Good lookin out bro. I’ve heard of steel but the word is that there are a lot of gays at that gym and it’s in Chelsea which is like the gay capital of NYC.

It is, but just because they are gay don’t make them bad people. As long as they were not overly flaming I wouldn’t gay if the liked penis.

That’s true but I prefer to not surround myself around that environment because I’ve had gay dudes stare at me before on many occasions as if they were undressing me and it makes me very uncomfortable.

Okay, so I’ve narrowed by choices down to two gyms in NYC. I need a gym that allows me to workout in the morning because I have school in the evening and night. The gym you go to (new york combat sambo) only offers 1 grappling class in the morning on Tuesday and two sambo classes in the morning on Wednesday and Thursday. Saturday looks good but all the MMA and Wrestling classes are offered at night which sucks because I can’t make it. Not sure if it will be worth it but sounds like a great gym based on reviews and videos I’ve seen about the owner.

I am leaning more towards Five Points Academy because they offer striking, Judo, BJJ, and they have a full equipped weight lifting area (squat rack, etc.) which is great since I lift, too. They offer Muay Thai in the morning, too. And they have classes from 8AM until like 8:30PM Mondays through Friday and are open on Saturday and Sunday from like 9AM-3PM. The downside is that they do not offer MMA. They charge $240 per month for unlimited access with no contract and $200 per month unlimited access with a contract. How are they prices at your gym? I’m not asking you to disclose how much your gym charges because it’s probably a little disrespectful to the owner but if you can shed some light into how it compares to the price at Five Points Academy, that would be great.

Do you think Krav Maga is legit for self-defense in a street fighting situation? NYC has a few with good reviews on yelp. My goal as I’ve mentioned before is to be able to defend myself very well on the street and compete in a few tournaments (Muay Thai or MMA).

5 points has very good MT. I see a lot of guys at fights and they usually do well. Jesse Handler fights for them and he’s a beast.

The thing about 5 points and a lot of other school is they offer different martial arts its still not MMA. MMA is all about the transitions, you think its a boxing match and that’s when he goes for a takedown. Or you think it’s grappling time and than he punches you. It fucks up a lot of people to get hit when they think it’s grapple time. So with saying that, any school that does not have a set MMA class, where you drill transitions, the school is going to be lacking. And if you compete in MMA it will hurt you. However separate classes are much better if you want to compete in single martial arts. I can only seem to pass guard when I’m striking, works great for MMA, but grappling it hurts me.

As for price that’s a little more expensive than my schools. Less than 50 bucks difference. MMA is an expensive sport and NYC is an expensive place combined it sucks a poor fighter dry.

No, I do not think krav maga is legit for self-defense in a street fighting situation. My buddy I do sambo with joined krac maga NYC because with a change in is work schedule it worked out being able to train more there. So he’s there for about a 6 months (he’s still a white belt btw) and he routinely takes every one in the class down and submits them, instructors included. So much so he now teaches class for them. When you have a guy who’s a white belt wiping out your coaches something is very wrong with your system.

Another thing KM teaches you what to do against untrained people. Every thing works against untrained people. You don’t need to train to bite some one, or eye gouge eye or nut shot or whatever non skill moves they teach. I worry about fighting people who know how to fight. Like a D1 wrestler, who’s going to pick me up and slam me to the concrete. That’s a dangerous man, and you better learn some take down defense or it will be a long night in the hospital.

But what about weapons? What about them? If someone pulls a knife, run. I don’t care who you are. Some one pulls a knife on you, you are going to loss that fight. So run, throw you money one way and run the other. Dying is not worth the 50 bucks I have on me.

Those are some good points that I did not think about regarding transitioning to MMA. I like the Sambo gym; however, do you know if they are going to add a striking component soon? I looked at your gyms schedule again and it looks like I would be able to make the following classes: Tuesday morning Grappling, Wednesday morning Sambo, Thursday morning Combat Sambo and Thursday night Wrestling, Friday night?s MMA class, and all of Sunday?s classes: Combat Sambo, Sambo, and Grappling. Only thing is that I would only be able to do 1 MMA class at your gym. Would be nice if your gym had more MMA classes and more variety in the morning classes, otherwise, looks like a good place. I see some students compete and do well. Do you think if I decide to go to your gym but don?t practice striking at another gym that this will affect my MMA game at your gym? Does your coach focus on the striking aspect of the MMA class?

I called 5 points today and they are on the expensive side. It is 205 for unlimited classes and use of their weight room but they require a 3 month contract and if I needed to freeze my membership, I would still be billed 25 bucks. It is a toss-up between your gym and 5 points. The thing I also like about 5 points is the weight room. I can do everything in 1 location.

If I were to join 5 points, I would attend the following classes: Monday morning Muay Thai, Wednesday morning Muay Thai, Friday afternoon Muay Thai and Judo/BJJ classes, Saturday morning Judo/BJJ and Muay Thai classes, and Sunday afternoon Muay Thai and Judo/BJJ classes. Plus, I could use the weight room area for lifting but I also think my school has a squat rack and sufficient weight for me to use.

This might be a difficult question but which school do you think would help me more to defend myself in a street situation?

LOL @ krav maga. That story you told me is hilarious bro. I?ll take your story and viewpoint on it and will forget about it.

Yea man, it is a shame that we live in the pussified state of NY. We can?t even carry weapons for defense purposes but this still doesn?t stop the dirtbags from carrying them on their person.

Best advice I can give you is to take a class. Steve gives the first one free, I’m sure most places do.

I asked a few months ago if there was going to be an added striking coach, Steve said not at this time.

As for cross training, not at all. Lots of guys cross train, myself included.

Any legit school or system will allow you to defend yourself in a street fight. In the combat sambo class self defense and law enforcement tactics are the emphasized. We use knifes, sticks, guns, foam bricks, and any thing else he can think to throw at us.

NY always sucked, why do you think people got on covered wagons to got west at 1 mile an hour.

Haven’t lifted in about a month. Had a MMA fight in AC last week, and I was doing double training sessions, morning and night, had no energy to get a bj from Kate Upton let alone to lift. I got cauliflower in both ears, had no less than 3 black eyes, but I won my fight by 1st round tko.
