I don’t drive the bar down into my back, I’ve been known to only have my finger tips on the bar with heavy squats…doesn’t seem to bother me or effect my squat in any way.
It’s all in chest position for me…chest forward and up, elbows down and pulled together… My hands have nothing to do with being able to achieve any of those positions
Closed grip kills my wrists. Thumbless is pain-free and I’m working on getting comfortable with this style.

IPF (my fed) allows thumbless on squat.
My point isn’t about thumbless grip. I’ve used that before with some success before it caused pain in my hands.
My point about pulling the bar down on your back refers to the fact that his hands are open and his wrists are cocked. How can you pull the bar down with open hands like that? It looks inactive like they are just a handy place to rest the bar rather than an active part of the squat.

Fair point. The pictured grip is retarded.
the guy the OP posted has his palms facing towards the ceiling which doesn’t seem to be as stable as having palms facing infront of you.
I started out with my grip like his, except my fingers where gripping the bar.
Then I started keeping my wrists straight instead of bent.
Now I’ve been using a complete closed grip.
I can grip tighter with a closed grip and keep my traps tighter. Also with my thumb on the…side of the bar I sometimes get a slight soreness in the palm of my right hand.
I’m really not sure which grip is the best though. Or if there is even a best… I’ll probably try the traditional closed for a while though…
