and I have never seen palumboism.

Victor Martinez with Stage I Palumboism.

Am I the only one that thinks Luimarco is a douche?

Many think he is. I don’t.

jim morris has looked great his whole life and has admitted to using steroids for his entire competitive career

have to think it’s the igf-1 maybe the mega doses of steroids, today they take at least 10 times higher doses as they did back in the 70’s.

Natural bodybuilders simply do not get palumboism, bodybuilders who only use relatively small amounts steroids do not get palumboism.

I’ve watched the luimarco videos, done my internet research at various sites, and read this entire thread. . . so. . .that makes me a current expert on Palumboism.

Agree with many of the points made here. Just to add, don’t steroids cause visceral fat to collect around the intestines? Doesn’t GH cause EVERYTHING in your body to grow–intestines etc. Add to this the incredible amount of food these guys eat and their guts are always full of shit.

That could explain the gut. . .

But what about the arms shrinking? Is that caused by the repetitive exercises? I can see how this makes some sense as nerve damage could be a factor. . .but maybe the guys in the pics are just really low on carbs because they are cutting for competition. Low carbs can cause one to look like “you don’t even lift bro”.

Some of this is explained by the trunk of the body getting thicker to accommodate more muscle mass. Obliques are going to get nasty large eventually I guess when you are gaining everywhere else. Some will be genetic too. But this still doesn’t explain the great abdominal vacuums achieved by the old school body builders vs. some of these new age gut freaks.

I think drugs are the largest factor. It stands to reason that as your body grows accustomed to years and years of PED abuse you are going to start experiencing fatigue in the ability of the organs to pump muscles full of blood and nutrients to get that full muscle effect. Eventually the body must look at other ways to dispose of excess PED’s in the system–gut and visceral fat, and this will cause some shrinkage in the arms and legs. Skin health is directly related to liver and kidney health–so I imagine the skin changes in these guys is not a healthy thing either.

Interesting phenomenon. Like others I think there are several factors at work here to create a good ol’ palumbo bad ass physique.

  1. Drugs
  2. Organ fatigue
  3. Genetic abnormalities that may make it more noticeable
  4. Nerve damage from repetitive lifting

Some outliers:
5. Low carbs (??)
6. Too much shit in the guts from eating too much

Either way it looks retarded. I’d rather be natty and not have to worry about that crap.

This is a modern phenomen so I can only expect it is not to do with steroids but with prolonged exposure to one of the other hormones in use; insulin, HGH IGF or something.
As we know hormones dictate the shape of our bodies and clearly these guys have seriously altered the balance of their hormones in a harmful way.

Tony Pearson - making a comeback at 57 - the former Mr Universe made the vacuum pose his own - looks like he’s still got it !

From what i’ve seen/read i believe palumboism is cause from a combination of prolonged use of high doses of hgh and insulin
