Palumboism - Causes and Case Studies

? Unless we know the injuries sustained and how that affected that person’s own training, it isn’t about whether all older guys look like that.

Ronnie used to lift Volkswagons. I am amazed he looks anything like that right now.

I have a back injury. I am just now lifting like I was last year. If anyone had taken a pic of my back three months after the accident, it wouldn’t exactly show “optimal growth”.

Nope.

That’s called “getting old and having more injuries than you can count on all your fingers and toes.”
Not every old guy looks like that and not every old ex competitor, who have also delt with injurie, looks like that so there is definitely more to it than old age and injuries.

But I do agree that it is partially attributed to the aging process.
Alas, but Ronnie

1- he doesn’t train anymore

2- he doesn’t eat the same away anymore

3- he doesn’t care for any of this

4- He doesn’t have the money to support any decent kind of shape

while “every other ex-bber”:

1- still train

2- still eat in a good fashion

3- still care about how they look

4- have ways to pay for their TRT and anti-aging (hgh) therapy to look good and healthy into their 60’s

isn’t the distended stomach + cro-mag skull look mainly due to HGH? The differences between IFBB pros a couple decades ago vs now would make sense, considering HGH starting being used around the late 80s.

I don’t think it’s very debatable Ronnie’s current look is mainly due to the fact that he’s lost muscle, but still has the enlarged organs.

? There has actually been a drastic decrease in the “gh bellies” lately which would imply it wasn’t the GH to start with. The most likely culprit is unmanaged insulin use and a huge food intake.

The physiques of the early 00’s are what most people are using. I don’t see that much at all in the top ten today.

Tony Freeman sure as hell doesn’t have it. neither did Melvin Anthony.

Also, what Kai Greene has isn’t something I would label “Gh gut”. He’s just a short guy with a very tightly packed frame with 15 tons of muscle hanging on it. If his waist was actually really tiny, I am sure the first Las Vegas sandstorm would break him in half.

Also, seeing how he used to eat, I am sure he was waiting for the day he could quit doing that shit. Eating was a full time job for him. Grits may be tasty, but damn, eating a cake mix bowl full everyday with a pound of cheese and eggs has GOT to get old.

you can definitely see changes in the facial structure like jaw growth though. Obviously people look different as they age but jaws don’t tend to get bigger.

That depends. Mine is. My jaw grew with the rest of me. I see with most guys. very rarely do you see a big guy with a really skinny face. The jaw muscles grow as well.

what “insulin” are they taking? I hear IGF-1 mentioned in these threads, which might explain the bone growth as well. Synthetic insulin would not lead to any of the skull growth that we’re seeing on the same pros with the distended abdominals.

Who is diagnosing “skull growth”? I see two guys, Nasser and Jay, who appear to show some sign of acromegaly but not many others.

It is amazing how everyone graduated from Tv’s ER when it comes to bodybuilding.

Oh yeah I agree with that, but these guys are smaller than they used to be with bigger jaws. Smells fishy to me. I could be wrong, and I hope I am.

There is still something just not right about the appearance of those guys.

Old age takes on a familiar pattern (and some of it IS that). But Palumboism has certain other disfigurements that don’t appear until very advanced age.

Call it what you like, whatever drugs these guys indulged in (in large quantities) seems to have accelerated the aging process.

growth hormone is the suspected culprit, not insulin. Insulin is being blamed for other problems…

that’s what it comes down to I think. There’s just something weird about them and it’s not just a result of getting older.

At least I hope it’s not! I don’t want my face to look like an ape and my skin to go all waxy and my gut to bloat and my limbs wither! Aarh!

Almost all of this^^ is your opinion/speculation.

Like I said before, this look is obviously due in part to the aging process BUT to say that years/decades of steroid abuse isn’t the main culprit is laughable.

Coleman’s calves look terribly deformed.

The usual signs of old age are atrophy, not a disfigurement of a muscle.

I know he’s been teasing us with occasional talk of coming out of retirement, but that would be a huge mistake on multiple levels.

Just a question…but what do you think years of tanning will do to you?

I know guys who literally live at Darque tan. If they look 50 @ 35, that’s why.

Which part am I speculating ?

Yates is considered by most an abuser.
Go look at his pic a few pages and answer me, does he have Palumbolism ?

I’m not saying it isn’t due to abuse but some of this accusations are getting stupid, Coleman is old and has his share of injuries and health problems, he isn’t training (not at least beyong the “longevity” realm), yet people here are comparing him to Palumbo ? People are just throwing names here. I’m questioning the stupidity of the thread and some posts, not that drug abuse will fuck you up.

I don’t even know why I still care.

No need to be rude, if you didn’t know the answer you could’ve just kept quiet. I’m seeing a lot of guys besides Nasser and Jay with cro-magnon like skulls.
and I hope to be an ER doctor soon, let’s hope I do well on these boards…

ah ok, are insulin and GH the main reasons current pros are also carrying more muscle than pros did a couple of decades ago?
