90 lb OHP for 2 reps?! Beast!! I love it!
Thanks RB, I have been really aggressive with my overhead press. My goal is to press 100lbs by June 1st.
Deadlift day. I did some sub-maximal singles and doubles. When it comes to deadlifting, I am much worse at working closer to my max than I am with squats. I can rep out 11 deadlifts at 200lbs, while I can only do 9 reps of squats @ 200lbs. BUT I have tested a squat 1RM at 240lbs, while I have never been able to deadlift more than 225lbs. Which I know, is weird and ridiculous… I have no idea why this is, but I am definitely going to be more aggressive about getting my deadlift up, training with heavier weights and lower reps.
Training 3/29/2010
SQUATS- speed work
135x3x10
DEADS
135x5
185x3
205x2
215x2
225x1
235-fail
225x1
215x2x3
225 is still a decent lift Owlie! Maybe if you taped your deads the pros around here could give you a few pointers?
cheers
N
Owlie, I have a similar issue going on with all my lifts. Can do reps at say, 80 on bench. But struggle to get a single out at 85. What’s up with that?, we wonder.
Try 230 next time. Two little tiny plates moar – you won’t even notice them.
Yeah I should have tried 230lb…I dunno what I was thinking. I’ll video tape my deadlifts next Monday for inspection.
You have short arms, right Owlie? That may be why your DL is more challenging. Are you sumo or conventional?
I think deadlift is such a mental lift. Not that the others aren’t, but there’s something different about deadlifting. You either believe you can pick up the bar or you don’t.
Kimba, I have a similar experience with bench. Can do reps at x weight and then add a few pounds and can barely press a single. Damn frustrating. Of course, that was back in the day of benching (sniff, sniff).

Soooo true!
Keep working at it Owlie, I’m sure that 225+ deadlift isn’t far away.
Thanks for the encouragment RBlue! I intend on being really aggressive with my deadlift from this point forward.

I do have short arms but not relative to my height, so while I’m not advantaged at deadlifting as I am with squats with my short leg/long torso combo, I don’t think I’m disadvantaged either. I couldn’t agree more that deadlift is the most dependent on will power of all the big lifts. I need to work on building confidence with the heavier weights. I pull conventional.
have you ever tried mixed grip? I was able to add a few pounds that way myself.
Does anyone pull heavy without a mixed grip?
for my warm up sets I do…but 135 doesn’t feel heavy anymore…I can pull overhand until about 185…I think it’s good for grip…
I do all my warm up sets overhand and then mix my grip for my working sets
Today was a bench day…
BENCH
barx8
95x5
115x3
130x3x6
130x(2+2)*
*I failed my 3rd rep so I cluster fucked it
DIPS
12/9/9-I can’t do weighted dips after these heavy bench days. My triceps just fail on the lockout. I’m working on that with my closegrip bench day though…
dumbbell rows
60x8x3
60lbs DB rows = awesome Owlie. serious stuff.
Still, nice dips Owlie! And 60 lb DB rows?! Awesome work girl.
Slight hijack–I don’t feel comfortable with a mixed grip when going heavy. I go double overhand with a hook grip for my deads.
That bench is looking fine!
I think I’d suffer grip issues if I double overhanded it. Hook grip: is that minus the pinkies?

Snapper, since I can’t quite explain a hook grip, here is a picture.
It does hurt the thumbs for the first little while, but then you get used to it.
Ahh, yes. My powerlifting coach was trying to get me to do that for some lift. And the benefit is?
I ate 10000000000000000000000000000000000mg of sodium this weekend
I can barely roll over in bed I’m so bloated
4/2/10-mediocre squat day
SQUATS
barxshit
135x5
183x3
205x5x3
I was having one of those days where my form is completely off. It happens periodically with squats. I need to change some shit and maybe squat 3xweek again because I was not getting my knees out of the bottom like I should and I was on my toes bad on the drive up for some reps ugh…sigh Sometimes I think I need corporal punishment to keep my squat form in check.
155x8x5
Goodmornings and shit
4/3/2010-Pretty good overhead press day

I am using my damn scale again for every meal and am going to log everything because it seems I have calorie amnesia. Plus it was 20 bucks.
