I was doing research and found that open carry of a pistol is legal in Michigan. I have a misdemeanor conviction that bans me from CCW in MI for 8 years, unless if I move to another state. However, I can open carry if I want, and legally. However a lot of cops arent aware of this law and no doubt I will get hassled. I know alot of cops will be uncomfortable but the law is the law. I will contact an attorney and get professional legal advice before I do open carry.
The Black Panthers tried this same thing in the 60’s with shotguns on the streets of Oakland. Didn’t work out too well for them.
You can converse with fellow OC’ers here and can ask questions of Michiganers specifically.
I just show ppl my ‘I know JPCleary’ card and i’m good to go.
friggin CCW’ing a damn m240 up in this beeotch
I was under the impression that open carry was considered bad because all it will do is make a potential assailant basically say “Ok, so if I want his wallet I’ll just have to ACTUALLY kill him instead of just threaten it”.

…this usually does the trick. It’s also useful for the random MMF, as well.

One could make this argument.
Another could make the argument that OC is a deterrent as the bad guys generally look for the easiest of targets…not the folks carrying guns.

lol. so dumb.
or you’d think “wow, the chance of me catching a pair of .45’s in my chest really isn’t worth the hassle of going for the dude’s wallet”
not that i open carry, but if you saw my macaroni ass walking around with a glock 30 on my hip, are you really going to try and take my wallet?

…no doubt.
OC is actually legal in all but 7 states…

I wouldn’t, but then again I’m not a criminal so this proves nothing.
Check local ordinances too. OC is legal where in the city where I am, but through my work as an intern at a local PD I can tell you that the officers will stop and possibly cite you for creating a disturbance due to the panic that will most likely be caused from doing so. Also you WOULD get a citation for carrying a pistol within city limits as it’s against local ordinance.
Remember that just because state says it’s ok doesn’t mean that it is 100% legal.

Here is an example of that in Washington state…

No but it would an excuse to play grab ass.
HOHOHOHHO.
UH-OH! Don’t shoot me Michigan! I’m unarmed!
I understand the argument about individual rights concerning firearms, but I personally don’t like the idea that any poor schlub who can buy a handgun can strap it on his hip and go to the mall. A CCW holder is required to show competency with a handgun(if not proficiency), and is expected to know the laws governing use of force, in fact he signs a legal document stating that he will do so.
And as dumb as it is, there will always be people who freak out because dude has a cannon on his hip. There was a guy in VA couple years ago who wore his big ass revolver into Starbucks, and someone called 911 on him. The responding officer cited him and confiscated the revolver, before being informed by the DA that it is perfectly legal to carry in VA. All charges were dropped and the man got his stuff back.

Let us know what he says. I tend to believe the people that have already posted who have said that although its technically legal, there would be too many caveats, and that you would also have to be very aware of crossing certain borders between cities.

This. Police can and will stop and question you wherever you go, and for good reason, I might add. Just because it’s legal doesn’t make it a good idea.

Great point. Maybe my mom should be a cop. She’s good at telling people when they do stupid things, even when they’re legal.

OP, post what you find. Fellow Detroiter here, if you can open carry that’s awesome.
I’m not really saying don’t do it, I’m just saying that if you do OC, make sure you know the local ordinances and get ready to be stopped and/or hassled pretty much everywhere you go. Also, be prepared to possibly have your gun temporarily confiscated such as what happened in WA like someone posted above.
