i am glad there are other sport haters here. i work with this mega nerd, he has a wow account and is a star trek expert and has a linux os, and i just found out he loves football too. so that was surprising… at first.

i just cant believe that so many people lose their shit watching strangers play a game. and those movies like rudy, its a game people! football is a great game i agree, but im not going to watch it. maybe i’ll glance at it in the gym.

another thing, the way these sport fans talk about the players is… i dont know how to describe it. rude, solipsistic, simplistic. they make these players out to be pokemon. they are talking about people as having strictly defined attributes like this guy has +5 speed but he only has +2 defense. i dont listen to these guys so i cant give a good example but they act like the players can only do certain things and are bad at other things, and they cant change and they arent training hard every day to be a well rounded athlete. these sport fans are just nerds that want to play a dungeons and dragons game using people who could kick their ass
x2. I also find the way society cares about sports funny. there are people at my college library who scream “fuck yeah good shot” and “hell yeah!” while watching sports videos on the library computers. If they yelled like that for any other show people would not tolerate them. Also I think its funny when fat unathletic people define their identity by their favorite professional sports team. isn’t sports actually just a form of entertainment?
honest question: as a non-sports fan, how do you maintain your friendships with other dudes? what’s the subject matter of your conversations with them? (genuinely curious here)
Politics, music, movies, girls, series, training, good food, good drinks, religion, work, school, life in general, shit that annoys you etc.
Mine is mostly movies, you spend your time on something so intensely, and let it be known publicly, eventually your friends tend to align more with those interests. You go to the gym you get gym buddies, you talk about films and you get film fans, you’re a musician and you talk to musicians. There are exceptions of course, but at least for me, my closer friends tend to be cinema-oriented, so the conversations revolve around that and we’re all so invested that they never wane.

Politics and religion are the big ones though I guess, almost everyone has an opinion on at least one if not both, and 99% of people are willing to shout that opinion in your face given the green light.
Exactly. I can talk about movies, TV shows, Training, and diet until my face falls off.

I dont understand, we are judging a players attributes according to the game that they play, yes it is simplistic but its justified, I am concerned on what the player could do on the field of play, not if he is really good at origami.

This issue I have with this comment and comments like this is, just because I have passion for team sports, does not mean its all encompassing. You dont know about sports which you admit, but you hate it, actually it sounds pretty ignorant. Dont understand it, fine, dont like it, fine as well. However hating what you dont understand or want to understand is just stupid. Live and let live.

I played Dungeons and Dragons too, I loved it, another great way to use your imagination and have fun, we received tons of shit for it too, but I guarantee if you saw who I was playing with you would be surprised.

<---------------- Sports loving D&D playing nerd…COME AT ME BROS!

I love playing sports, especially the ones I suck at, but only watch the really big games. World/European cup, Champions League final, olympic finals or so. Partly because Sweden is only decent at hockey, and of course send all the good players to the NHL so we only get to see them if they don’t make the playoffs. We have one good football (“soccer”) player and he switches teams faster than the networks can buy broadcasting rights.

I’d probably watch the shit out of Bundesliga, but can’t justify getting cable just for that.

My kids took soccer when they were little and neither of them liked it, thank god. My youngest was more inclined to beat people up on the field… on his own team, so I yanked him from that.

I will go out on a limb here, but maybe teamsports are not his cup of tea?
He actually became an excellent lacrosse and baseball player. Being agressive he could lay people out with a legal body check in lacrosse, but playing the catcher position in baseball was his thing.

Rob

i agree 100% with this thread. some sports themselves are not terrible to watch but the amount of time dedicated to watching them is ridiculous.

Yeah that makes sense, silly question in retrospect.

Mate if the only thing you can converse about with your friends is sports theres either something seriously wrong with you, or something seriously wrong with your friends.

Now I’m curious - do you and your friends talk about anything besides sports?
To be honest, some of my “healthiest” friendships’ conversations revolve around sportstalk & women, pretty much 99% of the time.

By comparison, other friendships are more tedious to maintain.

More than anything, sports provides an easy way to keep contact “up-to-date” while also keeping personal nonsense/drama completely out of the equation.

LOL at the “what do you talk about” question. If the only thing you’ve got in common with your friends is sports then maybe they aren’t that good of friends. In social situations I know enough about the games to be able to talk my way through. But nobody is ever totally shocked that I don’t watch sports.

I do enjoy playing sports though so I’m not anti-athletics.

You sound kinda defensive, james.

^ this, I follow sports, i really enjoy playing sports, and the best way to start a conversation with someone is usually about sports. Obviously you’re not going to ask some girl about the latest football news, but being able to have a conversation with a total stranger about something is cool.

If you’re the type of person who does not watch tv i understand, however i personally really enjoy ending the day starring at the television for a bit. It’s a nice way to relax, and sports is really the only decent thing on TV.

I’ve found an easy way to shut up people who hate on sports and that is to ask them if they ever played anything? and then ask if they got beat up by people who used to play sports? Results vary but it’s interesting to see the correlations… Found this out going to theater club parties at college, interesting group of people you meet there

Men who don’t like sports are what’s known as “women”.
I thought that was men who watch baseball.
Well, then color me purple and call me Suzie!

I love watching and playing sports, I am one of those guys who will yell at my television and talk with my friends about it for hours on end. Its certainly not the only thing we talk about , yes we talk about life, serious issues and broads. What you non-sport watching people fail to realize that sports is quite frankly an escape.

If you want to dissect why people such as myself are so into sports of course you are going to find fault with it, but that goes for anything. I have friends who know jack shit about sports, but they love cars and I could care less. To each his own, but if your looking for a justification on why so many men go nuts for sports alot has to do with the escape, the history and devotion and how your family was brought up. Sports was huge in my household and happy it was.

the longest running threads on this site are devoted to team sports, which says something about bringing total strangers together, shit we even started fantasy football leagues through this site. Sports can be a great way to ignite conversation and forge a friendship that is deeper than just sports, it could be a stepping stone to great relationships.
I couldn’t agree more.

And in my own personal, limited experience, I’ve found in life that people who enjoy sports, particularly those who played them at SOME level as a child/adolescent, do much better in life and are far more well-rounded people than those who don’t like sports. That goes double for people who abhor sports instead of being simply indifferent about them.

I used to play Jr.A hockey as a goalie when I was younger. To this day (age 25) I still don’t get why people care about sports unless they actually play. Frankly, I can’t stand team sports as I despise having to rely on other people. People suck, I’d rather do shit on my own. So I lift heavy stuff at the gym instead, much more satisfying.

What a magnificent turn of events…

All the sudden this thread stopped being shitty.

Meh, if Austria’s football team was as powerful and as awesome as Germany’s, I’m sure you wouldn’t say such thing.
