On TRT 5yrs, Cholesterol Recently Spiked

My cholesterol was perfect for my entire life up until now, but I’ve had two straight tests over 220 (total) and 130 (LDL, the bad one). Is there any way this is related to taking exogenous testosterone? I don’t take any other drugs. Why would it suddenly spike if I’ve been doing fine for five years? Don’t really have family history of this. I work out everyday and eat a healthy diet, take 10 caps of fish oil, 500mg Niacin, eat lots of avacados, etc.

My T and E2 are consistently high normal and low normal.

Doc says I need to eat more vegies but I think I might need Statins

statins are poison. you’re just setting yourself up for more issues with them.

Statins might not be the best option but I figure I have to do something. the risk of developing heart disease or clogged arteries seems a lot worse than any of the other side effects of cholesterol meds. I think I can up the niacin and fish oil, eat more veggies. But these usually aren’t enough

I take Crestor, you just have to find one that “works” with your system. I tried several before getting Crestor, it was the only one that didn’t make me feel like death. Just supplement CoQ10 with it and you’ll be fine. Some folks just have high cholesterol - it runs in my family. Without meds, I’m over 300 total with a clean diet. My mom is the same way.

Thanks Catfish. I think I might have jumped the gun about meds, but it is good to know the Crestor is working. I looked further into my lipid profile. My HDL is very high and my triglycerides are low, which is good. I also found out there are two types of LDL (A and B), and I might do further testing to see if my LDL is comprised of the worse LDL (B), or A which is lower risk for heart disease,

there are 2 kinds of niacin.

the non-flushing was shown to be toxic to kidneys and not effective at lowering cholesterol.

the flushing was safe and effective at lowering cholesterol as well as improving vascular elasticity.

Guess which one is more common?
Guess which one is in the prescribed pharmoco Niacin?
Guess which one doctors recommend most?

Answer:
the non flushing.

Thanks, yeah, my Niacin is no flush!

I thought the only difference was the release rate? I wondered about it so I dcsided to test it for myself so I chewed a non-flushing. 15 minutes later I got the Sun Burn Face. Could you explain the difference? Maybe what I had has a little of both.

From what I’ve gathered, flushing niacin (nicotinic acid) has been studied much more than the non-flushing, and has been shown to reduce cholesterol through clinical trials. Non-flushing niacin has been studied less. It consists of niacin molecules connected together by the chemical inositol. Supposedly, this chemical is broken down into nicotinic acid and enters the bloodstream. Since this process takes longer time to occur, it is thought that this is the cause for its diminished side effects. However, if a high amount of non-flushing niacin is ingested, you may still feel the side effects of niacin.

FWIW, I took a large dose of the flushing today and I was red in a minute all over my body.

And definitely possible they combine the two types into one product. When I was at Vitamin Shoppe today, I found this stuff called Focus Factor that had both kinds in it.

I’m gonna give Niacin 500mg a try for a couple weeks, then bump to 1000mg, and retest my cholesterol in a few months.

The study that showed the non flushing was toxic to the kidney’s was in MD (Muscular Development) a couple years back. It was a real medical studies with references, proper design, and all…

There was supposition that the flushing action is part of the mechanism that increases the suppleness of the arteries/veins.

I accommodated to 500 mg pretty fast, a little longer for 1g. Always wondered if that means some of the benefits will be blunted. If I miss for a few days then I get flush again.
