'Only Whites Can Be Racist'

Ok, I think you are confusing racism with the ability of a power group to subjugate minorities. Minorities can certainly be racist. And are often more racist than whites. That’s why Crash is such a great movie. It highlights the pervasive nature of racism and shows how every racial and ethnic group has its biases.

But it’s whites in this society that have traditionally been the power group and have exercised power to continue our own advancement and foreclose educational and employment opportunities to minorities. Thankfully, this has largely changed as a result of both discrimination laws and changing cultural mores.

Now, actually, we face a troublesome dichotomy. Minorities still struggle in society. But at the same time, we may have swung too far in the other direction in some instances. Take affirmative action for example. Too often unqualified minority candidates are accepted to schools. And when they get there, they don’t do well. That’s not good for whies. That’s not good for minorities. That’s not good for anyone.

I don’t think anyone is denying that this has happened in the past, and may still be happening in some corners. What’s pisses me off is the “original sin” nature of the accusations of racism these days. All whites are racist, no matter what they do. Rather than admit that things have improved remarkably in the last few generations, some apparently refuse to give up their victimhood.

I was raised in a liberal household I have never judged anyone based on the color of their skin, and yet I’ve had plenty of people wave the race card in my face. I was raised on “equality” and yet now it seems that equality isn’t enough and some people expect special privaledges. If I see a black guy dating a white girl, I wouldn’t see anything wrong with this. But as a white guy who has dated black girls, I have come to expect that black guys will talk trash to me whenever we go out. Apparently, they can date my women, but I can’t date theirs. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t really give a shit, but I see how people are, and I refuse to accept that I have to carry some special burden because of the color of my skin.
