It doesn’t affect my lower body at all, even though my back squat is very weak. Shoulder strength is the limiting factor.[/quote]
When you say shoulder strength, do you mean you have difficulty keeping your arms straight? or that you have difficulty keeping the groove so you don’t lose the bar to the front or rear?
If you have difficulty keeping your arms straight, you properly aren’t positioning the bar properly, or have too narrow a grip.
Overhead squating will have a secondary effect on leg hypertrophy in that it will make you a better front and back squater. If you get good at overhead squating (i.e. body weight for reps) you WILL have better ROM and a stronger core. These gains will allow you to move more weight in the front and back squat=hypertrophy of quads. In addition, your traps, spinal erectors, calves and hamstings will benefit greatly as well.
I overhead squat (OHS) before every workout. From just a PVC tube if I have OHS in the workout to 125x15 if I have no OHS in the workout. They serve as an excellent warm-up (warning: first sets of OHS can be uncomfortable).
Presently, I am working on being able to do 15 reps with bodyweight (210-215). My best for a double is 265 my best for 15 is 180.
Most I have OHS is 195lbs @190 bw. I haven’t tried to max on it, but after failing to snatch the 195 once, I OHS it after successfully snatching it just to show the weight who’s boss. ahahah
Jeeze, stop with all this fancy shit and load up that bar for gods sake! Everyone is ALWAYS trying to think of things to get out of squats! Some of these exersizes are what they do in the toning classes for women! Be a man, and get under some iron and squat that shit the right way!

Are you saying that overhead squats are “fancy shit”? Dan John, are you reading? Your workouts are too fancy. You need to get back to basics.
Tell it to Dan John. When you can put up the same numbers as him, I’ll be reading your articles on T-Nation. Until then blow it out your ass.

Hahhaha… Yea you’d think Dan John would have learned that by now
Overhead squats will tell you very quickly where you are weak.
for that I am grateful. They’re the key reason I’m getting strong everywhere, not just the OHSquats themselves but because I addressed every weakness I found associated with them.
