I’ve lifted globo-gym style for years but within the last year started taking the big lifts more seriously and more recently started crossfit. We use weatside for our strength portion and at 37 I’m stronger than I’ve ever been (2xbw squat and dead, 1.5xbw bench, 1xbw press) and am better conditioned than ever. But I’ve been hesitant to embrace the olympic focus (because of lacking experience and success)… For health, strength and body comp, am I better off doing my main lifting with olys, or stick w a powerlifting focus? Thx!
Health = you do ANYTHING heavy and for long enough you will fall to bits regardless of powerlifting/ weightlifting. It’s up to you how heavy you go and how often. You ask anyone who has competed at a reasonably good standard for 7-10yrs+ and see how many injuries they have had. I count myself lucky with only 1 big injury and 3-4 smaller injuries in 14yrs. Injuries were not done lifting but random sh!t
Strength = you will get strong doing OLifts
Body comp = you should know this is down to diet diet diet
OLifts will lack these areas for muscular development
chest
biceps
forearms
You don’t have to do one or the other either. Why not do both? Do one for say 3-4-6months then do the PL for that period. You may find due to your lack of coaching you hate the OLifts. Or you may find you love them.
It’s a learning curve but it’s very rewarding IMO.
