I’m 20 and in college and I work part time during school and full time in summer/breaks at a drug store chain doing stock. I fucking hate my job. It’s pure misery and I want out.
I’m thinking about applying at a local gym a few towns over from me. My thinking is I love iron so working around it HAS to be better than putting bottles of Tide and Cheer on a shelf 8 hours a day.

Ever seen some of the jobs of the show “Dirty Jobs”? Those jobs are “pure misery”. Stocking shelves ain’t. I’ve dug ditches for $2/hour, and that sucked, but it wasn’t “misery”. Quit whining.
By the way, I’ve worked in a gym and it’s better than digging ditches.
It’s not as cool as you think it would be. Sure, being in the gym when you’re training is fun, you feel at home, and see your buddies all busting their asses too. You feel like you belong, and everyone supports everyone else. BUT… working there, and dealing with the people who don’t “get it”, or just waste your time,… well, it will suck the wind right out of your sails.

Listen tough guy, I didn’t ask you to compare my job to what you saw on a tv show. Who the fuck are you to tell me how good or bad I should think my job should be. If I want to look for a new job because I don’t like my current one, I have the fucking right to. I also have the right to ask about it on the internet for the fun of it.
Oh and you used to walk 15 miles up hill both ways to dig those ditches too? Didn’t ya? Save your “i had it so much worse” bullshit for another thread. Quit whining my ass.

Stocking shelves = misery
I guess the misery meter needs a good calibrating.
i just have to say, that I would much rather work a majority of the jobs that I have seen on Dirty Jobs, than to work in retail ever again, much less shelf stocking.
The jobs maybe disgusting, dirty, and hard labor, but a lot of them are on the cutting edge of technology, offer you new experiences everyday, and some look freaking fun. anyone else here agree?
for me, pure misery is repetitive tasks without an end in site. to the ditch guy, i bet as much as you hated the job, finishing a ditch had to give you a sense of accomplishment. continually restocking shelves that you know won’t stay like you put them for more than 10 minutes can be downright depressing at times.
It all comes down to your ability to handle mind numbing tasks. As for working at the gym, it depends exactly what you will be doing. I sure as hell wouldn’t want to be cleaning up the toilets in there anytime soon.
Having said all that, I also worked a similar job to you at your age, (I worked in a warehouse through college for 5 years) and hated every moment of it. So if I were you I would give the gym thing a go.

Well either you are 80 years old or you were in prison because I don’t know anyone who would do manual labor for $2 an hour in any halfway modern times. That being said, I have never worked at a gym but if I had to venture a guess I’d say it depends on the gym. Working at local gym probably would be fun but working at some big corporate chain gym would probably suck just as badly as stocking shelves.

My first job was stocking shelves in 1972 for $1.60 an hour
working at a gym can definitely kill your passion for working out ( I know it did mine ). You also have to find the time that works best for you to exercise, because I know once I’m done at the gym I’m not sticking around to workout. I have to do it during the middle of my day.

How far back does your knowledge of wage history go? Current federal minimum wage is $5.85/hour. In 1968, it was $1.60 hour. In the mid-70’s (the time period I’m referencing) the wage was something between the two. So in the 40 years from 1968 to 2008, the federal minimum wage climbed from $1.60 to $5.85. That’s not much difference in half-way modern times.
So Playboy, when did your employment history begin? Or hasn’t it?
