Oly Shoe Question

Well I would certainly never describe myself as much of a technician when it comes to doing the lifts! I am going to start gearing up my O-Lifting next year after a PL meet in Feb. and might have to take you up on the technique critique (like that rhyme?) if you have the time. I appreciate the input from everyone, I suppose I will have to ditch my troglodyte ways and actually put some shoes on from time to time.

Sauce on this 300# clean and jerk? I’m going to have to call it.

If you can give me a month or so I’ll get you one and in my bare feet no less. I haven’t done the quick lifts with any intent for a while now, but I’ll build back up to it and video it. I was under the impression that 300#'s wasn’t particularly impressive at a 200+ body weight, did I miss the memo somewhere?

That was awesome. That was one a very few times that I have witnessed someone listen and accept another point of view as superior given logical and sound information. Dare I say there are grown-ups on this site??

That being said, I have both vibrams and oly shoes (1 1/4 inch heel) and the oly shoes without a doubt help my squats. More power and more comfortable in the hole after the transition phase. Then I deadlift conventional barefoot.

It depends on how much 200+ you are. 205 its pretty good, but if you weight 250 its pretty bad.

Granted its not national or olympic level, but for an amateur lifter I would think its above average by a mid-sized margin.

It has been about a year since I was seriously hitting my O-Lifts, but if I recall correctly I was about 215# at the time. I was front squatting 405 consistently and “easily” at that time as well. The best clean and jerk at that time I believe was 305, but it may have been 315. I definitely cleaned 315, but can’t remember if I got it overhead or not. This is why it pays to write things down!

I lost a ton of weight and strength getting ready for a bodybuilding show and I am really trying to get back to my former strength levels and I am getting closer. Going to have to get back into my Olympic lifting too when I find some more time. I have two jobs and a wife and child at home so the old days of 2 and 3 a day training sessions are gone sadly. I’ll get a video up as quick as I can.

I can’t help but associate the Vibram shoes with every cross-fit guy that comes in the gym.

I agree and it sort of pisses me off. I have had a pair of those shoes since they first came out (and were wildly hated on), before the whole cross fit crowd took them up as part of their strange cult, and to see them get hijacked by all those arrogant, know-it-all, yet somehow not very accomplished in anything crossfitters drives me crazy. Oh well. At least now I can wear them on occasion without people shitting their pants and having a little meltdown over them. They’re called toes people, you all have them (hopefully).
