Overhead Squat

Make sure to stretch your calves because a tight calve also causes the heels to come up.

Ok guys I’ll just post a video of me snatching as much as I can and you can tell me where/if I’m doing anything wrong

I will agree and say - that the OH squat is not the best choice for developing the snatch.
the variations of snatch pulls, hang or power snatches, and snatching of blocks will give better bang for buck

that being said OH squat is my number one diagnostic tool
I use them every time I squat or deadlift. ( or pulls or cleans)
I can tell within a few sets if I am ready to squat/deadlift
or do I need to go back and do more mobility work first

OH sqauts - are great for learning squat mechanics
how to keep a tight core
an upright posture
to initiate the squat via the glutes and hips

if I cant get realitively light weights for ten I need to do other work first.

what kind of foam/pvc work and mobility work do you do?
most hip and knee issues start at the ankle or the glutes.
incorporating some mobility work into your warm up will do more then static stretching

Before each workout I foam roll my, Quads, Hams, IT Band, Calves, Glutes/Piriformis, Upper and Lower Back.
I statically stretch my hip flexors, quads and Hams after that, and then Jump rope for 3-5ish minutes and then jump straight into the workout

Do you do leg windmills?! Best exercise for hamd/ quads imo.

hit 100kg/225 last night.

I feel these would be easier by not having to press the weight up but meh.

Thats what im doing.

What i mean is it would be easier to take it out of the rack in the snatch/overhead positions.

jerksing with the weight in the snatch grip is horrible on my gay elbows.

Make sure you know how to “pack” your shoulders so the weight of the barbell doesn’t sit on your elbows. You want to pull your scapula down and pull the bar apart.

A good warm-up to teach how to “pack” your shoulder is waiter’s walk. Tony Gentilcore has a good video of it:

Cool bit of info. I never really thought of doing anything like this? But I may or may not do it naturally? I only stuff after OLifting so I’ll be warmed up already.

More dips, pull ups and military press for you!

I find that doing drop snatches translates better to the actual lift than OHS. Like it’s been mentioned before OHS is good if you’re new to OL but you can soon move past that. What I like to do after taking a break from OL is do a few sets of drop sn before my full snatch. My catch feels much tighter and more stable since I’ve just finished concentrating on specifically punching the bar up into a lockout as I drop underneath it and keeping the constant tension on it (basically think about ripping the bar in half) on the way up.

I found that this paid off in spades when my snatches got up above 95-100 kgs because I couldn’t afford to get lazy and just sort of balance the weight above me as I stood. But I think that after you learn the mentality of attacking the bar you can phase these out, too.

I looked for your answer to the question of whether you had OL shoes or not but didn’t see it. If you don’t and are serious about taking up this sport I’d highly recommend it. You’ll never want to squat or do full - or abbreviated variations - lifts in anything else but those shoes again after you try them for a few sessions. In a pinch I’ve recommended my athletes just wear work boots with a solid heel on them. Having that bulk on the heel makes all the difference in stability. You’ll feel like your feet are a foot wide with those (OL shoes especially!).

Good luck to you mate, keep up the good work!

Sorry about ^
I was going to write underneath that:
I do not have Oly lifting shoes because I am not looking to pursue olympic lifting as I am a basketball player and was just trying to increase my vertical jump.
I have decided to ditch the olympic lifts until I find a coach and just to stick to my squats and deads and incorporating plyos when i get stronger

I appreciate all the responses from the forum

Traditional squat for me.
